- Ex Lemus Collection, as noted on the insert. This is a wonderful near-GEM example of this scarce half cent pattern. Struck from the regular Proof dies, but in a copper-nickel composition with a plain edge, this pattern is part of the series of experiments to lower the cost of production of the half cent and large cent that began in 1850. Considered to be a Rarity-5 overall, there are two possible alloys which are indistinguishable from each other, and only noted by elemental analysis (either 88/12 copper and nickel or 90/10 copper and nickel). Both sides possess a wonderful reddish-gold patina over watery mirrored fields. The devices are crisply rendered overall with just a hint of weakness at the dentils and the highest points of the wreath. The surfaces have nothing more than a hidden tiny fleck or two and just one or two light lines from a full GEM designation. Ex Bowers & Ruddy's sale of the Montgomery Collection, February 1976, lot 1672; The Lemus Collection, Queller Family Collection, Part II; Heritage's sale of the Lemus Collection, January 2009, lot 1548, where it realized $4,600. PCGS 16, NGC 5, CAC 8. The Eliasberg-Partrick NGC PF64 CAC was the most recent NGC/CAC to sell, realizing $3,120 two years ago; more recently the Bass coin, a non-CAC PCGS coin sold for $4,200 in January 2023. The Collectors Universe Price Guide value is $4,750 and the CAC CPG value is $5,750. Only five are graded finer at NGC. This is a wonderful half cent pattern that is often included along side an advanced set of regular issue Proof half cents. Good luck. Cert. Number 3124037003 PCGS # 11777
