- 1850 Pattern Cent. Judd-119 Original, Pollock-134. Rarity-6-. Proof-63 (PCGS). 1838 Pattern Half Dollar. Judd-73, Pollock-77. Rarity-5. Proof-64 (NGC). Annular or ring-form pattern with the obverse displaying the denomination CENT above and the date 1850 below the central perforation. There are rosettes on each side of the perforation. On the reverse, the legend USA is above and the inscription ONE TENTH SILVER is below the central perforation. Struck in billon (10% silver, 90% copper) with a plain edge.<br /> Patterns of this type were struck in response to an 1849 proposal by Congressman Sam F. Vinton of the House Ways and Means Committee to reduce the size of the cent. The present example is an original striking of 1850 with deep, even, charcoal-copper patina to both sides. Reverse die cracks (as made) are evident, nonetheless, but they are not as advanced as those seen on the restrikes of the Judd-120 type without the central perforation.
