- 1878 Trade Dollar. Proof-65 (PCGS). CAC.
This lovely original Gem displays blended lilac-gray and olive-gold patina, with iridescent champagne-apricot and powder blue undertones. The preservation is exceptional for both the type and issue, and some semblance of a cameo finish adds to the appeal of this exciting specimen, the start of the Proof-only series.
Secretary of the Treasury John Sherman's order of February 22, 1878, halting trade dollar production signaled the end to circulation strike coinage for this denomination. The Carson City Mint had already struck some 97,000 coins earlier in the year, and the San Francisco Mint would go on to produce 4,162,000 examples in fulfillment of pending orders. For the Philadelphia Mint, however, the year 1878 saw the striking of only 900 Proofs. Survivors have long been in demand among advanced collectors for specimen type or date purposes, and this lovely Gem is finer than the typically offered example.
