One of the great rarities of 19th century American "minor" Proof coins, the 1867 Rays nickel in Proof has always captivated collectors. The presently offered example is tied for second FINEST graded at PCGS in the Cameo designation. What a delight to behold! Brilliant, flashy, reflective mirrors are strong and glitter when viewed in a light. The faintest blush of lilac, rose, and clear gold come to life as the brilliant surfaces catch the light. Sharp in strike and even using a strong glass we are unable to locate any lines or marks of significance. The Proof 1867 with Rays nickel is one of the RAREST and most enigmatic issues in the entire nickel series. The mint changed the design of the Shield nickel reverse part way through 1867. Difficulties in striking caused the With Rays reverse die to break, leaving many small die cracks. The mint sought to fix this issue by removing the rays from the design. A small, but unknown mintage in Proof was produced. Some estimates are as low as 25; PCGS CoinFacts suggests 60. The current combined population of PCGS and NGC-graded coins in all designations comes to 89 examples (which likely includes duplication). Regardless of actual mintage, the number of known examples is very small, the smallest in the entire Shield nickel series. It is very interesting to note that researchers have identified four different die parings and different die states that suggest that the miniscule mintage was produced at four different times. This is a date that compares in rarity to the 1864-L cent in Proof and is just as important to collectors of Shield nickels as the 64-L is to Indian cent collectors. PCGS 9, NGC 6, CAC 2. This is not the streaky toned example that sold in the 2023 FUN auction, the only other CAC PR65 CAM example. PCGS has graded just 2 finer and CAC just one.
