1849 Moffat & Co. $10 Gold. K-5. Rarity-6+. TEN D. Fine-12 (PCGS). This piece displays a typical quality of strike for the type, the obverse very softly struck in the center with a prominent die bulge (as made) in the date area. The reverse is well worn, also, but it exhibits enough detail to perhaps suggest a VF grade. Otherwise deep-orange color blends with more vivid copper-rose highlights at the borders. Scattered small and moderate size abrasions are not out of place in a heavily circulated example of this elusive California Gold Rush era type. Scarcer in an absolute sense than the 1849 Moffat & Co. ten of the TEN DOL. design type.
