- A KEY issue in the series. While the mintage was nearly 1.5 million, these went into circulation where they would remain for years, virtually unnoticed by contemporary collectors (who opted for Proof examples in many cases). Today, the 1885 is in demand from collectors in all grades, Mint State coins are particularly sought. The CHOICE example offered here has a wonderful look, with a lively luster under a delicate blush of iridescent toning. Some minute striking weakness is seen but overall the definition is crisp and bold, especially in the centers. A few old scattered ticks account for the grade and the eye appeal is very pleasing. PCGS 79, NGC 49. The most recent example sold over three years ago. Today the PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $4,500. Very scarce any finer.
