1850-C Liberty Half Eagle. Winter Variety 2 (15-F). MS-63 (PCGS). The 1850-C is one of the higher-mintage Charlotte Mint Half Eagles with 63,591 pieces produced. Even so, strictly graded Mint State survivors are few and far between in numismatic circles. Qualifying as Condition Census, this important example traces its pedigree to both the Gaston DiBello and Harry W. Bass, Jr. collections, the latter of which actually included three different Mint State examples of this issue! Both sides of the coin exhibit lovely mint frost and rich green-gold color. The patina brightens under direct light, at which angles we also see very modest hints of brilliance here and there in the fields. Bold-to-sharp in strike, and otherwise quite smooth, a few wispy abrasions before Liberty's portrait and behind the eagle's head are the only pedigree markers of note.
