1878-S Seated Liberty Quarter. Briggs 1-A, the only known dies. MS-64 (PCGS). CAC. This is a very scarce-to-rare issue in Mint State, a fact that a limited mintage of 140,000 pieces does not fully convey. The real reason why Larry Briggs (1991) assigns this issue a Rarity-6+ rating in Unc is the wholesale destruction of undistributed pieces in the San Francisco Mint. The bullion retrieved through this melting was almost certainly used to inaugurate Morgan Silver Dollar production in the West Coast branch mint.<br />     High in the Condition Census, this is a lovely near-Gem with full mint bloom in a satin-to-semi-prooflike sheen. Fully struck from the dies, and expertly preserved thereafter, this coin comes highly recommended for inclusion in the finest Seated Quarter set. Presenting as brilliant at most angles, we do note the lightest pinkish-silver iridescence to the surfaces.
