The mintage of 508,000 was the lowest emission from any of the three mints in the first year of issue. With collecting by mintmark still in its relative infancy, most 1916-S halves went into circulation, thus of the three 1916 issues, the 16-S is the RAREST in the highest echelons of the grading scale. The present PQ GEM, ranks as tied for third highest certified at PCGS, with just two coins graded finer.
A strong pearly-silver iridescent toning is enlivened by a bold, brilliant satiny sheen on both sides. There are traces of the most delicate multicolored toning that comes out as you rotate the surfaces in a light; hints of olive, pale lilac, tangerine, rose, and deep green are limited to the peripheries, while a dusting of champagne ties it all together. Sharply struck up devices and very minimally abraded (you need a strong glass to locate the minor ticks well hidden in the design elements). The overall technical quality and high end are exceptional in every way. This ultra high end specimen is worthy of the FINEST of sets!
Ex Heritage, September 2004, lot 6751; Eric Lane Collection, Heritage, August 2015, lot 4113; Dr. Steven L. Duckor Collection, January 2018, lot 4868; our consignor.
PCGS 20, NGC 18, CAC 5. The most recent example sold for $60,000 in October 2020. The current PCGS Price Guide value is $50,000 and the CAC CPG value is listed at $48,000. We expect that this marvelous borderline SUPERB GEM will see very strong bidding when it crosses the block. Note: just two are finer at PCGS, the MS67 fines have not sold in auction since 2004! If you are working on a TOP TIER set of PCGS/CAC Walkers, who knows when another opportunity like this will occur! Good luck.
