- Lovely 1794 Sheldon-26 Cent
1794 Liberty Cap Cent. S-26. Rarity-2. Head of 1794. AU-58 (PCGS). CAC.
An exceptional example of this popular type variety in the Liberty Cap cent series, this premium quality example borders on Mint State. Abundant faded mint color remains, the deep rose-red mingling nicely with original and attractive golden-brown patina. There is light steel-gray on the high points. Satiny surfaces are hard, tight and exceptionally smooth with not even a single detracting or otherwise mentionable mark. There is a tiny, shallow planchet pit in the upper obverse field below the letter B in LIBERTY that will serve as a useful provenance marker. Nicely centered within fully denticulated borders with impressively sharp detail throughout the design. Breen Die State VII, the reverse with clash marks and sharp radial cracks through the letters E and the first S in STATES.
Sheldon-26 represents the third marriage of this fine style obverse. The first appears to be the variety known as 1794 NC-8, of which just three specimens are known. Following 1794 NC-8, this obverse was severely clashed during its Sheldon-25 marriage, which necessitated significant repair before the Sheldon-26 marriage. While the most significant clashes were seen near the cap, the repairs removed not only the clashes, but also separated several lower locks from the bulk of Liberty's hair. The moniker "Severed Hair" has been attached to this variety for over a century, but it could just as easily be called the Floating Cap, as the section of the pole behind Liberty's head has likewise been polished away.
Cataloged with an EAC grade of EF-45 in Heritage's recent offering, this coin is certainly far superior to that level based on market grading. It rivals many Mint State Liberty Cap cents in PCGS and NGC holders that we have handled over the years, and would make an impressive addition to either a high quality type set or advanced early copper cabinet.
Provenance: From Heritage's FUN Signature Auction of January 2021, lot 3315. Possibly earlier ex Charles M. Williams.
