- This is a SUPERB GEM from a SUPERB collection. What a great looking, totally original beauty! Thick, satiny mint frost has a rich brilliance on both sides. The devices are sharply struck up with and stand out against the essentially pristine fields. The obverse shows a tinge of the most subtle clear gold and peach while the reverse shows off a deeper coppery-orange with hints of purple/blue at the rims. The composition of silver coins resulted in wholesale export and melting as the price of silver increased in relation to the price of gold, making the metallic value exceed the face value. An act of Congress in 1853 adjusted the silver content lower and the change was noted by Arrows at the date and a spray of rays around the eagle. Prior to the change, 44,200 quarters were struck from a single pair of dies. Between ravages of circulation and wholesale melting of the issue for bullion, this date is RARE so fine! The obverse die shows bold recutting of the 53 in the date. PCGS 8, NGC 3, CAC 3. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $23,500. This coin has been off the market for four years. It realized nearly $20,000 in the Gardner sale. Just a trio are graded higher, and the most recent to sell brought $32,500 in a November 2016 internet auction. This coin has a very similar look and we would not be surprised if it brought close to that in its appearance here. Worthy of an exceptional type or specialized Seated quarter set! Good luck. Cert.
