- 1842-O Liberty Seated Half Dollar. WB-13. Rarity-3. Medium Date, Medium Letters (a.k.a. Reverse of 1842). Misplaced Date. MS-61 (NGC). Mottled, iridescent toning in champagne-gold, pinkish-rose and cobalt blue is more extensive on the obverse. Lustrous surfaces include appreciable semi-reflectivity in the fields. Beginning in the late 1830s, continuing through 1854, the New Orleans Mint was the only branch facility to strike half dollars. There was no numismatic interest in them at the time, with the result that examples survived in Mint State, as here, by rare chance.
