1785 Vermont Copper. RR-1, Bressett 26-Z, W-2250. Rarity-5+. IMMUNE COLUMBIA. Good-6.
103.3 grains. A classic issue in the Vermont copper series with a Vermont obverse coupled with the reverse from the Immune Columbia series. Deep golden-tan surfaces appear somewhat microgranular under low magnification. Obverse with VER plain, MON soft and mostly off the planchet, AUCT plain, ORI soft and barely seen, several old and toned-over scratches seen, most notable of these the number 112 scratched into the effigy's cheek, reverse boldly off-center to 7 o'clock, COLUMB plain, rim through IA, portion of seat and Columbia's feet off the planchet, all of IMMUNE off the planchet save for the E which is mostly obscured by a natural planchet flaw in that area, Columbia's icon plainly visible though weak in places, a few light toned-over scratches seen under a loupe, no marks of measure assail the viewer's eye. As noted in Tony Carlotto's book: "Although this variety bears the date of 1785, it was probably struck later toward the end of the Vermont-Machin venture." The metrology is all over the board for this variety, with Carlotto listing weights that range from 104.6 to 132.6 grains, with the present piece slightly lighter than the low end of the range. All told, the present coin represents an opportunity for collectors to obtain one of the most famous of all Vermont copper varieties in a wholly acceptable grade and state of preservation.
PCGS# 536.
