- 1873 Liberty Head Quarter Eagle. Close 3. MS-65 (PCGS).
Splendid rose-gold surfaces are smooth, frosty and sharply struck over virtually all design elements. When production of quarter eagles began for 1873, the initial date logotype employed a 3 with the two loops terminated by large balls that were so close to one another near the middle that the digit could easily resemble an 8. The chief coiner raised concerns early in the production cycle and soon thereafter, Chief Engraver William Barber furnished a new logotype with wider spacing between the terminal balls. A total of 178,005 circulation strike quarter eagles were produced in 1873, of which just 55,200 bear the Close 3 date logotype. This is the scarcer of the two varieties for the issue, and it is rare in the finest Mint State grades, as here.
