- A classic in the half dollar series, the 1836 Reeded Edge was the first issue of the denomination struck using a closed collar on the new steam press in the second Philadelphia mint. This was a major technological advance in coinage production in the United States. Prior to 1836, half dollars were struck in a two step process: the planchets were struck using the screw press and run through the Castasing machine, which impressed the edge lettering that spelled out 50 CENTS OR HALF A DOLLAR. The use of the new steam press and closed collar allowed for the use of a new reeded edge that would be impressed on the planchets as the planchet was pressed by the dies. This made the production more efficient and the coins more uniform. Very few examples were struck using this new equipment, the oft cited figure is 1,200 (though PCGS CoinFacts suggests a mintage of 5,000). Regardless, this is an important coin for the early half dollar collector. Beautifully toned on both sides, with a ring of aqua-teal at the rim, melding into an amber-orange-gold in the centers. The design elements are nicely defined by a crisp, exacting strike and there is only a touch of light wear on the surfaces. Inspection with a strong glass reveals some light, long toned over marks which have a minimal overall impact on the outstanding eye appeal. PCGS 1, NGC 1. This is not the NGC coin crossed over. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $6,250, and we would expect this coin to realize around that. Scarce finer, this important type coin will delight anyone looking for an attractively toned example for an "everyman" set. Good luck. Cert. Number 21602441 PCGS # 6175
