- Few people know this, but in the early 20th Century, the U.S. engaged in an imperial expansion. During the War with Spain, the U.S. not only captured Cuba and Puerto Rico, but also took over the Philippines. The U.S. began striking coins for circulation in the newly obtained territory in 1903. In 1904, only 10,000 were struck, making this a very scarce issue. Most of these have circulated and Mint State coins are quite scarce, and GEMS rare. Listed in the Red Book, this coin is often collected along side other territorial-related world coins, like those struck in 1883 for the Kingdom of Hawaii and the 1895 Spanish struck coins of Puerto Rico. Bold underlying luster accents the pewter blue, pale gold, russet-tan, and soft olive tones. Sharply struck devices show a walking figure of Liberty striking a hammer on an anvil and a smoking volcano in the background. The reverse shows an eagle surmounted on the union shield. This GEM's eye appeal is exceptional. PCGS 17, NGC 9. The most recent example sold for $4,320 in February 2019 and prior to that, one sold in January 2016 for $3,995. This is a very interesting and important coin that will delight advanced U.S. collectors or world crown collectors alike. Cert. Number 36207114 PCGS # 90383
