- 1798 Draped Bust Silver Dollar. Heraldic Eagle. BB-102, B-20. Rarity-5. Pointed 9, Wide Date. Fine-15 (NGC). Silver gray surfaces support blushes of warmer rose-apricot patina around the peripheries. Writing in the 2013 book The Encyclopedia of United States Silver Dollars: 1794-1804, Q. David Bowers describes this variety: "BB-102 is in the medium range of scarcity among silver dollars of 1798. Probably somewhere around 75 to 125 are known. The variety is one of only a few with an average grade below the VF level. A review of auction appearances demonstrates that here is a variety for which EF and AU are remarkable grades." The author goes on to list several notable specimens of the variety, all of which grade VF-25 to AU-58, and none of which are Mint State. At the Choice Fine level, the present example represents more realistically obtainable quality for this scarce early dollar variety. BB Die State I. PCGS# 6873. NGC ID: 24X6.
