- This is a wonderful example of this incredibly RARE early Liberty Head quarter eagle. From an original mintage of a mere 2,823, PCGS CoinFacts estimates 50-60 are known today in all grades. The late David Akers wrote "In grades above EF...it is extremely rare..." Light, honest wear is seen on both sides of this AU example. A strong glass reveals some light friction in the fields and devices on both sides, but there are no serious marks of any kind to be found anywhere. Delicate olive and rose toning adds to the visual allure of this wonderful, rare, and very challenging coin! PCGS 3, NGC 5. This coin brought $7,250 in October 2022. The current Collectors Universe value is $10,000. Just seven are finer at NGC, and this coin is worthy of careful consideration from anyone working on a set of these classic gold issues. Good luck.
