- Intensely and vibrantly lustrous RED surfaces glow boldly on this Premium GEM Civil War era Indian Head cent. The mint switched to a bronze composition part way through 1864, as the copper-nickel planchets proved too hard to strike properly. The new composition allowed the planchets to be thinner and strike better. The new planchet stock was also of a different color, with brilliant red at time of mintage instead of the golden-tan of the earlier type. The presently offered MS66 RD is of incredible eye appeal. Rich red is accented by delicate iridescent highlights that pop when the highly lustrous surfaces hit the light. Exceptionally well struck. Even under strong magnification, this coin is pleasantly devoid of all the problems normally encountered with this issue such as weak feathers, spots, streaky toning and contact marks. This coin will fit nicely in any great Indian Head cent collection.
PCGS 45, NGC 28. The most recent non-CAC example sold for $4,200 in March 2022 and the current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $4,250. RARE finer, this is a Registry Set contender for sure.
