- 1885 Nickel Three-Cent Piece. MS-61 (NGC). The 1885 three cent nickel is one of those few U.S. coin rarities (at least from the "classic era") where fewer business strikes were made than proofs -- 1,000 of the former compared to 3,790 of the latter. This fact makes the '85 the rarest three cent nickel as a circulation strike, and this is a no-questions circulation strike, with absolutely no trace of any proof impression or surface. Some minor striking softness is noted over the central device on the obverse, the reverse is boldly defined. There are absolutely no marks, spots, or other distractions to note. Each side presents a soft blue-gray color with soft rose-gold accents here and there. Honestly, we are unsure why this one resides in an MS-61 holder as the eye appeal is far above that. PCGS# 3753.
