- "1789" Mott Token. Breen-1020. Thick Planchet. Plain Edge. AU-53 (PCGS). Glossy deep golden-tan surfaces exhibit faint marks and surface roughness (caused by stressed dies and not by circulation) under low magnification. From a late state of the dies, the obverse regulator or clock with a die cud in full bloom at the upper right (viewer's left) corner. On the reverse, the eagle is weak in substance and strike at the center, as is nearly always the case, and the legend has been drawn to the edge and made nearly unreadable in places. All things considered, however, the present piece ably represents the type.
In the late 1980s, Bowers and Merena of Wolfeboro, New Hampshire sold a hoard of obsolete bank notes through the Rare Coin Review, the company's famous magazine. Many of the notes were dated 1839, and numerous notes were stamped on the back with a purple-ink impression of an advertisement for the firm of William and John Mott in New York City (decades later, the writer -- FVV -- still regrets not having purchased one). These notes could very well have been the key to the Mott mystery, as 1789 was their first year in business, at least according to the Mott token's given date, and 1839 would represent a 50th Anniversary for the firm. Oh, to lay our hands on one of the notes today!
