- 1652 Massachusetts Bay Colony Oak Tree Shilling. Noe-1, Salmon 1-A, W-430. Rarity-3. IN at Left. AU-58 (PCGS). CAC. 69.8 grains. An absolutely magnificent type coin with a storied provenance, one of the most attractive examples of the iconic Noe-1 Oak Tree shilling variety. From our 2005 catalog of the Ford Massachusetts Silver collection, where it was described as:

"...far nicer than most seen. Lovely light gray and iridescent blue and gold on the obverse, deeper gray and richer iridescent gold on the reverse. Full tree, roots and some internal trunk structure visible, branch on lower right a little soft but still fully legible. Most letters in the legend on both sides a little soft (as made) particularly on the left and right sides of the reverse where the cutter reduced the size of the planchet to approach the correct weight for the denomination. Just about perfectly centered on both sides and clearly carefully clipped at the Boston Mint to create a piece of pleasing appearance. All letters in the obverse and reverse legends on the flan, those soft and partially off now, a result of the clipping as described. Light striations on the left and right obverse, (also both the result of the clipping). Reverse die perfect, no break through ND."

Your cataloger sees the color spectrum as primarily pale blue and gold, rich and old, a perfect lustrous blend. Nicely centered and boldly struck, with complete legends, a sharp tree, and exceptional visual appeal. Just as Noe-1 is the iconic dies for a Pine Tree, Noe-1 is the iconic dies for an Oak Tree. There are very few finer examples, and we could see sensible collectors disagreeing on which piece is preferable, this coin or the Noe-1 which preceded it in Ford that realized $48,875.
