Since 2002, the Annual PCGS Set Registry Awards have honored top sets and other significant collections of merit. While the past year has been unlike any other in recent memory, we at PCGS are honored to continue this tradition by announcing the top sets and collections of 2020, and it’s during a year when we’ve seen more Registry Sets than ever, with more than 125,000 sets built by more than 20,000 collectors from around the world. As the PCGS Set Registry, which came online in 2001, marks the start of its third decade on the internet, it remains the favorite platform for numismatists of all levels to build their collections and compete with fellow collectors in the shared pursuit of numismatic greatness.
2020 PLATINUM LEVEL SETS
Platinum is awarded to the currently active sets and collections that have won gold awards for five years in a row and continue to be ranked number one within their respective set composites going into their sixth award winning year. Platinum winning sets and collections no longer compete for gold but continue to shine in each of their categories.

2020 GOLD LEVEL SETS
Gold is awarded to honor sets that are the best in their category and have been selected by our judging committee to be recognized for outstanding set building. The completeness and quality of each of these sets deserves recognition. Many of these sets have won in the past and some are new recipients of the gold award. Each of the following sets are truly impressive and worthy of the prestige of the gold award.
TOP CLASSIC SETS 1794-1964
Simpson - Lincoln Cents Off-Metal Strikes, Circulation Strikes (1943-1944)
This is a very impressive set of off-metal Lincoln cent strikes! Only missing the elusive 1943-S Bronze, of which only around five are known to exist. One would be hard-pressed to duplicate this set.
Mitchell Spivack (Wondercoin) - Top 100 Modern Coins
Modern coins have definitely seen an influx of interest in the numismatic community over the past several years. Many individuals are realizing that there are some amazing rarities to be found in "the wild." This set comprises a group of coins that start at readily available to nearly impossible. To say that this set is impressive is an understatement.
High Desert - Gold Type Set (1795-1933)
This is another set from High Desert that has held top ranks for the better part of two decades. The state of preservation with a weighted GPA of over 65 is a testament to the collector's dedication and eye. Absolutely worthy of high praise.
High Desert - Silver Type Set (1792-1964)
A gorgeous set of silver coins, this cabinet has been ranked Current Finest and All-Time Finest and was Best of Registry from 2012 through 2019. It is 100% complete with 68 coins and features a 66.42 rating out of a possible 67.77 For comparison's sake, the similar set held by legendary collector DL Hansen is at 65.85.
High Desert - Copper Type Set, Circulation Strikes (1793-1964)
Only two sets have historically reached 100% with an MS GPA. This set, and the Hansen set. High Desert has Hansen beat by over three points! This may seem a small number, but when we are talking this caliber of coins, it's a mountain!
High Desert - Complete U.S. Type Set, Circulation Strikes (1792-1964)
This collection is the Ferrari of US Type Sets. Where many people will attempt this in mixed grades, (easily attainable coins in MS and rarities in low circ grades), High Desert has put together the best of the best. A collection of this magnitude not only requires a vast financial obligation, but more importantly patience and time.
High Desert - Gold Type Set, Circulation Strikes (1795-1933)
This is another show stopper set from High Desert. With incredible rarities such as the 1796 $2 1/2 No Stars, to Wire and Rolled Edge $10 Indians, this set has it all. Another example of how with the right amount of time, financial means, and jumping on opportunities when they appear, world-class sets can be built and enjoyed!
High Desert - Silver Type Set, Circulation Strikes (1792-1964)
Upon first glance, this set obviously seems impressive. Then when you realize you have a high-end 1792 Half Disme and 1796 Quarter involved, it reaches new heights. This set is definitely a feat to be respected.
D.L. Hansen Collection - Complete U.S. Type Set (1792-1964)
At one point or another, many if not most numismatists dream of putting together a basic US Type Set. Mr. Hansen has taken that to the literal next level. Filling this set with absolute swoon-worthy coins. It isn't often that one has the ability to see some of the best-of-the-best coins individually, let alone several in the same collection. The replication of a set of this ilk would be daunting to say the least!
D.L. Hansen Collection - 20th Century Type Set, With Type Variations No Gold (1900-1999)
This is an impressive set that Mr. Hansen completed, knocking High Desert from a highly respectable 18-year top set streak.
High Desert - 20th Century Gold Type Set, Circulation Strikes (1900-1933)
Another High Desert set that has been at the top of its game for nearly two decades. While the majority of this collection is readily available and attainable for most collectors, (with the exception of the Rolled and Wire Edge $10 Indians), the GPA is nearly unreachable. A gold type set of the highest order indeed!
boiler78 - Dollar Type Set (1794-present)
This set was obviously put together by someone whose focus was not only on grade, but also on originality and eye appeal. This is one of those sets that is a true pleasure to click through the photos and see the coins in a state of preservation and beauty that would be a point of pride for the individual coin designers.
Jim O'Neal - Half Dollar Type Set (1794-present)
One of only two complete sets in this composite, and beating the second set - owned by Hansen - by over two points! For a collector of United States Half Dollars, this set is a crown jewel. No doubt that many years of active collecting was involved in the building of this top set!
High Desert - Large Cent Type Set, Circulation Strikes (1793-1857)
With a weighted GPA of almost 67, this set is mind boggling! Most collectors dream of owning a 1793 Chain Cent in any condition. Finding one in XF is an absolute treat, let alone one in mint state! At this grade level and state of preservation, this set will likely be king for a great while longer!
D.L. Hansen Collection - U.S. Coins Complete Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1792-present)
What can be said about this set that hasn't already? For most numismatists, finally attaining a complete set of any series and at any grade level is a feat. Now, try to complete a full set of US numismatics in TOP conditions! This set contains examples worth several hundred dollars each all the way up to the multi-million-dollar "poster" coins. We are all waiting with anticipation for the completion of this monumental undertaking.
High Desert - U.S. Half Cents & Cents Complete Set with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1793-present)
This incredibly massive 587-piece set contains all the Half Cents and Cents ever minted by the United States from 1793 to date! And rather incredibly, High Desert has managed to acquire 99.49% of them, taking the top spot from the fabulous ESM collection in the All-Time Finest ranking. When you consider the scope and size of this set, the rating of 63.67 becomes even more impressive. With five Blue awards and one Gold in 2019, we are honored to award a second Gold to this superb effort.
The Black Cat Collection - U.S. Twenty Cents Complete Set, Circulation Strikes and Proof (1875-1878)
The ultimate specialist's set done extraordinarily well. This collection may tackle a small segment, but the consistent quality shown here can only be the result of years of selective searching. Beautiful original toning on most pieces and having the branch mint proof as the cornerstone cements the deal - killer set! This set overtook the Driftwood set for Current and All-Time Finest titles. 100% complete, it has a set rating of 66.23 of a possible 68.13 points. It should be noted that Driftwood had claimed the top spot within the PCGS registry since 2006!
D.L. Hansen Collection - Half Cents with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1793-1857)
Representing the pinnacle of Half Cent collections, this set combines outstanding rarity with impeccable quality.
High Desert - Large Cents with Major Varieties (With the four Ultra Rarities), Circulation Strikes (1793-1814)
Long recognized for its excellent quality, this splendid Large Cent collection was ranked Best of Registry 2013 through 2019 and is a 2014 Gold Award Winner. It is also the Current and All-Time Finest and enjoys a 55.10 set rating against a possible 57.42 points available.
High Desert - Large Cents with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1839-1857)
Representing the late Large Cent dates, this 33-coin collection is 100% complete and ranked #1. With its 67.31 rating out of a possible 68.57 points, it has been recognized as Best of Registry in 2015, and 2017 through 2019.
The Arizona Collection - Large Cents Classic Head Complete Variety Set, Circulation Strikes (1808-1814)
This 100% complete collection ranks #1, which is a challenging feat considering the extreme rarity of numerous varieties in this set, let alone the difficulty of obtaining Classic Head Large Cents in the top grades, regardless of date or die marriage.
Golden State Collection - Large Cents Die Variety Set by Sheldon, Circulation Strikes (1793)
An excellent collection, this 100% complete set ranks #1 and represents the first year of the Official United States Federal cent coinage. All 1793 Cents are extraordinarily rare and coveted, only emphasizing the premier nature of this set.
drtom's - Large Cents Die Variety Set by Newcomb, Circulation Strikes (1816-1839)
This impressive collection requiring 244 coins and offering a finest-possible grade point average of 65.80 is 99.59% complete and boasts a 54.95 point rating. One of the larger registry sets, this cabinet represents the complex middle years of the Large Cent denomination and is amongst the finest sets ever assembled.
Douglas M Wright Jr. - Flying Eagle Cents Complete Variety Set, Circulation Strikes (1856-1858)
An exceptional set by every measure, this set was ranked Best of Registry 2016, 2017, and 2019. It was also the 2018 Gold Award Winner. It is 100% complete with 20 items and is the Current and All-Time Finest, with a 63.33 set rating from a possible 65.90 points available.
The Jasper Mantooth/CCN Indian Set - Indian Cents Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1859-1909)
Any great Indian Cent collection takes time and effort to assemble. This marvelous set took three years to build. However, patience is a virtue, and this 55-coin collection was well worth the wait. It's 100% complete, has an impressive 68.88 rating, and ranks #1.
The Falcon Collection - Indian Cents Basic Set, Proof (1859-1909)
While there have been several incredible Proof Indian Cent sets over the years (including Tom Bender's set and the Palm Beach Collection) the current champion in this category is the Falcon Basic set with a lofty rating of 69.382. We congratulate Falcon on his second straight Gold award.
The Falcon Collection - Indian Cents with Major Varieties, Proof (1859-1909)
This Indian Cent set encompasses both circulation strikes and proofs, serving as a satisfying survey of this popular type. Ranking #1 and boasting a 69.12 rating, it's 100% complete.
The Ehreth Collection - Lincoln Cents with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1959-Present)
Ehreth has been competing in this category for a long time, having earned his first Blue Star back in 2004. Since then he has received six additional Blue awards and a Gold award for 2018, 2019, and now 2020. Very close behind is D.L. Hansen, whose rating is .23 points behind (68.83 vs. 68.60). Because these are relatively recent issues, many coins in the set are at the top of the population but there are enough opportunities to upgrade to make this a very interesting race to watch in 2021.
BLUE OCEAN - Lincoln Cents Basic Set, Proof (1950-1958)
The Current Finest and All-Time Finest set also won gold in 2019. This nine-coin set is 100% complete and is deceivingly difficult at this level, ranking 71.70 out of a possible 73.50 points. It ranks just barely ahead of a set by PCGS Set Registry Hall of Fame member Stewart Blay, who won from 2002 through 2018.
The Prestwick Collection - Shield Two Cents with Major Varieties, Proof (1864-1873)
This set is all about absolute top surface quality and color. In these grade ranges, even a single hairline can preclude a coin from receiving the top rating. This set includes many of the finest known examples and blazing Gem Red coins, despite beginning during the time of the Civil War! This set has now been retired and is ranked #2 All-Time Finest behind DL Hansen's set. It is 100% complete and carried a rating of 68.14 out of a possible 69.74 points.
tompet38 - Three Cent Nickels Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1865-1889)
Tompet38's complete set of Three Cent Nickels is noteworthy for his incredible quality, achieving an almost unheard-of set rating of 67.932. For a 19th-century set, this is quite remarkable. Of the 49 coins in this set, a mere half a dozen or so could possibly be improved, meaning -- of course -- that the balance sit at the top of the PCGS population. A well-earned fifth Gold Award for this fine set.
tompet38 - Three Cent Nickels with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes and Proof (1865-1889)
Tompet38’s complete set of Three Cent Nickels is noteworthy for his incredible quality, achieving an almost unheard-of set rating of 68.680. For a 19th century set, this is quite remarkable. Of the 49 coins in this set, a mere 14 could possibly be improved meaning of course that 35 sit at the top of the PCGS population. A well-earned fourth Gold Award for this fine set.
Little Ones III - Three Cent Silvers Complete Variety Set, Circulation Strikes (1851-1872)
Gorgeous toned Gems for the common slots and he/she has the tough varieties, too. Most collectors attempt only one of the two "styles." This set was ranked Best of Registry in 2019 and is the Current and All-Time Finest. It is 96.88% complete of 32 required coins (one other member, "Scarsdale," has the same completion) and has a 59.98 rating of 67.32 possible points available (the other member's set is 59.83).
cross1942 - Liberty Nickels Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1883-1912) - CAC
Perfect example of a set in which the quality for each coin is superb within the grade (even if they are not finest-known level)... It takes a tremendous amount of time looking at Liberty Nickels (or anything) to be able to pick them that well. This set is ranked the Current and All-Time Finest with 96.97% complete of 33 items and a 59.76 rating out of a possible 68.25 (the next closest member is 36.36% complete and has a 25.66 rating, so not even close). Perfect example of a set in which the quality of each coin is superb within the grade (even if they are not finest-known level). It takes a tremendous amount of time looking at Liberty Nickels (or anything) to be able to pick them that well.
FORSYTHEG - Liberty Nickels with 1913, Proof (1883-1913)
Any set containing a 1913 Liberty Nickel is worthy of an award, and Gerald Forsythe's incredible set of Proof Liberty Nickels takes the cake. And yes, there is more to it than simply including the 1913. The overall quality is superb, with over half the coins at the top of the PCGS pop report. The set rating of 68.798 pretty much speaks for itself and all but seven of the 32 coins are either CAM or DCAM examples. Second straight Gold award.
The JDG Trust Collection - Buffalo Nickels with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes and Proof (1913-1938)
(Note that the award includes the 1 sub-set in this collection which is ranked #1.) Boasting a set rating of 66.872, the Gately Collection of Buffalo Nickels is a most impressive accomplishment, featuring the finest known 1913-S Type 2, 1917-D, 1927-S, 1936-D 3 1/2 Legs and 1938-D/S and, oh, did we mention the finest known 1918/17-D as well? More impressive, might even be the fact that more than 30 coins of the 80 coins sit at the top of the population, which for a series such as Buffalo nickels is no mean feat. The Pasadena Collection of World Coins Manufactured by the Mints of the United States is an ambitious and incredible project featuring 1,090 coins for the set. This set requires a huge quantity of coins to assemble and has been put together with quality coins, many of which are Mint State and some finest known to date. The set is further enhanced by exceptional photos and comments featuring the mint, mintages, and other information that makes this set not only a collection, but also a resource for people to draw inspiration and information from. This amazing set is quite an accomplishment and is still being built to the present day.
