Welcome to the 2021 PCGS Set Registry Awards. We are excited to celebrate the 35th anniversary of PCGS this year, as well as the 20th anniversary of the Set Registry online. We were the first and we are still the biggest and best with nearly 2.1 million items in active inventory and over 31,000 active members.
We are proud to announce this year’s winners in multiple categories from around the world with an unprecedented number of awards. This year, we honor nearly 470 Platinum and Gold winners, which is almost 100 more than we awarded in 2020. It is also well over 400 more than any other registry in the industry.
This year, we also honored over 200 World, Everyman’s, and Lowball Sets combined, as we strive to include more collectors in the winner’s circle and recognize your accomplishments.
We would like to thank our team of judges, who dedicate their time to review and comb through several thousand sets each year over a relatively short period of time to find those we recognize as the best possible sets on the Set Registry. Getting to Gold is an incredible accomplishment and one that must be earned each year!

2021 GOLD LEVEL SETS
Gold is awarded to honor sets that are the best in their category and have been selected by our judging committee to be recognized for outstanding set building. The completeness and quality of each of these sets deserves recognition. Many of these sets have won in the past and some are new recipients of the gold award. Each of the following sets are truly impressive and worthy of the prestige of the gold award.
TOP CLASSIC SETS 1794-1964
High Desert - Complete U.S. Type Set, Circulation Strikes (1792-1964)
This collection is the Ferrari of U.S. Type Sets. Where many people will attempt this in mixed grades, (easily attainable coins in MS and rarities in low circ grades), High Desert has put together the best of the best. A collection of this magnitude not only requires a vast financial obligation, but more importantly patience and time.
D.L. Hansen Collection - Complete U.S. Type Set (1792-1964)
At one point or another, many if not most numismatists dream of putting together a basic U.S. Type Set. Mr. Hansen has taken that to the literal next level. Filling this set with absolute swoon-worthy coins. It isn't often that one has the ability to see some of the best-of-the-best coins individually, let alone several in the same collection. The replication of a set of this ilk would be daunting to say the least!
High Desert - Copper Type Set, Circulation Strikes (1793-1964)
Only two sets have historically reached 100% with an MS GPA. This set, and the Hansen set. High Desert has Hansen beat by over three points! This may seem a small number, but when we are talking this caliber of coins, it's a mountain!
High Desert - Silver Type Set, Circulation Strikes (1792-1964)
Upon first glance, this set obviously seems impressive. Then when you realize you have a high-end 1792 Half Disme and 1796 Quarter involved, it reaches new heights. This set is definitely a feat to be respected.
High Desert - Silver Type Set (1792-1964)
A gorgeous set of silver coins, this cabinet has been ranked Current Finest and All-Time Finest and was Best of Registry from 2012 through 2019. It is 100% complete with 68 coins and features a 66.42 rating out of a possible 67.77 For comparison's sake, the similar set held by legendary collector D.L. Hansen is at 65.85.
High Desert - Gold Type Set, Circulation Strikes (1795-1933)
This is another show stopper set from High Desert. With incredible rarities such as the 1796 $2 1/2 No Stars, to Wire and Rolled Edge $10 Indians, this set has it all. Another example of how with the right amount of time, financial means, and jumping on opportunities when they appear, world-class sets can be built and enjoyed!
High Desert - Gold Type Set (1795-1933)
This is another set from High Desert that has held top ranks for the better part of two decades. The state of preservation with a weighted GPA of over 65 is a testament to the collector's dedication and eye. Absolutely worthy of high praise.
The Black Collection - Gold Type Set 12 Piece, Circulation Strikes (1839-1933) - CAC
This popular collection of the 12 major pre-1933 United States gold types was established on December 17, 2019 and is the Current Finest and All-Time Finest. At 100% complete with its 12 coins, the set is among the finest of its type around with a 67.24 rating out of a possible 68.20.
D.L. Hansen Collection - First Year of Issue Type Set (1793-present)
Far and away the most dynamic example of this diverse set, D.L. Hansen's take on this challenging endeavor is outstanding. Numerous coins in this set are Finest-Knowns and the 100% completeness of this particular assemblage makes this effort worthy of top honors.
High Desert - 20th Century Gold Type Set, Circulation Strikes (1900-1933)
Another High Desert set that has been at the top of its game for nearly two decades. While the majority of this collection is readily available and attainable for most collectors, (with the exception of the Rolled and Wire Edge $10 Indians), the GPA is nearly unreachable. A gold type set of the highest order indeed!
High Desert - Complete U.S. Coin Design Set (1792-present)
There's been much contention at the top for Best in Show here, as less than two-tenths of a point on the GPA scale divide this set from runner-up, but indeed we have a winner. This set is absolutely stunning, with so many exquisite pieces and beautiful representations of each piece. It should be noted this set has also achieved Best of the Registry for 10 consecutive years!
Jim_McGuigan - Half Cent Type Set (1793-1857)
The Half Cent denomination spawned five design types, included here in this set created October 1, 2019. This 100% complete set is the Current Finest and All-Time Finest and has a 66.48 rating out of a possible 67.20 points. It beat out the Current Finest High Desert, which claimed the Best of Registry from 2013 through 2019 and a 65.90 score and bested the All-Time retired set as well - there's an impressive statement!
High Desert - Large Cent Type Set, Circulation Strikes (1793-1857)
With a weighted GPA of almost 67, this set is mind boggling! Most collectors dream of owning a 1793 Chain Cent in any condition. Finding one in XF is an absolute treat, let alone one in mint state! At this grade level and state of preservation, this set will likely be king for a great while longer!

This set was obviously put together by someone whose focus was not only on grade, but also on originality and eye appeal. This is one of those sets that is a true pleasure to click through the photos and see the coins in a state of preservation and beauty that would be a point of pride for the individual coin designers.
D.L. Hansen Collection - U.S. Coins Complete Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1792-present)
What can be said about this set that hasn't already? For most numismatists, finally attaining a complete set of any series and at any grade level is a feat. Now, try to complete a full set of U.S. numismatics in TOP conditions! This set contains examples worth several hundred dollars each all the way up to the multi-million-dollar "poster" coins. We are all waiting with anticipation for the completion of this monumental undertaking.
Atlantic Collection - Silver, Gold, Platinum & Palladium Eagles Complete Set, Circulation Strikes (1986-present)
This collection is 100% complete -- simply outstanding! This remarkably competitive set is not easy to build, as it consists of all business-strike examples of the American Eagle Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Palladium coins, and many of those pieces in the one-ounce size are downright expensive. This set has already won three Gold Awards from 2017-2019 and remained on top of the game in 2020.
OBSESSION - Silver, Gold, Platinum & Palladium Eagles Complete Set, Circulation Strikes and Proof (1986-present)
This set includes circulation and proof versions of Silver, Gold, Platinum and Palladium Eagles. With more than 500 coins required, this set is winning gold for a third year in a row and truly deserves it. With a Set Rating of 70.97, OBSESSION has almost the highest Set Rating currently possible.
High Desert - U.S. Half Cents & Cents Complete Set with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1793-present)
This incredibly massive set contains all the Half Cents and Cents ever minted by the United States from 1793 to date! And rather incredibly, High Desert has managed to acquire nearly 99% of them, taking the top spot from the fabulous ESM collection in the All-Time Finest ranking. When you consider the scope and size of this set, the rating of 63.9 becomes even more impressive. With five Blue awards and one Gold in 2019, we are honored to award a second Gold to this superb effort.
The Black Collection - U.S. Twenty Cents Complete Set, Circulation Strikes and Proof (1875-1878)
The ultimate specialist's set done extraordinarily well. This collection may tackle a small segment, but the consistent quality shown here can only be the result of years of selective searching. Beautiful original toning on most pieces and having the branch mint proof as the cornerstone cements the deal - killer set! This set overtook the Driftwood set for Current and All-Time Finest titles. 100% complete, it has a set rating of 66.22. It should be noted that Driftwood had claimed the top spot within the PCGS registry since 2006!
D.L. Hansen Collection - U.S. $20 Gold Complete Set with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1850-1932)
The United States series of circulating double eagles that were minted from 1850 through 1932 collectively represent one of the most popular coins ever produced -- and they're gold, to boot. The sheer difficulty of completing this set is off the charts. Even acquiring just one common-date double eagle in circulated condition represents a huge financial stretch for so many collectors. Building a cabinet like this -- all dates in the best uncirculated grades -- is the type of endeavor that can take decades for even the most well-heeled collectors. This set is exceptional in every sense of the word.

Expanding on the already daunting objective of building a complete date run of half cents from 1793 through 1857 is this effort, which incorporates the many major varieties found on these coins, many of which were struck by dies that were hand cut. This set is an absolute stunner -- so many exceptional pieces, each outstanding and all culminating here in the type of collection any collector of early American coppers would be proud to own.

This virtually complete set of half cents includes all circulation issues, the major varieties, and proofs. Awesome quality through and through, with a resplendant diversity of pieces representing the entire gamut of half cent production. A museum-quality presentation of coins that have long been forgotten by the public but deeply beloved by collectors to this day.
High Desert - Large Cents with Major Varieties (With the four Ultra Rarities), Circulation Strikes (1793-1814)
Long recognized for its excellent quality, this splendid Large Cent collection was ranked Best of Registry 2013 through 2019 and is a 2014 Gold Award Winner. It is also the Current and All-Time Finest and enjoys a 55.10 set rating against a possible 57.42 points available.
High Desert - Large Cents with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1839-1857)
Representing the late Large Cent dates, this 33-coin collection is 100% complete and ranked #1. With its 67.31 rating out of a possible 68.57 points, it has been recognized as Best of Registry in 2015, and 2017 through 2019.
The Arizona Collection - Large Cents Classic Head Complete Variety Set, Circulation Strikes (1808-1814)
This 100% complete collection ranks #1, which is a challenging feat considering the extreme rarity of numerous varieties in this set, let alone the difficulty of obtaining Classic Head Large Cents in the top grades, regardless of date or die marriage.
Golden State Collection - Large Cents Die Variety Set by Sheldon, Circulation Strikes (1793)
An excellent collection, this 100% complete set ranks #1 and represents the first year of the Official United States Federal cent coinage. All 1793 Cents are extraordinarily rare and coveted, only emphasizing the premier nature of this set.
drtom's - Large Cents Die Variety Set by Newcomb, Circulation Strikes (1816-1839)
This impressive collection requiring 244 coins and offering a finest-possible grade point average of 65.80 is 99.59% complete and boasts a 54.95 point rating. One of the larger registry sets, this cabinet represents the complex middle years of the Large Cent denomination and is amongst the finest sets ever assembled.
Douglas M Wright Jr. - Flying Eagle Cents Complete Variety Set, Circulation Strikes (1856-1858)
An exceptional set by every measure, this set was ranked Best of Registry 2016, 2017, and 2019. It was also the 2018 Gold Award Winner. It is 100% complete with 20 items and is the Current and All-Time Finest, with a 63.33 set rating from a possible 65.90 points available.
The Falcon Collection - Indian Cents Complete Variety Set, Proof (1859-1909)
This set of Proof Indian Cents is simply gorgeous. These coins are among the very best in existence, and the fact that this set encompasses not just the regular-issue proofs but also the varieties (not an easy feat), helps bolster its score to the cream of the crop. This is the kind of set that so many Indian Cent enthusiasts hope to complete one day.

While there have been several incredible Proof Indian Cent sets over the years (including Tom Bender's set and the Palm Beach Collection) the current champion in this category is the Falcon Basic set with a lofty rating of 69.382. We congratulate Falcon on his second straight Gold award.

This Indian Cent set encompasses both circulation strikes and proofs, serving as a satisfying survey of this popular type. Ranking #1 and boasting a 69.12 rating, it's 100% complete.
D.L. Hansen Collection - Lincoln Cents Classic Set, Circulation Strikes (1909-1964)
The Lincoln Cent series is undeniably one of the most popular series ever produced, luring collectors of all ages and levels of experience. Lincoln Cents can offer an amazing degree of challenge, as this set -- among the highest-end of circulation-issue sets, goes to show. All the early dates, including the keys, are in exemplary grades and the latter ones are nearly flawless. An outstanding effort.
Stewart Blay - Lincoln Cents Basic Set, Proof (1909-Present)
Building a set of proof Lincoln Cents isn't particularly easy, especially considering the difficulty in even finding the early matte proofs from 1909 through 1916. Locating stellar examples of those early pieces is challenging enough, but add to it building a set of pristine Lincoln Proofs over the course of their long run as does this set and one's talking about a Herculean undertaking.
D.L. Hansen Collection - Lincoln Cents Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1909-1958)
More than half a century after the last example rolled off the U.S. Mint presses, Lincoln Wheat Cents continue enthralling collectors -- and compelling them to build the very best sets of these classic copper coins possible. That was certainly the case here, as this superior Lincoln Wheat Cent collection entails only the best of the best.

A truly exceptional set of early Lincoln Cents, this Registry Set was born on September 26, 2019 and was the Current Finest and All-Time Finest as of the award date. With 69 coins, it is 100% complete and has a score of 69.93 points.

It’s virtually picture perfect and displays immaculate eye-appeal. Then, take a look at either one of the Proof British Trade Dollars. The 1910-B appears as a toned work of pastel art and the 1897-B displays masterful rich tones. It never ends with this set. The beauty goes on and on.
