2019 年奖项
For almost two decades, the PCGS Set Registry® has been awarding top sets as a part of the Annual PCGS Set Registry Awards. During our first awards season in 2002, only fifteen sets were awarded. Every year since then the number of top sets has continued to increase as the Set Registry has grown. Heading into our 18th award season, almost 300 awards will have been handed out for sets receiving top honors in 2019. With over 100,000 sets, 20,000 collectors participating and over 1,600,000 coins registered in active inventory, it’s no wonder there are so many top sets being recognized this year.
As the number of sets has increased over time, so has the difficulty level of the judging process. Of the sets being judged, over 40,000 of these sets have a completion factor in the 90-100% range. With 100+ countries represented and thousands of categories to choose from, the PCGS Set Registry continues to be the standard for collectors around the world to build their collections and the preferred platform used to compete with fellow collectors sharing the passion of numismatics.

Platinum is awarded to the currently active sets and collections that have won gold awards for five years in a row and continue to be ranked number one within their respective set composites going into their sixth award winning year. 2019 GOLD LEVEL SETS
Gold is awarded to honor sets that are the best in their category and have been selected by our judging committee to be recognized for outstanding set building. The completeness and quality of each of these sets deserves recognition. Many of these sets have won in the past and some are new recipients of the gold award. Each of the following sets are truly impressive and worthy of the prestige of the gold award.
Best Classic Sets of 2019
Oliver Jung - The Type Set - Complete U.S. Type Set (1792-1964)
There are few collecting goals that U.S. numismatists aspire to more than a complete type set of U.S. coins. And no one has done it better than Oliver Jung! Not the incredible High Desert Collection (Hall of Fame set and LONG-time registry winner), not Louis Eliasberg and not even D. L Hansen has assembled a better set. With a set rating of 66.691, it’s almost within a point of the theoretical maximum. The early copper is amazing, with MS66 and 67RB examples of most of the 18th century entries. Likewise, the early silver and gold is replete with finest-knowns and near finest-knowns. In fact, most of the avenues for improvement now lie in the “easy” stuff – mid 20th century stuff where a 68+ or 69 could replace a 68! A most deserving entry into the Hall of Fame!
High Desert - Silver Type Set, Circulation Strikes (1792-1964)
There are some real heavyweights competing here, including The Type Set and D.L Hansen – but for 2019 at least, High Desert’s set remains the one to beat. The recipient of either a Blue or Gold Star award in six of the past seven years, we again award a Gold Star to his 100% complete set. It’s set rating of 65.76 is admittedly slim over the second place set with 65.66, with the third place set not far behind at 64.84. We will await future developments in this tight race.
High Desert - Gold Type Set, Circulation Strikes (1795-1933)
Up for its fifth gold star award, the High Desert Gold Type Set is a most impressive accomplishment, with a set rating just shy of 65. Remember this includes all the issues from 1795, including the 1796 No Stars $2,50, the 1808 $2,50, the Draped Bust, Small Eagle $10, and the 1907 Wire Edge $10 so achieving a set rating of this magnitude was no easy task!
D.L. Hansen Collection - U.S. Coins Complete Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1792-present)
What can one say about this set other than to note that it contains 3703 items and Mr. Hansen has achieved a completeness percentage of an amazing 99.65% and with a GPA weighted set rating of 63.1! No one else is even remotely close, with the second all-time finest set at only 67.16% complete – which is still an impressive number for a set such as this. Lacking only a dozen coins, this is a collecting accomplishment that will stand for decades. We salute Mr. Hansen’s tenacity and devotion to the hobby.
High Desert - U.S. Half Cents & Cents Complete Set with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1793-present)
This incredibly massive 586-piece set contains all the Half Cents and Cents ever minted by the United States from 1793 to date! And rather incredibly, High Desert has managed to acquire 99.66% of them, taking the top spot from the fabulous ESM collection in the All-Time Finest ranking. When you consider the scope and size of this set, the rating of 63.28 becomes even more impressive. After four Blue Star awards, we are honored to award a Gold Star to this superb effort.
Monte Weiner (The BigMo Collection) - Civil War Set with Gold (1861-1865)
The Civil War was a most traumatic time for our nation, and with the Southern mints in transition during 1861, a fascinating period for coin collectors. BigMo has managed to assemble all 111 coins in this historic set (including gold!) and has achieved a set rating of 62.28. A few of the numerous highlights include one of the finest known 1861-D Half Eagles, the finest known 1862-S silver set, a Proof 65 1862 Eagle, and Proof 65+ 1862 Double Eagle. Fourteen coins are absolute finest knowns with another five in the “un-improvable” class. A Hall of Fame set and Gold Star winner for the past four years, it is more than deserving of a fifth this year.
Jim McGuigan - Half Cents Die Variety Set by Cohen, Circulation Strikes (1793-1857)
Longtime half cent collector and expert Jim McGuigan has assembled a superb quality set of half cents by Cohen variety, exceeding the set rating of the famous Missouri Collection, which was broken up several years ago. We are proud to award Jim his fifth consecutive Gold Star for this extremely tough set.
High Desert - Large Cents with Major Varieties (With the four Ultra Rarities), Circulation Strikes (1793-1857)
High Desert’s Large Cent set is a most impressive accomplishment and at 100% complete, contains such prohibitively rare pieces such as the 1793 Strawberry Leaf Wreath cent, the 1795 Reeded Edge and both varieties of the Jefferson Head. After two Blue Stars in 2013 and 2014 followed by four consecutive Golds, we’re extending the run for 2019 with a fifth Gold.
The Foreside Collection - Flying Eagle Cents with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes and Proof (1856-1858)
While not a large set, Foreside’s Flying Eagles are of extremely high quality with more than half of the set now unimprovable and the remaining portion only able to be upgraded by a tiny handful of coins. The set rating of 66.60 speaks for itself. This is a competitive set with two other sets in contention, but for 2019, Foreside retains the title and a fifth Gold Star.
The Falcon Collection - Indian Cents Basic Set, Proof (1859-1909)
While there have been several incredible Proof Indian Cent sets over the years (including Tom Bender’s set and the Palm Beach Collection) the current champion in this category is the Falcon Basic set with a lofty rating of 67.89. D. L. Hanson is not far behind, trailing by less than half a point, so this will be an interesting set to watch over the coming year. We congratulate Falcon on his first Gold Star award.
VarietySeeker - Lincoln Cents Complete Variety Set, Circulation Strikes (1909-Present)
This is a massive 442 piece set consisting of numerous RPM and DDO/DDR varieties. Lacking only one piece from completion, VarietySeeker tops this popular set by more than a point and after two Blue Star awards over the past couple of years, we are recognizing this accomplishment with a Gold Star Award for 2019.
AU_Hobby - Lincoln Cents Complete Variety Set, Circulation Strikes and Proof (1909-Present)
Like the Circulation Strike Lincoln Variety set, including the Proofs makes this another massive set requiring over 560 items for completion. AU Hobby has dominated this one for the past five years, earning his fourth consecutive Gold Star award this year.
Rglerdude - Lincoln Cents Complete Variety Set, Proof (1959-present)
Rglerdude took the title for this set in 2018 with a razor thin margin over AU Hobby and maintains his lead for 2019 earning his second Gold Star award in the process.
The Ehreth Collection - Lincoln Cents with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1959-Present)
Ehreth has been competing in this category for a long time, having earned his first Blue Star back in 2004. Since then he has received five additional Blue Stars and a Gold Star for 2018 and now, 2019. Very close behind is D.L. Hansen whose rating is only .03 points behind (68.52 vs. 68.49). Because these are relatively recent issues, many coins in the set are at the top of the population but there are enough opportunities to upgrade to make this a very interesting race to watch in 2020.
Dan Cent - Shield Two Cents with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1864-1872)
Dan Cent’s Two Cent Piece collection is entirely full red, and with the exception of three MS65RD pieces, all MS66RD. With a Blue Star in 2015 followed by three Gold Stars, we are happy to add a fourth Gold Star for 2019. Nice job Dan.
Bob Simpson - Shield Two Cents Basic Set, Circulation Strikes and Proof (1864-1873)
Near the threshold of perfection, Simpson’s set of Two Cent Pieces in MS and Proof is a wonder to behold. Boasting a set rating of a mind-boggling 68.24, over a quarter of the set consists of finest knowns and every coin in the set is either full red, or a cameo. This was a new set in 2015, and has easily earned its fifth Gold Star Award.

tompet38 - Three Cent Nickels with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes and Proof (1865-1889)
Tompet38’s complete set of Three Cent Nickels is noteworthy for his incredible quality, achieving an almost unheard-of set rating of 68.82. For a 19th century set, this is quite remarkable. Of the 49 coins in this set, a mere 14 could possibly be improved meaning of course that 35 sit at the top of the PCGS population. A well-earned third Gold Star for this fine set.
The JDG Trust Collection - Buffalo Nickels with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes and Proofs (1913-1938)
(Note that the award includes the 1 sub-set in this collection which is ranked #1.) Boasting a set rating of 66.94, the Gately Collection of Buffalo Nickels is a most impressive accomplishment, featuring the finest known 1913-S Type 2, 1917-D, 1927-S, 1936-D 3 1/2 Legs and 1938-D/S and, oh, did we mention the finest known 1918/17-D as well? More impressive, might even be the fact that 39 of the 80 coins sit at the top of the population, which for a series such as Buffalo nickels is no mean feat. This set continues to improve each year and leads the second place set by over two points. Our congratulations on a well-deserved Gold Star after four Blue Star awards.
Tom Bender - Capped Bust Half Dimes with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1829-1837)
Tom has long specialized in Capped and Seated coinage, and his Capped Half Dime set is a good example of his quality standards. His rating of 67.74 has a commanding lead of more than 2 points over the second-place set earning him a fourth consecutive Gold Star. This is a surprisingly competitive set, with ten sets currently at 100% completion on the Registry.
Tom Bender - Liberty Seated Half Dimes with Major Varieties & 1870-S, Circulation Strikes (1837-1873)
(Note that the award includes the 2 sub-sets in this collection which are ranked #1.)
With a set rating of 65.94 and at 98.72% completion, TomBender’s set of Liberty Seated Half Dimes sits atop the PCGS Registry for 2019, earning its third consecutive Gold Star.
Link Early American Silver - Capped Bust Dimes with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1809-1837)
Link captured the Gold last year, topping longtime champion Easton in this category. He has maintained his lead for 2019 earning his second Gold Star. But a third challenger has appeared which will keep this race interesting for next year.
Stewart Blay - Barber Dimes with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1892-1916)
This is a highly competitive category, and with the “retirement” of the Simpson collection to Platinum in 2014, Varieties Incorporated took the top spot in 2015. With a set rating just over 67.5, this 100% complete set takes home its fifth Gold Star award. Roughly half of the 76 coins in this set sit atop their respective population figures, so we’re approaching perfection here.
Link Early American Silver - Capped Bust Quarters with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1815-1838)
(Note that the award includes the 1 sub-set in this collection which is ranked #1.) This is an incredible set made of up many pop 1, finest known coins including the very scarce 1823/2 overdate. Over half of the coins sit on top of the Pop Report. The set rating of 65.03 speaks for itself as these early quarters are fairly scarce in almost any grade, much less MS66 and 67. This set is receiving its fifth Gold Star and has quickly eclipsed Eliasberg, Garrett, Norweb and other famous collections by a healthy margin.

1TwoBits (Marx Collection) - Early Quarters Die Variety Set by A.W. Browning, Circulation Strikes (1796-1838)
This is an obscure and tough set including all the Browning varieties of a low mintage series. Due to the rarity of some varieties, Mint State pieces are not always possible. 1TwoBits has done this set in an average grade of XF, which is quite high for these early coins. He has earned a third consecutive Gold Star this year.
Bob Simpson - Liberty Seated Quarters, Proof (1858-1891)
This set has been the focus of several major players who have traded the lead several times over the past decade. While Simpson has topped the chart for the past five years, past champions Perfection and Greenwich had also assembled great sets. In the past year or two, D.L Hansen has entered the fray, and will certainly be a strong contender in the coming year. Nevertheless, this year’s Gold again goes to Bob Simpson.
RSD - Barber Quarters Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1892-1916)
With the retirement of Perfection’s set last year, RSD now holds the title for the finest Barber Quarter Circulation Strike set. With an incredibly high set rating of 68.36, RSD takes home his second Gold Star Award in as many years, and we congratulate him on his achievement.
Bob Simpson - Barber Quarters, Proof (1892-1915)
Like his Proof Seated Quarters, Simpson’s Barber Quarters simply amaze. Here now is a set with a rating of an unimaginable 69.944, with almost 2/3 of the set at the top of the Pop charts and nearly all of those, alone in their position as absolute finest knowns. Simpson generously shares his sets with superb quality photos, so take a moment to see that has been accomplished. A well-deserved fifth consecutive Gold Star – you won’t find better.
Link Early American Silver - Early Half Dollars with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1794-1839)
In the area of early American silver, Link’s sets dominate in several important categories. One of the greatest sets is the set of Early Half Dollars with Major Varieties 1794-1839. Link has managed to complete the set (the only one to do so) and holds a commanding 12-point lead over his closest contender. After being dominated by Dale Friend’s collection for nearly a decade, Link took the Blue four years ago, and has now earned his third consecutive Gold Star.
Earlyhalves - Capped Bust Half Dollars with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1807-1839)
Bust Halves have long been a favorite with collectors. Common enough so that a novice can begin a set, yet with enough rare varieties to challenge the most advanced numismatist, the early halves have provided enjoyment to collectors for generations. For the past six years, Earlyhalves has led the pack for this set earning three Blues and three Golds since 2013. His set rating of 57.88 has earned him a fourth Gold for 2019, but close behind is Chicago, and next year may tell a different story. Stay tuned.
Link Early American Silver - Capped Bust Half Dollars Prime Die Variety Set by Overton, Circulation Strikes (1807-1836)
A complete set of Overton Halves consisting of 450 coins simply boggles the mind – not so much for the value but for the sheer difficulty of locating all the varieties. Link has managed to just about get there, assembling 447 of the 450 varieties for a completion rate of an amazing 99.33%. And for quality, the set sits at 62.8, and when you consider the rarity of some varieties, it is all the more incredible. A Hall of Fame set, and our honor and privilege to award a fourth Gold Star.
Ron Bauer Walkers - Walking Liberty Half Dollars with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes and Proofs (1916-1947)
Walkers have long been among the most popular coins in U.S. numismatics, and among the most competitive sets on the Registry. Ron managed to assemble the current finest set in his first year, improved it by adding the final coin (a 1941 Proof) in the second year. With a set rating of 66.8, he continues to lead in his fourth year on the Registry and we heartily congratulate Ron on a fourth consecutive Gold Star award and trust this set still has great things in store for the future.
D. L. Hansen Collection - Trade Dollars with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes and Proof (1873-1885)
Yes, this set is complete including the 1884 and 1885 Proofs! Not only that, but it boasts a set rating of 67.1, placing it not only at the top of the Current Finest list but the All-Time Finest list as well. Of the 13 Proof issues, all but two sit at the top of the PCGS pop and are unimprovable. Certainly a set that will stand as the finest for quite a while.
D. L. Hansen Collection - Morgan Dollars Prooflike with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1878-1921)
With the DT Miller by Ashmore collection in Platinum “retirement,” what better new contender could there be than D.L Hansen’s incredible new set which currently falls within .05 points on the Set Rating? Containing numerous “top pops” and “finest-knowns” this set is over 85% DMPL and holds a commanding lead over the next set in line. After winning two previous Blue Star awards, it now has captured the Gold for 2019.
David T. Miller and C. Ash Harrison - Morgan Dollars Super Set, Circulation Strikes (1878-1921)
With 331 required items (combining the Major Variety set and the Major VAM set) the Super Set is a very serious and comprehensive undertaking. Sitting atop the Registry this year is the Miller/Ashmore set, with a rating of 61.85 and 99.4% complete. To lend some idea of the difficulty of this set, there are some 98 different coins required for the year 1878 alone! As tough as this set is, there are three others that are complete or nearly so indicating the high interest in this area among Set Registry participants.
D. L. Hansen Collection - Liberty Head $2-1/2 Gold with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1840-1907)
With such toughies as the 1854-S, 1864, 1865 and 1875, this is a challenging set. Trailing only the legendary Harry Bass on the All-Time Finest list, Mr. Hansen has achieved 98% completion in short order, and we expect before long, for this set to stand fully completed. PCGS is proud to award a first Gold Star to this fine set.
The Matte Proof Gold Set - Indian Head $2-1/2 Gold, Proof (1908-1915)
This is a small set of only 8 coins, but as we all know, when it comes to Proof Gold, even a small set is a substantial undertaking. Since 2015, The Matte Proof Gold Set has reigned supreme here, and 2019 continues the streak for a fifth year. The set rating of 68.63 will be hard to beat, as the current finest possible is only 68.87.
D. L. Hansen Collection - Liberty Head $5 Gold with Motto Set, Circulation Strikes (1866-1908)
D. L. Hansen’s set of “With Motto” $5 Libs is certainly impressive as it is both complete, and in high grade for this type. Numerous dates in the 1860s and 1870s are unknown in Mint State, so the set rating of 58.59 is certainly more than respectable. We are turning the Blue Star awarded in 2018 to Gold for 2019.
D. L. Hansen Collection - Liberty Head $10 Gold with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1838-1907)
Lacking only the impossibly tough 1875 (of which fewer than 10 are known) the balance of Mr. Hansen’s set has a rating of about 58.5. When one considers the numerous dates in this series where Mint State pieces are unknown, that rating pretty much speaks for itself. While the All-Time Finest list shows a few completed sets here, at present, D.L. Hansen is the sole contender in the current registry. Like is $5 Liberty set, we’ll change his Blue Star to Gold this year.
D. L. Hansen Collection - Liberty Head $20 Gold with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1850-1907)
For many years, the AWA collection was the one to beat in this category. No longer, as D. L Hansen’s incredible set of $20 Liberties has now topped not only the Current Finest, but the All-Time Finest list as well. To get a true picture of the quality of this set, of the 149 items required, 83 are unimprovable as none have been graded higher and of those 83, 38 are absolute finest knowns, with no others of equal or higher grade. Lacking only the 1861 Paquet (2 known!) we salute this absolutely incredible set. We proudly award what will likely be the first of many Gold Stars.
Rollo Fox Collection - St. Gaudens $20 Gold with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1907-1932)
With the legendary Simpson collection having achieved Platinum status, the Fox collection as stepped up to be the “one to beat” in this extremely popular series. Fox has taken the top spot now for three consecutive years, but hot on his heels is Mr. Hansen, so this set will be another great one to watch in the coming years.
Best Modern Sets of 2019
Mitchell Spivack (Wondercoin) - Top 100 Modern Coins
This set has some of the best if not the best coins in the modern era. There are a number of coins in this set that many collectors have dreamed of such as the 1969-S Double Die Lincoln Cent, the No S Proof coins, the Cheerios Dollar, the Wisconsin Extra leaf quarters, the mysterious 1964 Special Mint Sets and numerous popular Doubled Die coins. This set is one of the most exciting sets, if not the most exiting set, that a collector can build in the modern era category. Although the completion factor is the same as when the set was awarded gold in 2016, the GPA has improved to 69.66, triggering a sixth gold award. All of the “missing” coins are unobtainable, such as the 1964-D Peace Dollar, the 1974 Aluminum Cent or the 2000-W Sacagawea Quarter in 22K gold, so the set is to all intents, complete!
Goldminer's Collection - U.S. Silver Complete Modern Set, Circulation Strikes and Proof (1971-present)
With a Set Rating of 70.76, 100% completion and three previous consecutive Gold Star awards, Goldminer has set a high bar for this set. It’s a massive set, with some 568 required items and even though they are of comparatively recent vintage, achieving a rating of 70.76 is no easy task. We are pleased to award a fourth consecutive Gold Star to this great accomplishment.
Atlantic Collection - Silver, Gold, Platinum & Palladium Eagles Complete Set, Circulation Strikes (1986-present)

KCV Sets - Jefferson Nickels FS Complete Variety Set, Circulation Strikes and Proof (1938-Present)
This complete set, with almost 350 coins, contains all Jefferson Nickels including all of the Fivaz/Stanton varieties graded by PCGS for both circulation strikes and proofs. This set has won “Best of the Registry” in the past but this will be the first year that this set has won gold. With a current Set Rating of 67.98 there’s not much room for improvement but it is still possible.

Not only is this set the highest ranked within it’s set composite, the coins within this set qualify for three separate composites and each of the owner’s sets are ranked number one for their respective composites. PCGS had the pleasure of displaying this set at the June 2019 Long Beach Expo. Many coins within this set are either tied for top pop or are the finest graded by PCGS.

Best Mint, Proof and Year Sets of 2019
High Desert - 1793 Mint Set
Yes, it’s a small set with only four coins. But what four coins! The 1793 Half Cent, and the Chain, Wreath and Cap cents of 1793. All three of the Cents are finest knowns. In fact, his 1793 Cap Cent has traces of mint red. Most collectors would consider any one of these coins, in nearly any grade, as a centerpiece of their collection. Here is a set of all four with a GPA of 66.62! A GPA over 66 for a 1793 Mint set? Yup. Second place trails by over seven points! Talk about incredible… a most deserving fifth Gold Star.
Merion Collection - 1906 Mint Set
Merion’s 1906 Mint Set is of uniformly outstanding quality, with all but one in the 66 and 67 category and nearly all with lovely original toning. A Gold Star winner for the past three years, we’ll extend that to four years now with another Gold Star.
PSC (Paul Covey) - 1999-Present Mint Set with Major Varieties
The PSC set has received the “Best of the Registry” for seven years in a row, this will be the first year that this set has been selected by our judges to receive the gold award. With an overall Set Rating of 67.81, PSC nudged the next competing set from the top spot.
Mi Amor - 2005-2010 Mint Set Satin Finish
“Mi Amor,” what a perfect name for this set, clearly this set is the love of the owner with an impressive 69.20 overall Set Rating. Mi Amor has won “Best of the Registry” or a gold award for the last four years, now earning the top spot of gold for 2019.
JNJSJB - 2009-Present Mint Set
JNJSJB is currently ranked number one with a Set Rating of 67.89. This set requires over 300 coins and continues to grow as newly minted coins are added each year.
midsouthcoin (Harry Warren) - 1866 Proof Set
Harry’s 1866 Proof Set includes the absolute finest “With Rays” Nickel (the only PR67 DCAM) as well as several other “top pop” coins. All are cameo or deep cameo and all the silver except the dollar have fantastic original toning. The set rating of 68.59 pretty much says it all, and after 10 Blue Stars (2008-2017) and a Gold in 2018, we see no reason to stop this impressive run. A well-earned Gold for 2019.
D. Lud - 1873 Proof Set
Most Proof Sets are fairly small, typically containing five or six items. Not so with the 1873, which contains 14 items, not including the gold issues! D. Lud has certainly set a high bar for this comprehensive set, putting up a 100% complete set with a rating of 66.27. Nearly all the silver coins are magnificently toned, and all are top quality for the grade. Nicely done!
Soonerfan - 1892 Proof Set
While there are no mega rarities in this set, assembling all six coins with a rating of 69.46 pretty much says it all. After six Blue Star awards in a row, it’s time to recognize this set with a Gold Star. Congratulations!

Mel’s new entry this year contains coins from his birth year, and what an impressive start. With a Set Rating of 66.87 and virtually all the coins in MS66 and higher, we’re looking forward to seeing where Mel is able to take this set in the coming year.
DNFT Man - 1950 Year Set
With the return of Proof sets and a smattering of Booker T. Washington commemorative issues, the 1950 Year Set includes some 21 different items. Putting together all of them in top grade was a job DNFT Man tackled and did quite a good job. A set rating of 67.86 earned him a Gold Star in 2018 and again in 2019.
Best Colonials, Private Issues & Territorial Gold, Pattern & Medals Sets of 2019
High End Basic Set - Philippines Complete Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1903-1945)
For the past five years, this comprehensive Philippines set has been dominated by High End, and 2019 is no exception. It is a fairly large set of 144 items, and High End has completed it with a rating of 63.12. Last U.S. Cavalry Charge is not far behind, but for this year, High End has earned his fifth consecutive Gold Star.
Aloha Colorado - Hawaii with Tokens, Circulation Strikes (1847-1891)
The coinage of the Hawaiian Islands (1847-1891) has long been popular and when you include the obscure tokens, this becomes a very challenging set. Many of the tokens are unknown in high grade, so the set rating of 51.65, while not appearing impressive at first glance, actually is quite high. Oddly, nearly all of the possible improvement in this set comes from the “regular” coinage done in 1847 and 1883. After six Blue Star awards from 2007-2016 and a Gold Star last year, we again award a Gold Star to this rare and unusual set.
The Black Cat Collection - Trade Dollar Patterns - Short Set (1873)
The late 1860s and 1870s were fertile times for patterns, and Black Cat has assembled an incredible array of pattern Trade Dollars. Consisting of six very different designs, every coin in this set is the highest graded by PCGS, so his rating of 67.583 is also the Current Finest Possible. While Simpson has topped this category for the past four years, Black Cat has conclusively captured the Gold for 2019.
Bob Simpson - Amazonian Patterns - Gold (1872)
Few, if any pattern sets can approach the recognition and admiration of the famous Amazonian Gold Set of 1872. The set is unique and the comment on our own board probably says it all best: Simply stunning! Probably the best example of the Mint's best and brightest. This set together is a true national treasure. While there is obviously no competition for this, it is an honor to have it on our Registry and we have awarded it a 4th Gold Star as well as Hall of Fame status.
Bob Simpson - Gobrecht Dollar Patterns Redbook Set (1836-1839)
The Gobrecht Dollar Patterns of the late 1830s are among the most interesting and desirable of the silver issues of the mid-19th century. All are very rare, and completing the set is an achievement in itself. Doing it with three finest known’s and a Set Rating of 65.536 is nothing short of amazing. But at this point, we expect that from Mr. Simpson. Another Gold Star Award for the shelf! Is there any room left?

Cardinal - Libertas Americana Medals
Few people realize the number of Libertas Americana medal varieties, but we have 20 in our Set Composition. Granted, a number of these are fairly recent restrikes, but at least four are “originals” all of which this set has in Mint State. This design has long resonated with collectors of U.S. coins as it served as the inspiration for the “Flowing hair / Liberty cap” motifs which characterized our earliest coinage. A third Gold Star for this complete set.
J & L Norse Set - Norse American Commemorative Medals (1925)
These interesting Medals have always attracted the attention of collectors, and J&L has put together the ultimate set, with both the finest-known Silver Thick, and Gold medals. What more can we add but a third Gold Star Award for this fine collecting accomplishment.
Best Low Ball Sets of 2019
Vinny Kid - Barber Quarters, Low Ball (1892-1916)
Back in the early and mid-20th century, our coins really circulated! A dime or a quarter represented some real spending money and could actually buy something useful. So, these coins were spent over and over, and over a period of 30 or 40 years, wore down to grades of FR02 and AG03 pretty regularly. (Contrast this to today, when you can often find 40- or 50-year-old coins in XF and AU condition.) Vinny Kid has assembled a complete set of Barber Quarters, all in Poor 01 or Fair 02 condition with a GPA of 1.636. Finding these is often far tougher than the higher Mint State examples and a set like this takes decades of patient searching to put together. Our congratulations on a 3rd Gold Star award.
Chesapeake Collection - Barber Half Dollars, Low Ball (1892-1915)
When Barber Halves were current, they each represented between $10 and $15 worth of purchasing power today. You could certainly purchase a decent meal at a restaurant. So, they circulated – a lot! Chesapeake has gathered the hardest workers from the first couple decades of the last century and presents them all in grades ranging from PO01 to AG03. Chesapeake has earned three previous Gold Star awards for this set, and it is well deserving of a fourth.
LOW Hanging Fruit - Peace Dollars, Low Ball (1921-1935)
If any Lowball set epitomizes what it’s all about, it’s this one! Achieving a perfect score of 1.0 (which translates to an inverted Set Rating of 71.47) this set features all 24 Peace Dollars in a grade of PO-01. Wow. There have been a couple of close contenders over the past decade or so, including Jimmy Austin’s Best of the Worst and the Chesapeake Collection, but Low Hanging Fruit has achieved perfection in this category. A very well-earned third Gold Star for 2019 and our congratulations for having assembled a really tough set.
Worn Out - Silver Commemoratives 50 Piece Type Set, Low Ball (1892-1954)
A lowball set of heavily circulated coins like Barber Halves or Mercury Dimes is one thing. But a set of coins like Commemoratives that rarely circulated is another story. No doubt, many of these were carried as pocket or “lucky” pieces but seeing a Bay Bridge in AG03 or a Stone Mountain in PO-01 is not something you see every day. Or every week. Worn Out’s set averages 18.5 and even includes a Lafayette Dollar in PO01! It’s more than worth a few moments to check out Worn Out’s photographs just to see some very familiar coins as you’ve never seen them before. (Note that Not Mint To Be – Pocketpiece Commemoratives went Platinum, and is no longer in contention.)
Best Everyman Sets of 2019
The Cumberland Valley Collection - Everyman Complete U.S. Type Set (1792-1964)
While much of the Set Registry awards the very wealthy, the “Everyman” portion recognizes the achievements of collectors not blessed with fabulous riches. Cumberland Valley has managed to assemble an almost complete (98.32%) appealing circulated type set lacking only the very tough 1793 Cap Cent and the Small Eagle Draped Bust Half. Eye appeal is every bit as important in circulated coins as it is in MS coins (some might argue even more so) and Cumberland has put together a very nice set.
George's Legacy - Everyman Liberty Nickels (1883-1912)
Even though the Everyman series is limited to circulated coins, that in no way diminishes the intense competition and close approach to perfection that characterizes the rest of the Registry. Like most of the winning Everyman sets, George’s Liberty Nickels all grade either AU58 or AU58+ and the set rating of 59.18 likewise indicates the close approach to the ideal Everyman set. This is a competitive category with two other sets at completion and with a rating above 58.5. A repeat Gold Star winner for 2019, we offer our thanks and congratulations.
Everyman Barber Dimes - Everyman Barber Dimes (1892-1916)
Everyman Barber Dimes sports a nearly perfect run of AU coins with the exception of the 06-O. We’re certain that’s on the “upgrade” list, but for now, the set is plenty good enough for a repeat of its Gold in 2018 with a second.
Cornhusker Collection GBR - Everyman Barber Half Dollars (1892-1915)
For a circ set, this is about at the threshold of perfection. Every single coin in this set grades either AU58 or AU58+ and only 15 of the 73 coins could be improved. And the topper is, of those 15, every one of them has only ONE coin that is higher. Oftentimes, choice AU’s are tougher to find than Mint State pieces, and this set is really a top-notch collecting effort! We are more than proud to award a fourth consecutive Gold Star Award to this fine set.
johnk1942 (3) - Everyman Morgan Dollars (1878-1921)
Johnk1942’s set of Morgan Dollars is 100% complete and shows a set rating of 58.62. Tough to improve on! In fact, of the 97 coins in this set, a mere 27 could be improved within the constraints of the “Everyman” division of the Registry. With the singular exception of the 1893-S, every coin in this set is either AU58 or AU58+. Very well done.
Noledog Peace - Everyman Peace Dollars (1921-1935)
Noledog has a nearly perfect set of lightly circulated Peace Dollars, with 15 of the 24 no longer able to be improved. Of the remainders, precious few are around to qualify, so this super-high Everyman rating of 59.03 will likely be good enough to keep him on top. Brad’s set is close, and between the two, they have owned this category since 2012.
Best African Sets of 2019
Thush - Angola Portuguese Colony Denomination Type Set, Circulation Strikes (1921-1974)
Until 1975, Angola was once a Portuguese colony on the western coast of southern Africa. This set includes one example of every denomination issued between 1921 and 1974. The majority of the Thush Collection are either Top Pop coins or unique Top Pops. This is the third Gold award for this set.
EML Collection - Congo (Free State) Centime Copper Set, Circulation Strikes (1887-1894)
This is an interesting set comprised of large copper coins from the 1880’s and 1890’s. It’s hard to imagine that coins from Africa could have survived for over 100 years and still retain much of their original red color. EML has completed this set with a nicely-matched group of high-grade examples with a weighted GPA of 54.452.
RareRounds TopPop World’s Finest - Egypt Occupation Coinage Silver Piastres, Circulation Strikes (1916-1920)
This complete set of Egyptian Piastre coins is loaded with Top Pops. We believe this collector’s passion will drive this set’s weighted GPA (currently at 64.03) even higher next year.
RGS III (Richard G. Stevenson III) - Gambia Colonial Complete Set, Proof (1966-1970)
The owner of this set provided a perfect description: “Very low mintage proof sets were sold in velvet lined hard cases with the coins being removable presumably for the collector to examine by hand. It's amazing given these circumstances that a set with grades as high as these may be assembled.” Weighted GPA of 67.375.
Thush - Ghana Standard Coinage, Proof (1958)
This set consists of a complete Ghana Proof set from 1958. All but two of the coins are Top Pops; two are unique Top Pops, and the weighted GPA is 65.250.
Thush - Ghana Decimal Pesewa Coinage, Circulation Strikes (1965-1984)
For a nearly twenty-year period, Ghana issued a series of Pesewa denominations from ½ Pesewa to 50 Pesewas. This is an amazing set, 100% complete and with nearly each of the nineteen coins in unique Top Pop condition. Weighted GPA of 65.211.
Cannonball! - Mauritius Elizabeth II Denomination Type Set, Circulation Strikes (1953-1978)
Queen Elizabeth II is always a popular subject. Here we have a complete, seven-piece type set of all the denominations from One Cent to One Rupee issued by Mauritius under her rule. Weighted GPA of 67.143.
RGS III (Richard G. Stevenson III) - Nigeria Complete Set (British Protectorate), Circulation Strikes (1959-1962)
While still a British Protectorate, Nigeria issued a short-lived set of denominations ranging from a Halfpenny to 2 Shillings. This is a complete type set of all denominations, all Top Pops, over half of which are unique Top Pops, and the weighted GPA is an impressive 66.000.
JBW - Rhodesia Republic Complete Set, Circulation Strikes (1970-1977)
Before it became Zimbabwe, Rhodesia issued a series of coins based on a dual monetary system (British Pound and decimal Dollar). Most of the coins are very common, but the quality of this set is superb and includes a bulk of Unique Top Pop coins. The weighted GPA for this set is an impressive 65.69.
JBW - Rhodesia & Nyasaland Penny, Circulation Strikes (1955-1963)
JBW has built a small (7 coins) but impressive set of these holed African coins. The weighted GPA is a whopping 67.00 but there is still room for improvement, and we look forward to seeing what upgrades can be made to this set over next year.
Cannonball! - Seychelles Islands British Crown Colony Complete Set, Circulation Strikes (1939-1975)
This is an amazing, complete set of coins from the Seychelle Islands. The owner indicates that it took over ten years to complete the set. 68 of the 76 coins are either Top Pops or unique Top Pops. Congratulations on a stunning achievement. Weighted GPA of 64.441.
SWvdM - South African George VI 1/2 Pound & Pound, Proof (1952)
If you want a gold coin issued by South Africa under George V, there are only two choices – and both are included in this set. Both were pulled from 1952 Proof sets and they each feature the popular Springbok design on the reverse (the forerunner to the later Krugerrand design). Weighted GPA of 67.000.

Cannonball! - Southern Rhodesia Complete Set, Circulation Strikes (1934-1954)
Cannonball! has a number of sets from around the world and this is one of the most impressive. The owner self-describes the set as follows: “Try assembling a complete Circulation Strike set of coins from a country that is no longer on the map, whose coinage has long been demonetized, with silver coinage involved (with melting prevalent during silver price spikes). Oh, and toss in a jungle environment for giggles...Welcome to Southern Rhodesia, 118 coins to complete the Circulation Strike set.” Only two of the coins are below Mint State, but most are Top Pops or (better yet) unique Top Pops. Weighted GPA of 60.810.

孙克勤 Sun Keqin - People's Republic of China Commemoratives Complete Set, Circulation Strikes (1984-Present)
Between 1991 and 2000, the People’s Republic of China issued 1 Jiao, 5 Jiao and 1 Yuan coins with lovely floral designs. Until the mid-1990’s, the mintages of the Proof sets was very low – usually from 1,000 to 2,500 sets. To complete this collection, many Proof sets were broken up just to get the individual pieces, most of which are presented here as unique Top Pops.
孙克勤 Sun Keqin - People's Republic of China Commemoratives Complete Set, Proof (1984-Present)
Specimen coins of this era ere specially marked coins made primarily for sale to collectors. They are far less common than the normal commemorative coins, but not nearly as rare as Proofs. Collecting them all is a difficult endeavor. This was the first set registered in this category, the first to achieve 100% completion, and it is replete with Top Pop coins, some unique.)

This extremely popular collection of silver 1 Yuan Pandas requires 91 coins. At the top of the hill stands the DMR Collection with 100% completion and a weighted GPA of 69.495. Many of the coins are MS70’s and Top Pops, and we suspect that this set will only improve with time (it currently has a weighted GPA of 69.49).
Anilgupta - India Colonial British Denomination Regal Design Type Set (1862-1947)
This is the third Gold award for this deserving type set of British Colonial coins. Eleven competitors are participating in this category, but only Anilgupta has completed the set. We’ll keep an eye on the weighted GPA of 64.30 to check for future improvements.
RW Israel Type - Israel Pruta Denomination Type Set, Circulation Strikes (1949-1957)
Every denomination issued by Israel in its early years is contained in this 100% complete set. Every coin in this set is a Top Pop except one!
Ohtani's collection of Imperial Japanese Gold (Meiji Era) - Japanese Gold Denomination Type Set (1870-1932)
Ohtani’s set of Japanese gold types is the second best of three complete sets in this category. This is the first Gold award for this set, and we hope that this award stimulates further improvements to the weighted GPA of 64.600.
Jsalmon - Japanese Sunburst 10 Sen, Circulation Strikes (1907-1917)
The aesthetics of Japanese silver coins of this era are superb. To see a complete set in high grade is a real treat. This set has a weighted GPA of 65.23.
Hetman - Kazakhstan Silver 100 Tenge, Proof (1995-present)
Hetman has done an outstanding job of gathering all of the silver 100 Tenge commemorative coins issued by Kazakhstan, then keeping it up to date. All but one of the coins in this 100% complete set is a Top Pop, and the vast majority are unique Top Pops.
Hetman - Kazakhstan Gold 500 Tenge, Proof (2000-present)
This is a stunning set consisting of 35 gold coins that requires constant attention as new coins are released each year. The cost of completing and maintaining this set is prohibitive and we are very impressed by the owner’s dedication. 32 of the 35 coins are unique Top Pops! This is the first Gold award for this set (what took us so long?) and we suspect it is the first of many. Weighted GPA of 69.086.
Hetman - Kyrgyzstan 1 Som, Prooflike (2008-present)
All but one of the coins in this set is a Top Pop. This set contains one each of all the large, silver commemoratives issued by this former Soviet Union state.
Joao de Brito Augusto - Macau Pataca, Circulation Strikes (1952-1985)
Macau, a former Portuguese colony attached to the southern border of mainland China, began issuing coins in 1952. This collection includes all of the One Pataca coins issued by Macau from 1952 to 1985 and it includes the major varieties of 1982 and 1983.

This appears to be Yam’s second year atop the leaderboard in this category and this is the first Gold award for this set. Both competitors have kept their sets private, which may be a strategic move as they compete against each other. We may not be able to see their individual coins, but we know this is a tough, expensive set of 16 gold coins. Weighted GPA of 68.38.
Skandakumera - British Sarawak Complete Set, Circulation Strikes (1863-1941)
(Note that the award includes the 7 sub-sets in this collection which are ranked #1.) This is a large set consisting of 65 coins. Many of these coins are difficult to locate, especially in nice condition. There are some great coins in this set, including quite a few unique Top Pops. 100% complete, with a weighted GPA of 60.90.
Singapore Lunar 1 (Ronald Cohen) - Singapore Lunar $10 Silver, Proof (1981-1992)
Like many countries, Singapore issued a set of Lunar coins from 1981 to 1992, completing the 12 coin cycle (which repeats ad infinitum). This is a complete set of Proof coins with a weighted GPA of 68.857. Congratulations on your first award.

Music lovers will enjoy the design of these 1.5 Euro coins, with orchestral instruments on one side and the Vienna Philharmonic building on the other. Every one of the 11 coins in this set grades at least MS69.
CARANETT - Denmark 20 Gold Kroner, Circulation Strikes (1873-1917)
This is a complete set of the gold 20 Kroners issued by Denmark between 1873 and 1917. These are generally considered to be bullion coins, so most buyers did not concern themselves with quality. This owner has assembled as set with a weighted GPA of 65.47 and most of the coins are Top Pops. Well done! This is the fourth Gold award for this set.
Thush - Finland 50 Pennia, Circulation Strikes (1907-1917)
This is the seventh annual award for this collection of Finnish 50 Pennia. Only Thush has achieved 100% completion with a weighted GPA of 65.80. The quality of the coins in this small set is incredible, with four Top Pops and two unique Top Pops.
Geonaute - French 10 Centimes, Circulation Strikes (1914-1946)
This is a great set of the holed 10 Centimes issued by France over a thirty-two year period encompassing two World Wars and the intervening peace. The quality of this set is simply superb (and better this year with an improved, weighted GPA of 66.82) and it is 100% complete. While most of the coins are common, we can only imagine the time and effort that went into building this set.
Typetone - French Franc, Circulation Strikes (1898-1920)
This set incorporates the former Delhaye Collection into a 100% complete grouping of French 1 Francs from 1898 to 1920. Loaded with Top Pop coins, this set is 100% complete and has a weighted GPA of 66.00.
Kwayoo - French Centime, Circulation Strikes (1962-2001)
This is a very interesting set that starts out with a bunch of common coins, then becomes progressively more rare as the mintages drop from a high of over 52 million to a low of 2,500. Some years are only available in sets. The key date 1991 is here (with medallic rotation), as is every other date. This set achieved 100% completion since last year, which lowered the weighted GPA ever-so-slightly to 65.70. We expect to see even better-quality next year.
Thush - French Indo-China Colony Cent, Circulation Strikes (1885-1943)
This is a most impressive set that is not only large, but difficult to complete. This set is 100% complete with an improved, weighted GPA of 63.87. This set is full of Top Pops and a fair number of unique Top Pops. No wonder it has won its fifth Gold award.
Cape Coral Collection - German States 3 Mark Type Set, Circulation Strikes (1908-1918)
Mr. Gray’s (now the Cape Coral Collection) is the only 100% complete set in this category, with no one else coming anywhere close. Our friends have been working on this set for years and they continue to upgrade whenever possible. By the time this is posted, these remarkable coins will have been sold in the 2019 Heritage auction in a stand-alone catalog.
Cape Coral Collection - German States 3 Mark One From Each State, Proof (1908-1918)
A very impressive accomplishment of 100% completion with an improved, weighted GPA of 68.20. This set is loaded with Top Pops (some unique) and it includes an array of superb-quality Cameo and Deep Cameo Proofs.
Johnjohn10 - German 25 Pfennig Basic Set, Proof (1909-1912)
This 100% complete set includes Proof examples of every date and mintmark of the unusual 25 Pfennig denomination. The mintage figures for most of these coins remain unknown, but all are extremely rare. It would be impossible to duplicate this set in such a remarkably fine condition. 100% completion with a weighted GPA of 67.119.
Cape Coral Collection - German 3 Reichsmark Commemoratives Date Set, Circulation Strikes (1925-1932)

James K. Emery Jr. - German Third Reich 2 Reichsmark Complete Set, Circulation Strikes (1933-1939)
Talmar remains the first (and only) person to complete this set which includes all of the different date and mintmark combinations of the 2 Marks of the Nazi era. Martin Luther, Friedrich Schiller, the Potsdam Garrison Church, and Paul von Hindenburg all make appearance on these coins.
Richard G. Stevenson III - British Elizabeth II Shillings Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1953-1966)
Shillings were the workhorse coin for the British public, and they are roughly equivalent to a U.S. Quarter (but with a larger face value). This set is complete with a weighted GPA of 64.21. Over half of the coins are Top Pops and many display exceptional color.
Chris Napolitano - British Victoria Three Pence Maundy Set, Prooflike (1838-1901)
This is a complete set of the 64 Maundy Threepence pieces issued during the reign of Queen Victoria. Issued as part of a four-piece set (Penny, Twopence, Threepence, and Fourpence), these coins were given out by the Queen each year in a special ceremony on Maundy Thursday in lieu of the traditional foot washing. Maundy money is extremely popular with collectors and putting together a set in top condition is quite an accomplishment.

This is the better of two sets of Irish Sixpence that Eoin has posted on the PCGS Set Registry. Both are high quality, but this one is 100% complete and the average grade is better than MS64.
John E Blake - Irish Shilling Date Set, Circulation Strikes (1928-1968)
This set is a load of bull. No, really, every coin features a bull on the reverse. This set has room for improvement as far as some of the grades are concerned, but we’re impressed by the fact that it is 100% complete and that it contains the very rare 1937 Shilling. For future reference, the weighted GPA is 62.61.
CARANETT - Netherlands 10 Gulden, Circulation Strikes (1875-1889)
Caranett has several award-winning sets of world gold coins. This set is also top-notch, 100% complete, and full of Top Pop coins (in fact, only two coins are not a Top Pop, and another is a unique Top Pop).
Jorge Tierno - Spain 20 Pesetas, Circulation Strikes (1887-1904)
This small set of nine gold coins contains some great, low-mintage rarities, and the owner has collected them all. This is the only complete set in the category, and it has a weighted GPA this year of 60.765 (up from 60.53 last year). This set has won an award each year since 2010.

This appears to be a new entry in this category and this set shot to Number 1 immediately, beating out the long-time winner WJG with a slightly higher GPA. It’s going to be hard to match the weighted GPA of 65.29 for this set, but we suspect that there will be at least one rival for the throne.
Tryzub - Ukraine Commemoratives Complete Set Standard Coinage (1995-1996)

The denominations of the coins in this set range from 200,000 to 2 Million Karbovantsivs. Sounds impressive, but the Karbovantsis was replaced by the Hyrvyni in 1996 at a rate of 100,000 to 1. The coins themselves are lovely, hard to find, and the fact that this set is 100% complete is a testament to the owner’s persistence.

This set reflect jhd2000’s diverse collecting tastes. Here, the owner chose flamingoes, then went out and completed the set-in exceptional quality. Most of the coins in this 26-piece set are Top Pops or unique Top Pops.
Cannonball! - British Honduras Complete Set, Circulation Strikes (1885-1973)
According to Cannonball!, who has built some exceptional collections cited here, “[This was] the hardest set of coins I've tried to assemble thus far; some coins simply ARE NOT OUT THERE IN ANY GRADE.” What is impressive is that this is a big set of 127 coins and that most of the coins are unique Top Pops! There are a few circulated coins in this set, plus two details coins and, if they were upgrade, this set’s weighted GPA of 53.228 will jump dramatically. We can’t wait to see what this set looks like next year.
Uncommon Cents - Canadian Large Cents with Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1858-1920)
Congratulations to a new leader in this category. Uncommon Cents takes over from the long-standing leader, the Willamette Collection, not only in terms of completeness (100%) but condition, as well (weighted GPA of 60.25). This is a set of Canadian Large Cents that is tough enough to collect and complete, but the addition of rare varieties makes it nigh impossible. This is an amazing accomplishment.
Lantern Collection - Canadian Elizabeth II Cents Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1953-2012)
There are only two complete sets competing for top position in this category. Lantern has led for five years but exceeds the next best set by less than a single GPA point (68.03 compared to 67.76). With 68 coins required for this set, it is difficult to assemble in top condition.
Romaldkirk Collection - Canadian Elizabeth II Cents with Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1953-2012)
For years, the Lantern Collection dominated this category, but now the Romaldkirk Collection is the undisputed leader. It will be interesting to see if Lantern takes up the challenge, as he/she is only one coin short of completion. Stay tuned for next year’s competition.
The Canadian Beaver Hunter - Canadian Nickel Five Cents with Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1922 to date)
This set includes all of the Nickel Five-Cent pieces issued by Canada from 1922 to date, including all of the major varieties. This set is loaded with Top Pop coins, many of which are Unique Top Pops. We’re always impressed when a new entrant into a category jumps to the number one position, especially a set that requires 120 coins.
The Great Silver Maple Leafs - Canadian Silver One Ounce Maple Leaf (1988 to date)
This is the first award (of any color) for this complete set of 32 one-ounce silver Maple Leafs. With a weighted GPA of 67.76, this one is going to be hard to match or beat.
Gene Blair - Canadian Silver Commemorative Fifty Cents, Proof (1995 to date)
This is a visually impressive set of 84 coins, all of which are silver commemorative Half Dollars issued by Canada. A wide range of topics are covered here: animals; sports; events; and locations. All of the coins, except one, are PR69 or better and the vast majority of the coins are Deep Cameos.
Perth Collection - Newfoundland Complete Set, Circulation Strikes (1865-1947)

This is another of those mega-sets which, in this case, requires 139 coins to be complete, including every date in every denomination from the Cent to the $2 gold piece. This is the fourth Gold award for this collection, which remains #1 in the category. It is now 100% complete with a weighted GPA of 64.59 (a very slight improvement over last year’s GPA).
Fernando Baez Guerrero (1) - Cuban Complete First Republic Set with Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1915-1961)
Guerrero’s set is number 2 in this category, but he is a close competitor to the current leader. 100% complete, with a weighted GPA of 62.70. It will be interesting to see if Guerrero can improve over the coming year.
Fernando Baez Guerrero Complete (A) - Dominican Republic Complete Set, Circulation Strikes (1937-Present)
This is a great yeoman effort at attempting this oversized set that covers the complete Dominican Republic coinage in all dates and denominations from 1937 to date. Many of the coins in this set are unique Top Pops. This year, the completion level improved to 99.01%; the weighted GPA rose to 65.46. Great effort!
Fernando A. Baez Guerrero - Dominican Republic Complete Set, Proof (1937-2003)
This huge set contains 138 coins. Loaded with unique Top Pops, this set reflects the same attention to detail that FABG lavishes on all his/her sets. There are many low mintage coins in this set, including a couple with mintages of only 35 Proofs.
Fernando Baez Guerrero - Haitian Silver 100 Gourdes, Proof (1977-1981)
This is a small 7-coin set or large silver coins that is 100% complete. This is the first Gold award for this set, after it earned awards in the previous three years.
John Schuldt - Mexican Ferdinand VII (Draped Bust) 8 Reales, Circulation Strikes (1811-1821)
This classic, Mexican set includes 8 Reales issued under the reign of Ferdinand VII. Amazingly, this set is 100% complete and the lowest grade is XF40 (the 1814/3 overdate, of course). What a great set. For tracking purposes, the weighted GPA for this year is 54.10.
Charles A McVey - Mexican Silver Peso Date Set, Circulation Strikes (1866-1945)
As the counterpart of the U.S. Dollar, the Mexican Silver Peso of the late 1800’s was (and is) a popular collectible. Charlie’s set entered the arena with forty out of the required forty-one coins and two years ago the set was finally completed. The weighted GPA now stands at 59.13.
Libertycoin - Mexican Gold 50 Pesos with Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1921-1947)

These large, heavy gold coins have always made an impressive collection. Here they are in all their bright glory. 100% complete, with a weighted GPA of 65.40 (up slightly from last year). Most of the later dates are Top Pops and the 1930 is a unique Top Pop. Good job.
Eric Brown - Mexican Onza Silver, Circulation Strikes (1982-present)
Considered a bullion coin, but prized by collectors, the Silver Onza features a winged, half-clad Liberty striding toward the viewer. A new coin is added every year, yielding a current requirement of 37 coins to complete the set. This is one of two complete sets in this category and the weighted GPA’s of the two sets are extremely close, making us wonder what next year will look like.

This set of six coins wind a Gold award because it is 100% complete and the weighted GPA is an astounding 68.83.
Antonio Domínguez - Panama 500 Gold Balboas, Proof (1975-1985)
This is a collection of 11 stunning coins, all DCAM’s and all PR69 or better. The DCAM rating pushes the weighted GPA of this set to an amazing 70.46.

This is another tremendous Timbertop effort. The early dates in the Shilling series are tough, tough, tough in high grade, yet here they all are in wonderful Mint State condition. The number of unique Top Pops in this set is dizzying. 100% completion with a weighted GPA of 65.46 (up from 65.40 last year) and the undisputed champion of the category.
Timbertop - Australian Florin Complete Set with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1910-1963)

In true Timbertop fashion, this set boasts a 100% completion rate, which is rather impressive for a 56-coin set. The quality is superb, too, with the average grade in excess of MS65. There is some close competition in terms of completion, but no one comes close in terms of quality.
CB Gold Collection - Australian Complete Sovereign Set with Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1855-1931)
Who attempts a set of 194 gold coins, each containing nearly a quarter of an ounce of gold? When we wrote the generic description for the set several years ago, we noted that no one had achieved a 90% completion level. Now the CB Gold Collection boasts a 95.36% completion level with a weighted GPA of 62.16 (up from 61.89 last year).
emu666 - Australian Twenty Cent Commemoratives, Circulation Strikes (1995-Present)
This is the sixth annual and the third gold award for this modern set of circulating 20 Cent commemoratives. For two years, the owner of this set has been able to fend off a very close competitor. We’ll see if the king can keep his throne for the next year.
Andrew Sharpe - Australian Fifty Cents Commemoratives, Circulation Strikes (1966-Present)
The BCM Collection leapfrogged to the top of this category, beating out two Gold award-winning sets that were vying for top position. When 165 coins are required, this is quite an accomplishment. However, the winning margin is very slim, and we expect fireworks as the participants fight it out for the top spot again this year.
Ridgeline-coins - Australian Kookaburra Silver Dollars, Circulation Strikes (1992-present)
The Kookaburra is a one-ounce silver coin created for sale to collectors. Each coin has a different view of the iconic Australian bird. This set is comprised of the Proof versions of this coin. There are several sets in this category that are 100% complete, but this owner holds a slight advantage. Keep up the good work!
Ravenswood (Gary R. Lea) - Cook Island Famous Navy Battles $1 Silver, Proof (2010-2011)
This is a small set of only five coins, but each depicts a famous naval battle from history. With a weighted GPA of 69.400, this set will be difficult to beat or improve.
Cannonball! - Fiji Complete Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1934-1968)
This monster set of 89 coins is very difficult to complete, especially in top condition. In fact, the owner states in his description of this set that it took him 15 years to complete it in Mint State. We love hearing stories like that because it illustrates the devotion, time, and money that it takes to build a world-class set. Great job!
Cannonball! - New Guinea Complete Set, Circulation Strikes (1929-1945)
Here comes Cannonball! with another great set, this one described by the owner as “This set consists of "just" 11 coins, but it is hard as Chinese math to acquire NICE examples.” We expect to see some movement in this set over the coming year, so we’re recording the weighted GPA of 65.340 for reference.
Aurum - New Zealand 1/2 Pennies Complete Set, Circulation Strikes (1940-1965)
Aurum stays atop the leaderboard this year against at least one other collector who has a 100% complete set (the third appears to have retired from the competition). 100% complete, with a weighted GPA of 67.09.

The 27 coins in this set are all large, copper pieces that are hard to find in Gem condition and with full red color. The owner of this set has done a masterful job of obtaining every one of the necessary coins in full Red (except for one RB). The set even includes several Top Pops and one unique Top Pop.
James Heegeman - New Zealand Threepence Complete Set, Circulation Strikes (1933-1965)
This 100% complete set has been a long-time in the making (see the owner’s notes about where each coin was acquired). There are some very special coins in this set, including several unique Top Pops.
Sixmillion (2) - Niue Marvel Avengers $2, Proof (2015)
If you like the Marvel Avengers (who doesn’t?), this set features five of them, all “good guys” except for the evil Ultron. This set is 100% complete, it has a weighted GPA of 69.000, and all coins except one are unique Top Pops.
BonEZ.Skulls.First - Palau Complete Skull Set (2016-present)
Wow, this is one of the most interesting and macabre sets we’ve come across. These are not your Mom’s coins – each was formed in the shape of a skull (we can’t imagine these circulating as legal tender). This set contains coins made of gold and silver, it is 100% complete, and the weighted GPA is a perfect 70.000. Another surprise is the large certified populations of each of these coins, indicating their popularity with collectors.
StarEagle Cub Wildlife Series - Tuvalu Big Cat Cubs Wildlife Series Silver 50C, Proof (2016)
Some coins just tug at your heart. The designs on the six coins in this set feature big cat cubs that have been colorized to really make them stand out. Each coin in this set is a perfect PR70DCAM.
Cannonball! - Tuvalu Complete Set, Circulation Strikes (1976-1994)
In typical Cannonball! fashion, this is a complete set of the 28 required coins and every example, with the exception of one, is a unique Top Pop! Each coin features Queen Elizabeth II on one side and a Tuvalu-related fauna on the other. Weighted GPA of 66.643.
Energize 1.0 Tuvalu - Tuvalu Star Trek Series, Proof (2015)
Lovers of the classic Star Trek TV series and all its related spin-offs will appreciate this collection of silver Dollars from Tuvalu. 100% complete, with a weighted GPA of an amazing 69.46.
Best Multi-Country Sets of 2019
CARANETT - British Commonwealth Sovereign Edward VII Complete Set, Circulation Strikes (1902-1910)
This is the tenth consecutive award and the fourth Gold award for this set, and each one of those awards was well-deserved. Think about it – 38 gold sovereigns from the British Empire under Edward VII, including coins from Canada, Great Britain, and Australia. Though there are three complete sets in this category, Caranett has been able to maintain a slim lead over the competitors. It helps to have a couple unique Top Pops.
Cavilier Victoria Gold - British Commonwealth Sovereign Victoria (Veiled Head) Complete Set, Circulation Strikes (1893-1901)
The Veiled Head refers to a more mature depiction of Queen Victoria later in her life and rule. There are no rarities or “stoppers” in this set, but it is expensive to build, and the coins are hard to find in top condition because they were widely used in commerce. This is the first Gold award for this deserving set. Weighted GPA of 63.53.
Brandywine Collection - Coin of the Year by Krause Publications (1982-present)
This is a fun set of highly-regarded coins, each of them recognized as the Coin of The Year by Krause Publications. Though not complete (92.45%), this set is so far ahead of the competition that it deserves special recognition. The owner has done a tremendous job in displaying this set on the Registry – it’s worth a look!
Pasadena Collection - World Coins Manufactured by Mints of the United States
Who knew that the United States Mints produced coins for 41 foreign countries? Pasadena did and the owner has made it his/her goal to acquire as many of them as possible. This set is only 79.82% complete, but it is such an educational tool, that we felt compelled to honor it. We note that it has been recently updated, so we expect to see some improvements in the coming year. Weighted GPA of 59.87.
The Layb Collection - Euro Complete Set, Circulation Strikes (2000)
Since 2007, this set has won an award each year, including its second Gold award this year. This set includes a variety of different Euro denominations from several countries in the European Union. 100% complete, with a weighted GPA of 65.73.
Best Digital Album of 2019
AD4400 - Buffalo Nickels Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1913-1938)
Although this set was not ranked number one within its category, the time and effort the owner has spent on capturing the beautiful toning of this set has earned AD4400 the gold award for the Best Digital Album of 2019. Best New Sets of 2019
BLUE OCEAN - Lincoln Cents Basic Set, Proof (1950-1958)
It’s hard to believe, but Blue Ocean’s new set has topped the Hall of Fame and Platinum set of Stewart Blay, who has won every year since the start of the Registry. Blue Ocean’s set rating of 71.60 has beaten Stewart by .2 points, and now takes home the Gold for 2019. Congrats.
Themetallurgist - Lincoln Cents Toned Basic Set, Mirror Proof (1936-present)
If you are a fan of color, be sure to check out the entries in this category and the photos of this set. themetallurgist has really found some incredibly toned Proof Lincolns and now occupies the top spot in the Registry for these coins. Our kudos on the first Gold Star award.
Gerald R. Forsythe - Liberty Nickels with 1913, Proof (1883-1913)
Any set containing a 1913 Liberty Nickel is worthy of an award, and new this year is Gerald Forsythe’s incredible set of Proof Liberty Nickels. And yes, there is more to it than simply including the 1913. The overall quality is superb, with over half the coins at the top of the PCGS pop report. The set rating of 68.79 pretty much speaks for itself and all but seven of the 32 coins are either CAM or DCAM examples. Great new addition to the Registry!
RSD - Barber Dimes, Proof (1892-1915)
Another incredible addition to the Registry for 2019 is RSD’s superb set of Proof Barber Dimes. With a set rating of 68.98, there is obviously not a lot of room for improvement here. It’s really great that after almost 20 years, new sets of this quality are still being added to the Registry.
Tom Bender - Carson City Gold $5 Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1870-1893)
No other mints offer the romance and history of the famous Carson City, Nevada (CC) mint. Tom has completed a set of “CC” Half Eagles, and has even topped the great Harry Bass’s collection of these for quality. As with most Liberty Gold, the set rating of 60.06, while it may not look impressive at first glance, most certainly is as high-grade Mint State “CC” gold really doesn’t exist prior to 1890. We congratulate Tom on his first Gold Star for this very tough set.
J Satterlee's Silver Eagles (John Satterlee) - Silver Eagles Complete Set, Circulation Strikes and Proof (1986-present)
The American Silver Eagle was first minted in 1986, the same year of PCGS’s founding. Every year since, the U.S. Mint has produced Mint State and Proof Versions of this extremely popular coin series. This set includes the still hard-to-find 1995-W Proof Silver Eagle, in this case, one of only 194 that PCGS has graded PR70DCAM.
Ponderosa Gold and Silver - Silver & Gold Eagles Complete Set, Proof (1986-present)
With the exception of a hand full of Reverse Proof coins, every coin within this set is graded PR70DCAM, this set has an overall Set Rating of 71.00 with all coins being the highest graded.
JNJSJB - 2009-Present Mint Set
The 2009-Present Mint Set now has over 300 coins and is updated each year as the U.S. Mint releases new coins. JNJSJB has an overall Set Rating of 67.89 and includes every coin required for this composite.
D.L. Hansen Collection - 1885 Proof Set with Trade Dollar
Here is yet another new set this year with a mega-rarity. Mr. Hansen now owns the PR65+ CAM example of the extraordinarily rare 1885 Trade Dollar (ex-Atwater, Eliasberg and finest known) thereby propelling him to the top of the Registry for this tough set. Like Mr. Forsythe’s Liberty Nickel set, the other coins in the set are also superb and the set rating of 68.63 underscores the overall quality.
Jason's Walking Culls - Walking Liberty Half Dollars, Low Ball (1916-1947)
After four consecutive Gold Star awards, the Chesapeake Collection of Lowball Walkers was edged out this year by Jason’s new set. Not by much… Jason’s GPA Weighted score of 68.72 is a mere .03 points better than Chesapeake’s, but good enough for a Gold Star this year. Congrats.
RickFortin’s Lowball Morgans - Morgan Dollars with Major Varieties, Low Ball (1878-1921)
A silver dollar in the late 19th century was the equivalent of a $20 bill today, so it was quite a useful coin. They got heavy use, particularly out West, where trust in the banking system was marginal at best. Rick Fortin has put together an impressive set of heavily used Morgans with an average grade of 1.83. Over half of the coins in this set cannot be improved (lowered) and we’re very pleased to see this addition to the Registry this year.
Jmdeyts - French 5 Francs, Circulation Strikes (1970-2001)
With 33 coins from the modern era in this set, it is a challenge to complete the set, then obtain the coins in top condition. This is the fourth year of recognition for this set and the first Gold award.
Johnjohn10 - German 25 Pfennig Basic Set, Proof (1909-1912)
This complete set of 21 coins has a GPA of 67.17 and is the second all-time finest set on the PCGS Set Registry, only outranked by the retired CoinKing set.
Deepblue Collection - British Decimal Coinage Complete Type Set, Circulation Strikes (1971-present)
This complete set has a weighted GPA of 67.79 which is quite an accomplishment in anyone’s book. DeepBlue has chosen to keep the set private (one of the options the Set Registry provides) but the Set Composition reveals the 48 coins required for this set. Weighted GPA of 67.79, which indicates that many of the coins are Top Pops (and probably unique Top Pops).
Cannonball! - British Honduras Cents, Circulation Strikes (1885-1973)
Once again, Cannonball! blows us away with an impressive set of 42 coins from the British Honduras. The weighted GPA is “only” 62.895 due to some circulated coins, but Cannonball! promises, “There will be upgrades.” We can’t wait to see them.
Oldsmagnet - Australian Koala Silver Dollars (1 oz) Complete Set (2007-present)
If you like Koalas, you will love this set. The Koala Dollars are Australia’s answer to the American Silver Eagles, the China Pandas, the Canadian Silver Maples, and other popular one-ounce silver coins. This set is a mixture of Specimens, Mint State examples, and Proofs, many in Top Pop condition. The set is 100% complete and has a weighted GPA of 69.05. New coins are required each year as they are issued and Oldsmagnet has done an excellent job of keeping up.
