Expert Comments:
As PCGS operations expands across the globe, so does the PCGS Set Registry. For our fifteenth award season we are awarding more world coin sets than ever before with highest honors. It’s been very exciting watching the world coin registry grow and out of that, being blown away by some beautiful and interesting sets. And, I would be remiss not to mention the great U.S. sets that are registered, some continuing to dominate, and new ones seeming to appear out of nowhere! It has been an honor and a privilege to review your sets every year. Whether or not you were selected to be in the top tier this year, all of you are winners and we say, THANK YOU.

Best Classic Sets of 2016
High Desert - Complete U.S. Type Set, Circulation Strikes (1792-1964)
(Note that the award includes the 4 sub-sets in this collection which are ranked #1.) A complete 133-piece U.S. Type set with an average grade of 65.395! This of course includes the Chain Cent, 1792 Half Disme, 1796 Quarter, 1796-97 Half Dollar, 1796 No Stars $2.50, Capped Bust $5 (small size) and a host of other extremely tough type coins. While quite a few Set Registry categories are quite competitive, the High Desert Set utterly dominates this area, with the runner-up’s set rating trailing by about 10 points! It is, quite simply, the finest U.S. Type Set ever put together. Easily one of the most impressive sets on the entire Registry.
Gobrecht's Raisinet Collection - Complete U.S. Coin Design Set No Gold (1792-present)
In 2008, this collector won gold as a Best New Set. This year he receives his fourth gold for a set that is beautifully exhibited. The owner, who is clearly passionate about his collection, offers highly educational comments about most of the coins in the set. In addition, nearly all of the coins are imaged either with the collector’s own pictures or PCGS TrueView. Take a peek. You’ll spend some quality time browsing through the 58 coins in this set. It’s a pleasure to see a fine set such as this presented so professionally.
Simpson – Barber Series Complete Set, Proof (1892-1915)
Simpson’s complete set of Proof Barber coinage vaulted to the top of this category in its debut last year. It’s back this year and that’s no surprise, as his set rating is an unearthly 68.925. Twenty-eight are un-improvable, and nearly all grade PR67 or higher. Spectacular original toning abounds, and we again urge you to check out the photos on the registry website.

Subway Tokens - Commemoratives Complete Set, Circulation Strikes and Proof (1892-present)
(Note that the award includes the 3 sub-sets in this collection which are ranked #1.) We’re all familiar with the traditional 50 and 144-piece sets of U.S. commemoratives from 1892 to 1954, but here is a massive 414-piece set encompassing every U.S. commemorative issued to the present day! Lacking only the Octagonal Pan Pac $50, the balance of the set is simply superb, with a weighted GPA of 68.75. Including over 300 “finest knowns,” this is an outstanding achievement, and leads the second place set by more than two and a half grade points. This is Subway Tokens’ third gold for this incredible set.
High Desert - U.S. Half Cents & Cents Complete Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1793-present)
Starting with a 1796 Half Cent in MS65+RB and an MS-69 Wreath Cent, and including an 1877 Indian Cent in MS-66RD, this set can only be described as phenomenal. With a set rating of 66.77 it is not only the current finest set, but the finest all-time set, eclipsing ESM’s Hall of Fame set from previous years by almost two points. Of the 253 Lincoln cents, over 200 are graded MS67RD or better. Jaw-dropping quality and well deserving of a third gold!
KCV c-s w/MV Cir. - U.S. Nickels Complete Set with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1866-present)
(Note that the award includes the 2 sub-sets in this collection which are ranked #1.) After winning three Blue Awards over the past three years, KCV finally “gets the Gold” this year for this outstanding 326 piece set. It is 100% complete and carries a set rating of 65.66. A few of the highlights include an 1884 in MS-66+, a 1904, also in MS66+, and a 1935-D in MS-67. Well done.
Monte Weiner the BigMo Collection - Civil War Set with Gold (1861-1865)
The Civil War was a most traumatic time for our nation, and with the Southern mints in transition during 1861, a fascinating period for coin collectors. BigMo has managed to assemble all 111 coins in this historic set (including gold!) and has achieved a set rating of 61.283. A few of the numerous highlights include one of the finest known 1861-D Half Eagles, the finest known 1862-S silver set, a Proof 65 1862 Eagle, and Proof 65+ 1862 Double Eagle. Eleven coins are absolute finest knowns. A Gold Star winner last year, it is more than deserving of a second this year.
ESM - Half Cents with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1793-1857)
(Note that the award includes the 1 sub-set in this collection which is ranked #1.) ESM’s Half Cent collection is 100% complete, (including the 1796 No Pole, 1797 Gripped Edge and the 1802/0, Rev of 1800) and is one of only three sets to ever achieve completion. The 1793 is a choice MS63BN example, and the tough 1796 With Pole is a choice AU55. Our congratulations on another well-deserved third Gold!
Jim McGuigan - Half Cents Die Variety Set by Cohen, Circulation Strikes (1793-1857)
We welcomed longtime Half Cent collector Jim McGuigan to the Gold Star club last year with his outstanding set of Half Cents by Cohen number. With a daunting 99 coins in the set, Jim has managed to complete 98% of the set in a grade of 53 or better. Just his 1793s include a 64, a two 65’s and a 66! Both of his 1796s are mint state. There are some tough varieties here, including the 1797 Gripped Edge and the 1802, Rev. 1800. In all we congratulate Jim on an outstanding achievement and a repeat Gold award.
High Desert - Large Cents with Major Varieties (With the four Ultra Rarities), Circulation Strikes (1793-1857)
(Note that the award includes the 2 sub-sets in this collection which are ranked #1.) American Numismatics was born with Large Cent collecting, and High Desert’s set currently sits atop the Set Registry by nearly five points. It is 100% complete including the Strawberry Leaf Wreath Cent, the 1795 Reeded Edge, and the two 1795 Jefferson Heads! And given that these ultra rarites only come in low grade, this set still manages an overall rating of 56.59! A very tough set and quite an accomplishment. We are pleased to award a second Gold Star.
ESM - Large Cents with Major Varieties (With the four Ultra Rarities), Circulation Strikes and Proof (1793-1857)
(Note that the award includes the 2 sub-sets in this collection which are ranked #1.) While a complete collection of Large Cents in MS and Proof would be a major undertaking, when it includes the 1793 Strawberry Leaf Wreath Cent, the 1794 Starred Reverse, the 1795 Reeded Edge and both 1795 Jefferson Head Cents, all you can say is “wow.” It is now 100% complete, including the incredibly difficult Coronet Cent proofs. With pedigrees from the Norweb, Eliasberg, Parmelee and Garrett collections, it doesn’t get much better than this. A well deserved fifth Gold Star Award.
ESM - Large Cents with Major Varieties, Proof (1817-1857)
(Note that the award includes the 1 sub-set in this collection which is ranked #1.) All Proof coins prior to 1858 are tough, and the issues from the 1820s and 1830s are all extreme rarities with PCGS pops in the low single digits. Completing this set is a significant accomplishment and judging by the population data, one that will not be soon duplicated. With a set rating of 66.69, we are in awe of this collecting tour-de-force and proudly award his third Gold Star Award.

The Foreside Collection - Flying Eagle Cents with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes and Proof (1856-1858)
(Note that the award includes the 1 sub-set in this collection which is ranked #1.) This may be a small set (only 5 mint state and 4 proof coins), but it is a glorious one nonetheless. With a weighted GPA of 66.00 it currently sits atop the Registry. This collector has an eye for quality, in fact his 1857 MS66 and 1858 Large Letters MS67 are Top Pops and his 1858 Large Letters PR66+CA is the single finest graded. We congratulate this collector on his second Gold Star award-winning effort.

ESM - Indian Cents with Major Varieties, Proof (1859-1909)
(Note that the award includes the 1 sub-set in this collection which is ranked #1.) With an astonishing set rating of 69.58, it’s almost impossible to imagine a finer set. Over half the coins in this set are unimprovable and over three quarters of the coins are Cameos or Deep Cameos. After having won six Blue and one Gold over the past seven years, we again award a Gold Star Award for this outstanding accomplishment.

AU_Hobby - Lincoln Cents Complete Variety Set, Circulation Strikes and Proof (1909-Present)
This set is far more difficult than might appear at first glance. While it is “only” Lincoln Cents, it includes all varieties, and comprises an astonishing 550 different coins. Many dozens of doubled dies and repunched mintmarks require patience and lots of searching on the part of the collector attempting it. AUHobby has managed to complete almost 97% of this massive set, with a current Weighted GPA of just over MS-65. After a Blue Star in 2014, we are happy to award his first Gold Star award for 2016.
The Lone Star Collection - Lincoln Cents Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1909-1958)
Most of us got our start collecting the basic date and mintmark set of Lincoln Cents. But few have done it at a level approaching perfection. The Lone Star Collection boasts not only 100% completion, but a Set Rating of 69.57 and a mind-blowing 97.86% Red! More than half the coins in the set sit atop the PCGS population, and cannot be improved. Like Morgan Dollars, Lincoln Cents are among the most competitive sets in the Registry, and there are four or five sets close behind. But for now, the current champion is the Lone Star Collection, and we a please to award the first Gold Star Award to this incredible set.
Simpson - Shield Two Cents Basic Set, Circulation Strikes and Proof (1864-1873)
Near the threshold of perfection, Simpson’s set of Two Cent Pieces in MS and Proof is a wonder to behold. Boasting a set rating of a mind-boggling 68.34, nearly half the set consists of finest knowns and every coin in the set is either full red, or a cameo. This was a new set last year, and has easily earned a second Gold Star Award.

Dan Cent - Shield Two Cents with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1864-1872)
Though it includes only a dozen coins, Dan Cent has assembled an extraordinary set with a rating of 67.883 and a Red percentage of 100%. Fully half of the coins are finest knowns (or tied for that honor) and after being awarded a Blue Star last year, we are please to promote this set to Gold this year.
TDP (tompet38) - Three Cent Nickels with Major Varieties, Proof (1865-1889)
(Note that the award includes the 5 sub-sets in this collection which are ranked #1.) Tompet’s Three Cent Nickel set is head and shoulders above any previous effort, earning a set rating of 68.516, some six points above his nearest challenger. Almost 60% of the coins are finest knowns, and among the Proofs, nearly all are Cameo or Deep Cameo. It’s safe to say that this set will not be eclipsed for some time to come. Our congratulations on a first Gold Star Award.
The Greenbrier River Collection - Shield Nickels with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes and Proof (1866-1883)
(Note that the award includes the 1 sub-set in this collection which is ranked #1.) A Blue Star award winner in 2013 and a Gold Star winner in 2014 and 2015, we proudly add a third Gold Star this year. Containing twenty “finest knowns” it is the best Shield Nickel set ever assembled, and nearly eight points ahead of the runner-up. We are blown away by this one.
Richard Groman - Liberty Nickels Basic Set, Proof (1883-1912)
With a jaw dropping set rating of 68.84, this set truly borders on perfection. This marks his 14th year in the top spot in the category. We’re proud to award him his sixth Gold Star. Congratulations Richard for both your fine set and your longstanding support of the Registry.
The Gately Collection - Buffalo Nickels with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1913-1938)
(Note that the award includes the 1 sub-set in this collection which is ranked #1.) Boasting a set rating of 66.662, the Gately Collection of Buffalo Nickels is a most impressive accomplishment, featuring the finest known 1917-D, 1927-S, 1928-D and 1936-D 3 1/2 Legs and, oh, did we mention the finest known 1918/17-D as well? More impressive, might even be the fact that 38 of the 71 coins sit at the top of the population, which for a series such as Buffalo nickels is no mean feat. This set continues to improve each year. Our congratulations on a fifth Gold Star, and ninth consecutive win in the category. Needless to say, this set is 100% complete.
KDM - Capped Bust Half Dimes Die Variety Set by Logan-McCloskey, Circulation Strikes (1829-1837)
A past winner for the past five years KDM’s set continues to lead the category. With no fewer than 123 different coins, this set is made up of exquisitely toned and original pieces. With many of the coins in Choice AU this set has the look and feel that many aspire to. Sets such as this require a tremendous amount of patience, knowledge and searching, and we congratulate KDM on a well-earned third Gold Star.

Link's (The Early American Silver Classic Set of Capped Bust Dimes) - Capped Bust Dimes Classic Set, Circulation Strikes (1809-1837)
(Note that the award includes the 1 sub-set in this collection which is ranked #1.) A first time Gold Star winner this year, the Early American Set has certainly earned its award with a set rating of 65.93! Fully 40% of the coins sit atop the PCGS Population Report and many exhibit exquisite original toning. Welcome to the club!
Easton Collection - Capped Bust Dimes with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1809-1837)
Achieving 100% completeness with an average grade of 61.495 while only adding original beautifully toned coins is quite the accomplishment for a set dated 1809 – 1837! This set is ranked #1 and includes several finest known coins. It is the all-time finest (by a wide margin) even though the owner selects only those coins that fulfilled his criteria of originality and eye appeal. This set was a Gold Star winner in both 2014 and 2015 and is more than deserving of a third Gold. Keep up the effort.

Varieties Incorporated - Barber Dimes with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1892-1916)
This is a highly competitive category, and with the “retirement” of the Simpson collection to Platinum in 2014, Varieties Incorporated took the top spot last year. With a set rating just over 67, this 100% complete set takes home its second Gold Star award.
Gerald Forsythe - Mercury Dimes FB with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1916-1945)
(Note that the award includes the 2 sub-sets in this collection which are ranked #1.) After having conquered Buffalo Nickels, Gerald has moved on to Mercury Dimes, and what an effort! Including varieties, the set is 100% complete and all sport Full Bands. This yields an astounding set rating of 69.66. If that’s not enough, look at it this way: Of the 80 coins in the set, 47 have a pop higher of zero! And these include the 16-D and the 21-D! A finer set would be difficult to imagine, much less put together. A well-deserved 4th Gold Star award for this set.
Link's (The Early American Silver Capped Bust Quarter Variety Set) - Capped Bust Quarters with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1815-1838)
(Note that the award includes the 1 sub-set in this collection which is ranked #1.) This is an incredible set made of up many pop 1, finest known coins including the very scarce 1823/2 overdate. Over half of the coins sit on top of the Pop Report. This set is a second year winner and has quickly eclipsed Eliasberg, Garrett, Norweb and other famous collections by a good margin.

Simpson - Liberty Seated Quarters, Proof (1858-1891)
Simpson’s sets never fail to amaze, and this Proof Set of Liberty Seated Quarters underscore that point. The Set rating is a mere 68.326(!) and of the 35 coins, just about half sit at the top of the Population charts. Simply astonishing quality that will be nearly impossible to beat. A well-deserved 2nd Gold Star Award.

Perfection 6A - Barber Quarters Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1892-1916)
(Note that the award includes the 1 sub-set in this collection which is ranked #1.) Perfection’s Barber Quarter set was completed this year with the acquisition of the 1894-S (in MS-67 we might add!) The set rating now stands at 67.51 with over half the coins at the top of the Pop chart. This set currently dominates the category by 4 1/2 points. A first time Gold Star winner last year, it now more than ever deserves its Gold Award for 2016. Outstanding.
Simpson - Barber Quarters, Proof (1892-1915)
Like his Proof Seated Quarters, Simpson’s Barber Quarters simply amaze. Here now is a set with a rating of an unimaginable 69.91, with almost 2/3 of the set at the top of the Pop charts and nearly all of those, alone in their position as absolute finest knowns. Simpson generously shares his sets with superb quality photos, so take a moment to see that has been accomplished. You won’t find better.

The Ohio Collector - Standing Liberty FH Quarters Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1916-1930)
With a set rating of 68.19 in a tough and beautifully-designed series, 97% (all but one) of the coins sport full heads and a third of the coins are top pops with none higher. Two thirds of the coins grade MS67FH or better and we offer our congratulations on a fourth Gold Star award.
Link's (The Early American Silver Complete Variety Set of Lettered and Reeded Edge Capped Half Dollars) - Capped Bust Half Dollars Complete Variety Set, Circulation Strikes (1807-1839)
This set receives our highest honor this year with its induction into the PCGS Set Registry Hall of Fame. With a daunting 610 coins needed for completion this set this set achieves an incredible 100% completeness with an amazing grade average of 64.264! The set includes both die states of the very rare 1817/4 including the finest known example. The commitment needed to assemble a set of this magnitude is very impressive and serves as an example of one of the most difficult challenges in U.S. Coin collections. Chuck is a true CBH nut! His passion and commitment are amazing and his willingness to share with outstanding photos is likewise commendable. This is a World Class set in every sense of the word, and a second Gold Star award almost seems inadequate to express our thanks and admiration for this incredible collecting achievement.
ChrisMor - Liberty Seated Half Dollars Complete Variety Set, Proof (1858-1891)
(Note that the award includes the 2 sub-sets in this collection which are ranked #1.) A new winner last year, this set is 100% complete with a GPA of 67.49. Fifteen of the 36-coin set are the finest known or tied for finest known. Not only that but all of the coins are beautifully toned with tremendous eye appeal. Our sincere congratulations on a second Gold Star Award!
tradedollarnut - Early Dollars Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1794-1803)
Bruce’s set starts off with the incredible SP66 1794 $1, the current record holder for the most valuable U.S. coin. It continues with a total of 8 out of the 12 coins ranked as finest known (4) or tied for the finest known (4). The set boasts an incredible average grade of 65.67. Assembling and preserving such an inspiring group of these historical works of art is not only a great accomplishment but is a true service for future generations of numismatists. Our kudos for a third Gold Star Award.
tradedollarnut - Liberty Seated Dollars Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1840-1873)
Simply put, this set of Seated Liberty Silver Dollars is the finest set ever assembled in the history of American numismatics. Only 10 of the 44 coins are known in a grade higher than is in this set, and all but two of those, are unique examples. From a purely numismatic standpoint, the effort and resources that have gone into building this set are enormous. No other set in the category comes even close. A Hall of Fame set, and now recipient of a sixth Gold Star Award. Awesome!

Perfection 11 - Liberty Seated Dollars Basic Set, Proof (1858-1873)
Mr. Perfection states that Seated Dollars are his favorite registry set. These iconic American coins are “simply beautiful.” They are not widely collected due to their cost. Many Seated Dollars come dark. Mr. Perfection has passed over these even at higher grades in favor of toned coins where the colors are easily seen. He is trying to replace the lone DCAM in this set due to his belief that top Seated Dollars should be original and toned. With a current Set Rating of 66.257, this will be his third consecutive Gold Star Award.
Simpson - Trade Dollars, Proof (1873-1885)
(Note that the award includes the 1 sub-set in this collection which is ranked #1.) Just as tradedollarnut’s Mint State set almost defies improvement, Simpson’s set of Proofs does the same. For one thing, it’s complete, including both the 1884 and 1885. The set rating of 66.71 is limited only by the existing coins. A third year for the Gold Award, we have confidence that as the few coins that could improve this set come on the market, they will soon be included here.

IPS - Morgan Dollars with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1878-1921)
With the retirement of California 1 to Platinum last year, the IPS Morgan Dollar set stepped up from Blue to Gold. And what a set! With a rating of 65.63 it now sits atop one of the most competitive sets in the entire registry. Hats off for a well-deserved second Gold Star Award.
Have Fun With Your Coins - Indian Head $2-1/2 Gold, Proof (1908-1915)
Proof Gold has long been referred to as the Caviar of American Numismatics, and what a serving this set is. With a rating of 68.25, it is the finest ever assembled by almost 2 points. Don’t expect much in the way of improvement anytime soon though, as every coin in this set is either the finest known, or tied for that honor! A second Gold Star Award is a slam dunk. Congrats!
The South Texas Collection - $3 Gold No 1870-S Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1854-1889)
(Note that the award includes the 1 sub-set in this collection which is ranked #1.)
It’s not often you encounter a set where almost every coin in it is considered rare. But when it comes to $3 Gold Pieces, where only four of the forty coins had an original mintage over 35,000 pieces, very few can be considered common. It is 100% complete, and still has some upgrade potential. We expect great things from this set in the years to come. Congratulations on a third Gold Star.
Tom Bender - $3 Gold with Major Varieties and 1855-S, Proof (1854-1889)
(Note that the award includes the 1 sub-set in this collection which is ranked #1.)
With the acquisition of the extraordinarily rare 1855-S Proof $3, Tom’s set now appears in this new category. And what a set it is! As rare as Proof $3’s are in any grade, what about a set that is 95% complete with a weighted GPA of 67.03! Fifteen of the thirty-nine coins sit at the top of the pop charts. With pedigrees that include Garrett, Bass and Trompeter, this set was a welcome addition to the Registry in 2012 and fully deserving of its fourth Gold Star award.
Simpson - $4 Gold, Proof (1879-1880)
One Stella is pretty amazing. All four, in an average of 67.35 is, well, we’re speechless. Simpson has managed to put together the finest set of Stellas ever assembled, and for that, we can only give him another Gold Star and tip our hats for an incredible achievement.

Simpson - Indian Head $5 Gold, Circulation Strikes (1908-1929)
Like Simpson’s other sets, this one is amazing as well. With almost half the coins finest knowns, and a Set Rating of 66, it is the current finest by just over two points. Half the coins in the set though do have some upgrade potential, so we hope that before long, this set will rank as the All Time Finest. It now trails that title by only a miniscule .2 grade point. A well-earned fourth Gold Star and seventh consecutive win in the category.

AWA Collection - Liberty Head $20 Gold with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1850-1907)
(Note that the award includes the 2 sub-sets in this collection which are ranked #1.)
Talk about a tough set! At over 97% complete, this phenomenal set has been decades in the making and ranks as the finest ever assembled. In 2009, PCGS had the pleasure of examining and certifying this set, in preparation for inclusion in the PCGS Registry. To say it was one of the highlights of our numismatic careers was an understatement. There are so many "Finest Knowns" and Top Pops in this set that it defies description. Between the 1850-O and the 1855-S, there is a total of FOUR coins PCGS has graded higher than the pieces shown in the set. For a real numismatic treat, check out the images that accompany each of the set composition listings. Almost all the coins possess gorgeous original color and surfaces. Its seventh Gold Star Award, with more to come.
A & A Saints Collection - St. Gaudens $20 Gold with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1907-1932)
(Note that the award includes the 2 sub-sets in this collection which are ranked #1.)
With Simpson’s Saints having gone Platinum in 2014, A&A’s collection now ranks as the top competitive set in this very popular category. With a rating just over 66, twenty-two of the 53 coins are at the top of the Pop Charts, and pieces below 65 are few and far between. As we know, a complete set of Saints ain’t easy, with more than a few TOUGH dates near the end of the series. Our congratulations on a second Gold Star Award.
Best Modern Sets of 2016
Mitchell J. Spivack (Wondercoin) - Top 100 Modern Coins
This set has some of the best if not the best coins in the modern era. There are a number of coins in this set that many collectors have dreamed of such as the 1969-S Double Die Lincoln Cent, the No S Proof coins, the Cheerios Dollar, the Wisconsin Extra leaf quarters, the mysterious 1964 Special Mint Sets and numerous popular Doubled Die coins. This set is one of the most exciting sets, if not the most exiting set, that a collector can build in the modern era category. Although the completion factor is the same as when the set was awarded gold in 2014, the GPA has improved, triggering another gold award.
High Desert - Modern Type Set, Circulation Strikes (1950-present)
This is the third gold in a row for the High Desert collection. The collector has obtained some very difficult coins in almost impossible grades such as a circulation strike 1956 Washington Quarter in MS68 condition. Two more unique Top Pops include a 1942-D 10C MS68FB and 1958 50C MS67+FL. In fact, only seven coins in this set can be upgraded. Impressive.
Goldminer's Collection - U.S. Gold Complete Modern Set, Circulation Strikes and Proof (1980-present)
What a great way to build a set of some very scarce Gold Medals and Commemoratives that honor special events or significant individuals. Most of the coins in Goldminer’s Collection are graded perfect MS70 condition with no room for improvement. This is the third gold award for this outstanding collection.
The Hot Chick Collection - Collectors Mint Set, Circulation Strikes (1970-2000)
Hot Chick has done a great job in building a nice array of coins from Special Mint Sets. Many individuals sometimes wonder why they can’t find a 1970-D Kennedy half in circulation. That’s because they were only issued in these Special Mint Sets so finding any example in high grades is almost impossible unless you go through many sets. This set has 8 Top Pop coins with no coin in the set graded less than 66.
High Desert - Jefferson Nickels FS with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1938-1964)
(Note that the award includes the 1 sub-set in this collection which is ranked #1.) For the fourth year in a row, this set remains on top with an impressive grade point average of 68.47 and 95.12% of the coins Full Step. What a beautiful montage of some of the best Jefferson Nickels that exist and they are all in this one set. 11 coins in the set are the single finest ever graded. Hard to beat.
Buddy Byers (The Buckeye Collection) - Jefferson Nickels Basic Set, Proof (1938-1964)
Buckeye remains on top, besting three retired sets and 93 competitive sets. With a weighted GPA of 69.35 and nearly 62% of the coins in the set deep cameo, this set remains very tough to beat. Congratulations for winning gold for the third year.
Almighty Dimes - Roosevelt Dimes FB with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1946-Present)
(Note that the award includes the 2 sub-sets in this collection which are ranked #1.) This is a remarkable set and what a great way to represent the Roosevelt Dime series. This set is comprised of some of the finest examples that exist for Roosevelt Dimes. For example, it has a 1947-S MS68+FB, 1953 MS68FB, 1954-S MS68FB, 1955 MS67+FB just to name a few of the single finest graded. Just a breathtaking set!
The Diehl Washington Quarter Collection - Washington Quarters with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1932-Present)
(Note that the award includes the 1 sub-set in this collection which is ranked #1.) With the Wondercoin collection going platinum, it left the door open for the very solid Diehl Washington Quarter Collection to take top honors. So for the second year in a row, the set is awarded gold. Diehl has done a fabulous job of acquiring many high end examples of circulation strike Washington Quarters and varieties in the series. Many of the coins have really low populations in high grades. Others like the 2013-D Fort McHenry Np Quarter have a pop of 1 with none finer. Simply a challenging, yet, very fun set to complete!
Brian Ray (The Buckeye Collection) - Washington Quarters Basic Set, Proof (1936-Present)
There’s plenty of competition in this category, but the Buckeye Collection still on top at the 2016 deadline. Over the year, since Brian won his first gold for this set, his GPA has gradually ticked up as well as the number of deep cameos in the set. Washington Quarters are extremely popular and in this set there are many high examples representing this fabulous series.
jwb1040 - Washington Quarters Basic Set, Circulation Strikes and Proof (1932-Present)
We love it when a collector puts together a very uniform, high-grade set, and that is exactly what this collector has done. There are many Top Pops and numerous single finest graded examples. This set squeezed by Don “myster” Peters’ basic set to win top honors this year. Great job!
Don "myster" Peters (donmyster) - Washington Quarters with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes and Proof (1932-Present)
Washington Quarters have always been a very popular coin series making competition in this series intense. Donmyster has successfully built a large and impressive set of both circulation strike and proof Washington Quarters. The set is almost 100% complete and it’s only missing the 1943 Doubled Die Obverse FS-103. Still, because of the set’s high GPA, Don remains in the top spot.
The Diehl Washington Quarter Collection - Washington Quarters Complete Variety Set with all Die Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1932-Present)
No, the set is not complete but impressive never-the-less. There are 605 coins required which includes all the Fivaz-Stanton varieties, 15 which were added this year. Don’s set lists 576 coins. And, if you look at the statistics you’ll see that he has gradually improved the percent complete over the last year. As a result, he wins gold this year!

Phillips Collection - Washington Quarters Complete Variety Set, Proof (1936-present)
Winning gold in 2015, this set continues to dominate this year. The set is only missing one coin, the illusive 2005-S Minnesota Silver DDR-010 and this is with the addition of 9 new Fivaz-Stanton varieties. This is a phenomenal accomplishment and sets the bar really high.
Phillips Collection - Washington Quarters Complete Variety Set, Circulation Strikes (1932-1998)
Phillips Collection has amassed a very tough, yet, really fun set of Washington Quarters which includes numerous illusive varieties. Many of the varieties registered in the set are pop 1 coins with none being finer. Over the last year, this collector has improved his set by adding three new issues. Keep up the great work!
The Diehl Washington Quarter Collection - Washington Quarters Complete Variety Set with No Minor MN Extra Tree Die Varieties, Circulation Strikes and Satin Finish (1999-Present)
(Note that the award includes the 1 sub-set in this collection which is ranked #1.) Another magnificent set of Washington Quarters! This time it also has Satin Finish Washington Quarters all in very high grades. This is not to mention some very tough Satin Finish varieties like the Pop 1 with none higher 2005-P Satin Finish Quarter DDR FS-801. Congratulations!
admiraladm - Washington Quarters Complete Variety Set, Proof (1999-present)
The admiraladm set is very impressive as nearly every coin is PR70 Deep Cameo both in Clad and Silver, except for the 2005-S Minnesota Silver DDR-010! The owner of this set makes it look very easy to build a such a uniform set but we know how much hard work and effort has gone into this. Thanks for sharing this set for all of us to see.
LOR - Franklin Half Dollars FBL Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1948-1963)
(Note that the award includes the 1 sub-set in this collection which is ranked #1.) Welcome to gold! One look at this set and you can see why. There are so many unique Top Pops in this set that it makes this set nearly unbeatable. The set has bested the HOF JFS set and two award winning retired sets, EWP and GRFN. The finest possible set rating for this set is 70.553. LOR sits at 70.46. All we can say is, “WOW!”
Churchill Cameo Franklins (with major varieties) - Franklin Half Dollars with Major Varieties, Proof (1950-1963)
(Note that the award includes the 1 sub-set in this collection which is ranked #1.) This set is short, but sweet! Every coin is deep cameo except for the 1961 DDR. It’s a solid PR67 and a Top Pop. The three PR69DC’s in the set are the best you can get. Great job on building such a spectacular set and congratulations for winning gold the third year in a row!
A Sourdough's Cache - Franklin Half Dollars FBL Basic Set, Circulation Strikes and Proof (1948-1963)
What a beautiful and colorful set! Many Franklin Half Dollars in this set are wonderfully toned and in very high Mint State grades. For the proof issues many of them are in really nice Deep Cameo contrast. The set remains on top for the second year in a row.
Golden Gate FS Franklins - Franklin Half Dollars FBL Complete Variety Set, Circulation Strikes (1948-1963)
The Franklin Half Dollar series has many varieties that make the set challenging yet really fun to collect. Some varieties are very scarce especially in high grades. This set is 100% complete and some of the varieties are Pop 1 with none being finer. There are some serious collectors with complete sets in this category, but Golden Gate is holding that number one spot.
PD Shad (PDShad's Complete Major Variety MS & Proof) - Kennedy Half Dollars with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes and Proof (1964-Present)
The PD Shad’s Complete JFK Collection is another set that continues to dominate year after year. One look at the combination set and you can see why the judges continue to recognize this collector’s achievement. This is an extremely challenging set yet this collector continues to improve it, increasing his set rating every year. Is there still room for improvement? Yes, but not much!
Whitlock Collection - Kennedy Half Dollars with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes and Proof (1964-Present)
It’s a horse race! At the deadline, Acacia, PDShad and Whitlock had set ratings of 68.86. Now, a month later all are still tied at 68.89. Amazing, especially considering how nice all three sets are. Whitlock first entered the scene in April, 2015, and in a year has managed to tie the top spot. The set is filled with unique Top Pops and too many Top Pops to list. Congratulations!
VDBCoins - Kennedy Half Dollars Complete Variety Set, Circulation Strikes (1964-Present)
The VDBCoins set looks amazing! It has many Top Pop Kennedy Half Dollars in MS and SP condition. Not to mention many varieties in high grades which are also included in this set. VDBcoins has managed to acquire every single variety needed to make this set 100% complete. Congratulations for winning gold for the second year in a row.
GDaD Ikes - Eisenhower Dollars Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1971-1978)
After the Sonoron Monsoon set retired in December, 2015, GDaD Ikes took over the number one spot, and not only that, bested the Monsoon set rating to land in the coveted #1 All-Time Finest slot. This beautiful set is filled Top Pops and look that stunning 1974 MS67, the single finest graded! Nice.
Sonoran Monsoon - Susan B. Anthony Dollars with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes and Proof (1979-1981, 1999)
(Note that the award includes the 1 sub-set in this collection which is ranked #1.) Although the Susan B. Anthony Dollar is a short set compared to most other U.S. coin sets, this set cannot be taken lightly. The Sonoran Monsoon Set of Susan B. Anthony Dollars contains several of the finest Susan B. Anthony Dollars from circulation. This includes the first year of issue, the 1979-P in PCGS MS68 Pop 1 with none being finer. Imagine the first year the coins were struck. The public was excited about the new coins with tens of millions of them going into circulation. The finest first year issue in existence now resides in this set. Simply amazing to say the least!

Sonoran Monsoon - Presidential Dollars Complete Set with Edge Errors, Circulation Strikes and Satin Finish (2007-2016)
(Note that the award includes the 3 sub-sets in this collection which are ranked #1.) This collector has taken the complete variety set of Presidential dollars to a new level. 383 coins are currently required in the set but that number changes as new varieties are discovered. Can the set every be complete? Maybe not, but Sonoran Monsoon has come close. At 91.12% complete, he’s missing only a few issues. Great job on a very tough set.
Subway Tokens - Baseball Hall of Fame $5 HOFer Signature Set, Circulation Strikes (2014)
Last year this special little set was nearly perfect. This year, it’s all a MS70! And, with the Top Pop Bonuses, it rates 71.08. You cannot get better than that! Perfection.
Best Mint and Proof Sets of 2016
High Desert - 1793 Mint Set
Yes, it’s a small set with only four coins. But what four coins! The 1793 Half Cent, and the Chain, Wreath and Cap cents of 1793. All three of the Cents are finest knowns. Most collectors would consider any one of these coins, in nearly any grade, as a centerpiece of their collection. Here is a set of all four with a weighted GPA of 66.62! Check out the photograph of the 1793 Liberty Cap Cent! Talk about incredible… A most deserving second Gold Star.
Merion Collection - 1906 Mint Set with Gold
(Note that the award includes the 1 sub-set in this collection which is ranked #1.) Here is a really nice Mint Set, containing 24 coins, 11 of them gold! Most of the copper, nickel and smaller silver coins are in the 65-66 range, while most of the halves and gold average MS 63-64. Overall, a great-looking set and a proud recipient of a second Gold Star for 2016.
ErasmusHall - 1936-Present Mint Set
Now requiring 1,182 coins, completion of this set is a collecting accomplishment few can match. This is not to mention that the set now boasts a set rating of 67.96, an improvement from last year. ErasmusHall has proven to be a dedicated collector with an eye for condition. With many coins imaged, you’ll do yourself a favor by browsing through this amazing collection. His seventh consecutive win in the category and his fourth Gold Star Award pay testimony to the dedication to maintaining this outstanding set.
Mi Amor - 2005-2010 Mint Set Satin Finish
Although it encompasses only six years, this set require an amazing 162 coins for completion! And Mi Amor has done it better than anyone else, achieving a Set Rating of 69.21, and (needless to say) 100% completion. After winning a Blue Star award last year, we’re happy to present a Gold Star Award for 2016.
Bob McCann (Mac's money) - 2009-Present Mint Set with Major Varieties
(Note that the award includes the 1 sub-set in this collection which is ranked #1.) At a first glance a 2009 to date set does not appear to be challenging. However, once you view the set composite and realize how many coins are required to complete the set (currently 385!), you begin to appreciate all the hard work and efforts involved in building this set. Congratulations to Bob McCann for taking on such a huge challenge and having so many high end examples representing coins from 2009 to date. We proudly award a second consecutive Gold Star to this fine set.
Monte Weiner the Sebastian Collection - 1857 Proof Set
Proof coins really made their debut around this time, so this early set is a real treat to see. With a set rating of 66.47, the quality is certainly there, and we are delighted to award a second Gold Star Award for 2016.
Evans T. Henry (bhenry661) - 1865 Proof Set with Gold
Anytime you see the words “Proof” and “Gold” together, you know you’re in for a special set. BHenry’s 1865 Proof Set with Gold is simply amazing, with a weighted GPA of 67.114. Even though he’s still looking for the $20, we felt that what has been accomplished so far was fully deserving of his first Gold Star Award.
Best Colonials, Private Issues & Territorial Gold and Patterns Sets of 2016
J & L Norse Set - Norse American Commemorative Medals (1925)
These interesting Medals have always attracted the attention of collectors, and J&L has put together the ultimate set, with both the finest-known Silver Thick, and Gold medals. What more can we add but a Gold Star Award for this fine collecting accomplishment.
Alamo Collection - Early American Coins and Tokens Basic Design Set (1616-1820)
The Alamo Collection contains high-grade examples of virtually every Colonial type. The weighted GPA of 57.50 means that most of the coins are Mint State, which is quite an accomplishment any time Colonial coins are involved. While two coins are still required for completion, the quality of this set is quite impressive. A fifth consecutive award, and a fourth Gold for an outstanding group of tough coins.
Richard Saunders Collection - Pine Tree Silver Basic Set (1667-1682)
Massachusetts silver coins are among the most popular of all U.S. Colonials. This set is complete and includes each of the three denominations, plus both the Large and Small Planchet Shillings. We are pleased to award a second Gold Star for 2016.
Bill Berenia (High End Basic Set) - Philippines Complete Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1903-1945)
This is a monster set of 144 coins. This is not only the first and only complete set in its category thus far, it also has an impressive Weighted GPA of 62.95. There are plenty of tough coins in this set, but the 1906-S 1 Peso is a real standout.
Sixth Army Collection - Philippines Complete Classic Set, Circulation Strikes (1903-1945)
The coins of the U.S. Philippines enjoy a broad, enthusiastic collector base. The Sixth Army set is one of two complete collections in this category, but this one is slightly better with a weighted GPA of 64.70. What makes this set extra special is the large number of Top Pop coins. This is the third consecutive Gold Star award for this fine set.
kruegerfourstar - Philippines Fifty Centavos, Circulation Strikes (1903-1945)
With the promotion of Just Having Fun’s set to Platinum, kruegerfourstar’s set moves into the stop spot this year. These beautiful coins are extremely popular with collectors, and we’re pleased to award a Gold Star to this excellent set.
Simpson - Gobrecht Dollar Patterns Redbook Set (1836-1839)
The Gobrecht Dollar Patterns of the late 1830s are among the most interesting and desirable of the silver issues of the mid 19th century. All are very rare, and completing the set is an achievement in itself. Doing it with three finest known’s and a Set Rating of 66.107 is nothing short of amazing. But at this point, we expect that from Mr. Simpson. Another Gold Star Award for the shelf! Is there any room left?

Best Low Ball Sets of 2016
Buffalo Hunter - Buffalo Nickels, Low Ball (1913-1938)
Since winning gold in 2013, this herd of well-worn Buffalos has seen some rough road. Who would have thought that Buffalo Hunter could have worsened his herd going from a GPA of 3.719 two years ago to today’s GPA of 3.609! While some of the coins are not PO01, they are still the lowest possible example known. The set now boasts 17 of the single worst graded ever. Congratulations for winning top honors four years in a row, three of which are gold.
Chesapeake Collection - Barber Half Dollars, Low Ball (1892-1915)
The owner of this collection has done some serious work since first adding his set in March, 2015. He has searched and found the worst possible Barber half dollars to place in his set and the results have been exemplary. He landed in first place in January but continued to worsen his set which is filled with a multitude of the single lowest ever graded. Now with a set rating of 70.71, he’s close to having the lowest possible at 70.941. Check out the images of his beautifully circulated half dollars.

Chesapeake Collection - Walking Liberty Half Dollars, Low Ball (1916-1947)
Winning gold seems to be the trend for this Low Ball set of Walkers which took top honors in 2015. This set first appeared in March, 2014 and has steadily lowered its GPA. The collector has treated us with a digital album of some of the lowest Walkers ever graded. As he mentions in his set description, PCGS has certified only one PO01 Walker, his 1918-S. Great job!

Sourdough ("End of the Trail" XI) - Morgan Dollars Basic Set, Low Ball (1878-1921)
Morgan dollar Low Ball collecting is quite challenging and this collector has done a remarkable job of building his Low Ball collection. Now, for the fifth and final year in a row (the collector retired this set In July, 2016), this set wins gold again. Every coin is a Top Pop and 17 are the single lowest graded. The set is remarkable, and, for the first time ever, a Low Ball set is being inducted into the Hall Fame. Congratulations!
Johnny Goldsmith (Pocket Change) - Morgan Dollar Top 100 Vam Set, Low Ball (1878-1921)
For the third year in a row, Pocket Change has impressed us by lowering his GPA even more. His set now has an amazing 41 Top Pops which are the single lowest graded. His set far surpasses the other registered sets in this category and is the only one that is 100% complete. Great job!
Chesapeake Collection - Peace Dollars, Low Ball (1921-1935)
OK. Now we are convinced that this collector is attempting to build a complete Low Ball collection in all series! Here he is again with some great low graded Peace dollars including a Pop 1/0 1935-S. While not yet besting Jimmy Austin’s great set, he’s getting close by slowing lowering his GPA over the last year. For 2016, he gets the gold.
Best Everyman Sets of 2016
Liberty Headdress - Everyman Indian Cents (1859-1909)
Nice! Nice! Nice! Every coin is an AU58 with a few pluses scattered throughout. The set boasts three of the single finest AU58+s graded: 1865, 1885 and 1909-S. Since winning gold in 2015, this collector has continued to improve his set. Great job.
Mi¢hael Hassler, Master Sergeant, USAF, Retired Combat Air Crew Member & Vietnam Veteran - Everyman Lincoln Cents (1909-1958)
This is the fourth gold award in a row as Michael continues to dominate against 27 other collectors competing in this category. The set is filled with Top Pops including a 1918, 1921-S, 1925-S, 1926, 1930, 1931-S, 1937, and 1953-S which are the single finest AU58+s graded. It’s just about as good as you can get in the Everyman category. Congratulations!
Joseph M. Wojteczko/Beancounter I - Everyman Barber Dimes (1892-1916)
Beancounter goes platinum this year by winning his fifth gold award in a row. This opens the door for other collectors to win big, but so far no one is near complete. Barber coins are very difficult to find in nice AU condition. It seems like all survivors are in either Good or Mint State condition, with very few in-between. Beancounter has done a great job of building a complete set of AU Barber dimes. Now with a set rating of 58.12, up from last year’s 57.92, his coins are a consistent AU55 or AU58.
View Digital Album
J. Dennis Kozimer (KozMc Mercs) - Everyman Mercury Dimes (1916-1945)
Now all coins in this set grade AU58 with just two exceptions, the 1916-D (F15) and 1930-S (AU53). This set is the only complete set in the category and by far the nicest. Continuing to dominate, the set wins award for the third year in a row.
Tom Sears MD (Bustnut) - Everyman Capped Bust Half Dollars (1807-1839)
AU58s and AU58+s complete this wonderful set. Starting the set in early 2013, the set has remained on top ever since. Now, with four Top Pops, the set is very close to achieving the finest grade possible. One of the comments from last year, “How in the world did you get eight of the PCGS 58 Plus Bust Half Dollars graded? No way anyone can catch you now. Super job!”, is now incorrect. There are 13 AU58+s in the set now!

cornhusker collection GBR - Everyman Barber Half Dollars (1892-1915)
In this very competitive category, and with 10 sets complete, it is hard to stay on top. But cornhusker has improved his steadily over the last year to land in the coveted number one spot, surpassing the BarberNut collection which won gold in 2013 & 2014 and the SurfCity set which won gold in 2015. There is good reason why this set deserves gold; a great percentage of the coins in the set are Top Pops! An amazing set in a very competitive category.
CHERKAAL - Everyman Franklin Half Dollars (1948-1963)
(Note that the award includes the collector’s second set which is ranked #1.) CHERKAAL is into Franklins. This is the first time that the judges can remember awarding two sets, from the same collectors, of the same type. Yes, CHERKAAL has two perfect sets and is tied with himself as well a newcomer, Gem State (Idaho) 58s.
Sunshine State Silver Dollars - Everyman Trade Dollars (1873-1878)
We love this set. Four of the finest graded and all but just one Top Pops! This collector won a “Best of the Registry” nod last year and this year wins his first gold. He has been very diligent about upgrading his set and now has a nearly perfect set.
johnk1942 (3) - Everyman Morgan Dollars (1878-1921)
John still dominates in this category, besting the number one retired set, the Hoosier Collection, by nearly 2 points. And, the set continues to improve, if that’s possible. At the deadline last year, it’s GPA was 58.072, now it sits at 58.285. Great job at building what’s soon to be the best possible set ever.
Brad's Everyman Peace $'s - Everyman Peace Dollars (1921-1935)
Brad’s Peace Dollar set tops the All-Time Finest list, besting two complete retired sets. Three years ago he achieved a nearly unbeatable GPA of 58.09. Now the set has a GPA of 58.16 bringing the collector another gold award. The set is beautifully displayed with every coin imaged.
Best African Sets of 2016
Virginia Transplant (thush) - Angola Portuguese Colony Denomination Type Set, Circulation Strikes (1921-1974)
Until 1975, Angola was once a Portuguese colony on the western coast of southern Africa. This set includes one example of every denomination issued between 1921 and 1974. The majority of the Thush Collection are unique Top Pop coins.
Richard K. LeVan (EML Collection) - Congo (The Republic) Gold, Proof (1965)
This set of Congolese gold coins includes all of the low-mintage coins from 1965. Reportedly, 70% of the original mintage was melted down, leaving very few examples for collectors. It’s a tough set with very little room for improvement.
SWvdM - South African George VI Denomination Type Set, Proof (1937-1952)
This is a beautifully matched 1952 Proof Set that includes every denomination in exceptional condition. The lowest grade on any coin is PR66 and eight of the eleven coins are Top Pops.
Tom Mendenhall (Tom's Proof Kugerrands) - South African Krugerrand, Proof (1967-Present)
The Krugerrand was once the most important gold coins in the world. Millions of Mint State examples were sold to bullion buyers, but the smart buyers purchased the much rarer Proof versions. This collection is complete from 1967 to 2002, inclusive, and now includes coins from 2006 and 2007. Think about it—there are 38 ounces of gold in this set!

Hetman - Kazakhstan Silver 500 Tenge, Proof (2000-present)
This set caught our attention because of its size, the level of completion (100%) and the overall quality. All of these are low mintage coins. All but a few of the coins in this set are a Top Pop and the GPA rose from last year to an amazing 71.128. The owner has done a great job of keeping up with new issues.

Layb's Euros - 2000 Belgium Euro Mint Set
This set was first registered in 2007 and has won awards each year. All of the coins are common, but this set shows the diverse interest in the collecting world, and the dedication of the people who collect those coins.
Caranett - Denmark 20 Gold Kroner, Circulation Strikes (1873-1917)
This is a complete set of the gold 20 Kroners issued by Denmark between 1873 and 1917. These are generally considered to be bullion coins, so most buyers did not concern themselves with quality. This owner has assembled as set with a weighted GPA of 66.553 and most of the coins are Top Pops. Well done!
kwayoo - French Centime, Circulation Strikes (1962-2001)
This is a very interesting set that starts out with a bunch of common coins, then becomes progressively more rare as the mintages drop from a high of over 52 million to a low of 2,500. Some years are only available in sets. The key date 1991 is here (with medallic rotation), as is every other date. 100% complete; weighted GPA of 65.70.
Geonaute - French 10 Centimes, Circulation Strikes (1914-1946)
This is a great set of the holed 10 Centimes issued by France over a thirty-two year period encompassing two World Wars and the intervening peace. The quality of this set is simply superb (weighted GPA pf 66.53) and it is 100% complete. While most of the coins are common, we can only imagine the time and effort that went into building this set.
Typetone - French 50 Centimes, Circulation Strikes (1897-1920)
The 50 Centimes is a small silver coin that received little attention from collectors when it circulated. This collection is relatively easy to assemble, but difficult to find in top condition. Once again, the owner has improved the quality of this set, raising the weighted GPA from 64.53 to 64.617.
Virginia Transplant (thush) - French Indo-China Colony Cent, Circulation Strikes (1885-1943)

Larry Gray (1) - German States 3 Mark Type Set, Circulation Strikes (1908-1918)
Mr. Gray’s is the only complete set in this category, with no one else coming anywhere close. He has been working on this set for years and continues to upgrade whenever possible. This year, the weighted GPA stands at 66.063. Check out his great TrueView™ images.
The Sheffield Collection XIV - 1/2 Mark Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1905-1919)
Sheffield has done a great job over the past couple of years in building this set of German Half Marks. Sheffield’s underlying date set is 100% complete, but this set includes all of the dates and mints issued by Germany from 1905 to 1919. This set is now 96.20% complete with a weighted GPA of 65.32. We know the owner of this set and, as predicted, this set has gotten bigger and better every year.
CoinKing - 25 Pfennig Basic Set, Proof (1909-1912)
This 100% complete set includes Proof examples of every date and mintmark of the unusual 25 Pfennig denomination. The mintage figures for most of these coins remain unknown, but all are extremely rare. It would be impossible to duplicate this set in such a remarkably high condition.
RMS Collection - German Third Reich Type Set, Circulation Strikes (1933-1948)
RMS was the first to complete this set, which now holds a weighted GPA of 64.64. There are several contenders in this category, so it will be interesting to see if RMS can hold the top spot. In the meantime, kudos for assembling a great set of WWII-era German coins.
Talmar12 - German Third Reich 2 Reichsmark Complete Set, Circulation Strikes (1933-1939)
(Note that the award includes the 1 sub-set in this collection which is ranked #1.) jhd2000 - German Planck 2 Mark Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1957-1971)
(Note that the award includes the 1 sub-set in this collection which is ranked #1.) This is a big set of coins that circulated heavily. What’s impressive here is the quality of this collection because many of the early dates were not set aside by collectors, so finding them in top condition is really tough. 100% complete with a weighted GPA of 63.21.
jhd2000 - German 5 Mark Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1951-1974)
(Note that the award includes the 1 sub-set in this collection which is ranked #1.) After World War II, Germans focused on getting their lives back together and rebuilding their country. As a result, they spent little time on coin collecting, especially on the common coins they used every day. As a result, it is very difficult to locate high-grade examples of these 5 Marks prior to 1965. This set is 100% complete with a weighted GPA of 63.89.
Caranett - British Edward VII Sovereign Complete Mintmark Set, Circulation Strikes (1902-1910)
A fabulous, multi-country set of arguably the most ubiquitous gold coin of the 20th century. Just completing this set is quite an accomplishment (think of the instrinsic value alone of 38 coins, each containing almost half an ounce of gold). There is one other 100% complete collection within this category, but the Caranett set beats it with a weighted GPA of 63.45.
CB Gold Collection - British George V Sovereign Complete Mintmark Set, Circulation Strikes (1911-1932)

The London Coin Company Ltd. (thelondoncoincompany) - British Elizabeth II 2 Pounds Silver Britannia Date Set, Circulation Strikes (1998-present)

Eoin - Irish Shilling Date Set, Circulation Strikes (1928-1968)
This set is a load of bull. No, really, every coin features a bull on the reverse. This set has room for improvement as far as some of the grades are concerned, but we’re impressed by the fact that it is 100% complete and that it contains the very rare 1937 Shilling.
rosswb - Russian Rouble Emperor Set (1704-1915)
What an interesting set. Because it touches on all of the Russian Emperors and Empresses, this set is loaded with history and wonderful coins. Because of the variety of designs, this set would make a great exhibit. There is not a single Mint State coin in this set, but every coin is great in its own right. Weighted GPA is 48.68.
rosswb - Russian Nicholas I Roubles, Circulation Strikes (1826-1858)
This is an incredibly difficult set to collect. Completing it is nearly impossible (rosswb is at 57.14%) and finding these coins in high grade only adds to the difficulty (this set has a weighted GPA of 48.29). We’ll be keeping an eye on this set to see what improvements are made in the coming year. Keep up the good work.

The Sheffield Collection XX - Swiss 1 Silver Franc, Circulation Strikes (1850-1967)
This is a large, comprehensive set of Swiss 1 Francs, each coin the size of a US Quarter Dollar and often equated with the US Barber Quarter series. The owner has done a great job of filling in most of the holes with high-grade examples. As with Sheffield’s ½ Franc set, we expect this set to get better every year. Over the last year, the set remained at 94.92% completion, but the weighted GPA rose slightly to 65.98.
WJG Swiss Shooting Talers - Swiss Shooting Festival Commemoratives, Circulation Strikes (1842-1939)
An outstanding set of Swiss "Shooters." This set is 100% complete with a weighted GPA of 65.10. This is a remarkably high level considering that most of the coins are from the 1800s! If you're not familiar with these coins, check them out. They are good-sized coins that all have interesting designs.
Tryzub - Ukraine Commemoratives Complete Set Reform Coinage (1996-Present)
(Note that the award includes the 10 sub-sets in this collection which are ranked #1.) This BIG set contains 633 coins and it gets bigger each year as new coins are issued (how about ten new ones in 2013 alone). Virtually every coin is a unique Top Pop!

This is a relatively short set, but it is 100% complete and has a weighted GPA of 67.563. Every coin is a Top Pop, many of which are unique for the grade. We’re not sure of the connection, but Haiti was fascinated by American Indian leaders on their 1971 coins.
RFS Industries - Mexican Ferdinand VII (Draped Bust) 8 Reales, Circulation Strikes (1811-1821)
This classic, Mexican set includes 8 Reales issued under the reign of Ferdinand VII. Amazingly, this set is 100% complete and the lowest grade is XF40 (the 1814/3 overdate, of course). What a great set.

Goldminer's Collection - U.S. Silver Complete Modern Set, Circulation Strikes and Proof (1971-present)
Even though the U.S. Mint ended its use of silver for circulating coinage in 1970, that hasn’t meant an end to the issuance of silver coins. Since 1971, we show there have been 446 mint issues struck using some silver. Goldminer has managed to assemble them all, with a Set Rating of 70.718. Some 90% of the coins in this set are unimprovable, and we are quite impressed that a set of this size and scope has achieved such a lofty Rating. A well earned Gold Star Award to be sure.
Boka Collection - Large Cents Die Variety Set by Sheldon, Circulation Strikes (1794)
When collecting by die variety comes up, two names come to mind: Dr. William Sheldon and Al C. Overton. And few specialties are more time-honored and respected than the collecting of early large cents by die variety. Among Sheldon variety collectors, 1794 is by far the most interesting year, as the subtle differences in the head of Liberty provide for fascinating study. Following in the steps of Walter Husak, Boka has managed to complete all 72 varieties of 1794 cents, including the famous Starred Reverse. This is truly a collecting achievement that would have garnered great respect well over a century ago.
Cajun Collection - Lincoln Cents Basic Set, Proof (1936-1942)
The Proof coins of 1936 to 1942 have long been very popular, and Cajun’s collection of Lincoln Cents from that period stands near the brink of perfection with a Set Rating of 68.81. In thirty years, PCGS has graded only four individual coins that could be used to upgrade this set. The 1937-42 issues all sit at the top of the Population Report. Congratulations on this fine accomplishment.
Tom Bender - Capped Bust Half Dimes with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1829-1837)
Among the many amazing new sets this year is Tom Bender’s incredible set of Capped Bust Half Dimes. An incredible eight of the fourteen coins are Pop 1, finest knowns! How is that for seeking out the absolute best? Bender’s set has a Rating of 67.947 (66.74 without any bonuses) which for an early 19th century set is almost unheard of. We proudly welcome Tom’s set to the Gold Star Club in its debut year.
BELLE - Roosevelt Dimes Basic Set, Proof (1950-present)
While a Proof Roosevelt Dime set may not be the most difficult to set to complete, doing so with a Set Rating over 71 is a whole different ballgame. Belle has managed to gather the finest examples on the market, and every coin after 1968 is in the ultimate possible grade. A few of the pre-1968 coins still have a bit of room for upgrading, and we trust that his set will only get better in the years to come. Our congratulations on a great first appearance!
Perfection - Barber Quarters Basic Set, Circulation Strikes and Proof (1892-1916)
Talk about blowing away the competition! Perfection’s Barber Quarter set has raised the bar on this set by nearly five full points! Containing over a dozen absolute finest knowns, and another two dozen tied for that honor, it’s an amazing assemblage of incredibly toned original coins. A set rating of just over 68 says it all. We welcome Perfection’s set to the Registry with a Gold Star.
Perfection - Barber Half Dollars Basic Set, Circulation Strikes and Proof (1892-1915)
Like his Barber Quarters, Perfections’ Barber Halves set an entirely new standard for the set, eclipsing the former champion by over five full points. This mind-blowing set has a Rating of 67.4, and it’s still missing the 1906-P! Eighteen coins are absolute finest knowns, and 24 are tied for that distinction. On behalf of PCGS, we’d like to thank Perfection for adding two outstanding sets to the Registry in for 2016.
Ron Bauer (Ron Bauer Walking Liberty Half Dollars) - Walking Liberty Half Dollars with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes and Proofs (1916-1947)
Walkers have long been among the most popular coins in U.S. numismatics, and the most competitive on the Registry. Ron has managed to assemble the current finest set in his first year, and still has yet to add a 1941 Proof! He heartily congratulate Ron on a most auspicious debut, and trust this set has great things in store in the near future.
JBK, Sr. - Presidential Dollars, Proof (2007-2016)
This complete set of Presidential Dollars includes every issue, in a grade of PR-70DC. Absolutely perfect! We welcome JBK to the Set Registry and the Gold Star Award club in his debut year.
Gerald Lott (G & J Lott Collection) - Indian Head $10 Gold Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1907-1933)
(Note that the award includes the 1 sub-set in this collection which is ranked #1.) $10 Indians are a tough set, and the current reigning champion is a new set this year. G&J Lott has entered the Registry with a splash, earning a rating of 65.17 in his first year. While he still has a short way to catch some previous champions, we cannot help but think that with a start like this, more is in store. For a treat, check out the photo of his 1909-S.
J & L 144 Complete Set - Silver Commemoratives 144 Piece Mintmark & Variety Set, Circulation Strikes (1892-1954)
It’s very rare that in an ultra popular and competitive set such as this, that a new entry will immediately capture the top spot. Well, rare things occasionally happen, and J&L’s complete 144-piece set of Classic Commemoratives has captured the No. 1 rank in the All-Time Finest set in its first year! With over two dozen absolute finest knowns, and an astonishing 75 or so coins tied for that honor, we are quite simply blown away by the quality and beauty of this set. A big Gold Star Award for this most deserving set.
kruegerfourstar - Philippines Fifty Centavos, Circulation Strikes (1903-1945)
With the promotion of Just Having Fun’s set to Platinum, kruegerfourstar’s set moves into the stop spot this year. These beautiful coins are extremely popular with collectors, and we’re pleased to award a Gold Star to this excellent set.
Sourdough ("Déjà vu" Jr.) - Morgan Dollars with Major Varieties, Low Ball (1878-1921)
This set was only on the scene for a year and is now retired. But in that one year, wow! Every single one of the 117 coins in the set are Top Pops. The same owner of the "End of the Trail" XI - Morgan Dollars Basic Set, Low Ball (1878-1921) set, which was just inducted into the PCGS Set Registry Hall of Fame as the first Low Ball set to achieve that status, took his Low Ball collecting fever a step further with this set and added all the major varieties. You really can’t get much better and it sets the bar for all who follow.
The Gem State 58's - Everyman Franklin Half Dollars (1948-1963)
Tied with the CHERKAAL sets, this is a perfect 59, the very best you can get in the Everyman category. Coming on the scene last September in the 11th position, Gem State quickly moved up the ranks to tie the #1 sets one month before the awards deadline. Congratulations!
Paul Menzies Ltd. - British Elizabeth II Gold Five Pound Date Set, Proof (1990-present)
This collection earned a “Best New Set” award this year because of its quality and the tremendous intrinsic value (over 25 ounces of pure gold when the set is complete). These are all great, tiny mintage coins.
Perth Collection - Newfoundland Cents, Circulation Strikes (1865-1947)
As a new entrant to this category, the Perth collection blew away the previous 10-year award winner thanks to its higher percentage of Red coins and a slightly better weighted GPA. That is extremely difficult to do in an established category, especially when three of the sets are already 100% complete.
Charles A. McVey (Charlie's Silver Pesos) - Mexican Silver Peso Date Set, Circulation Strikes (1866-1945)
As the counterpart of the U.S. Dollar, the Mexican Silver Peso of the late 1800’s was (and is) a popular collectible. Charlie’s set entered the arena with forty out of the required forty-one coins. This is a great start, and we look forward to seeing what Charlie can do with this set in the upcoming year.
Best Digital Albums of 2016
WingedLiberty’s Color of Money “Fireball Rainbow” Lincolns (The Paul A. Hubanks Collection) - Lincoln Cents Basic Set Colorless, Circulation Strikes (1909-1958)
This year collectors cast the most votes for the amazing toned Lincoln set owned by Paul Hubanks. 15 other digital albums were nominated by the judges, but this set shone above all others with over 35% of the vote. Paul has taken the technology of the digital album and has created a beautiful online album – with great pictures and a good story. Words cannot really express the sheer beauty of the coins in this set. Visit the digital album and see for yourself. Simply inspiring!
