Every year that we’ve done the Set Registry awards our judges have a harder and harder time deciding the winners…there are so many great sets. You all have done a fantastic job with your set building and WE’RE IMPRESSED! This year we have had to once again expand the number of sets we are recognizing…but these sets deserve it! Congratulations to all winners and ALL participants in the PCGS Set Registry. Your efforts have certainly got our attention, and your sets are the crème de la crème of the numismatic world!

Collector of the Year

D. L. Hansen - We’ve had some great sets registered over the past 16 years. Many of the collectors in the Registry have received well-deserved recognition for their achievement in building world-class sets. But, we have never seen one collector burst on the scene in the dramatic way that D.L. Hansen has. In one year, Mr. Hansen has registered 2,623 coins in the U.S. Coins Complete Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1792-1964). He is only 198 coins away from completion and is a serious contender to unseat the famed Louis Eliasberg collection. To further emphasize this collector’s accomplishment, many of the coins in his set are Top Pop or the single finest graded. And think about this, Eliasberg collected coins from 1925 to 1976. D.L. Hansen has done in one year what Louis Eliasberg did in 50. For this reason, we are recognizing Mr. Hansen with the first ever “Collector of the Year” award. Simply put, his set building has astounded us!

2017 GOLD LEVEL SETS

Best Classic Sets of 2017

Oliver Jung - The Type Set - Complete U.S. Type Set (1792-1964)
There are few collecting goals that U.S. numismatists aspire to more than a complete type set of U.S. coins. And no one has done it better than Oliver Jung! Not the incredible High Desert Collection (Hall of Fame set and LONG time registry winner), not Louis Eliasberg and not even D. L Hansen has assembled a better set. With a set rating of 66.61, it’s almost within a point of the theoretical maximum. The early copper is amazing, with MS66 and 67RB examples of most of the 18th century entries. Likewise, the early silver and gold is replete with finest-knowns and near finest-knowns. In fact, most of the avenues for improvement now lie in the “easy” stuff – mid 20th century stuff where a 68+ or 69 could replace a 68! A most deserving entry into the Hall of Fame!.

High Desert - Copper Type Set, Circulation Strikes (1793-1964)
High Deserts Type Sets have long dominated the PCGS Set Registry and it’s not difficult to see why. The Copper Type set currently ranks #1 on the All-Time Finest list and is 100% complete with a set rating of 64.88 marks his fourth consecutive Gold Star award, with more to come.

Subway Tokens - Commemoratives Complete Set, Circulation Strikes and Proof (1892-present)
We’re all familiar with the traditional 50 and 144-piece sets of U.S. commemoratives from 1892 to 1954, but here is a massive 424-piece set encompassing every U.S. commemorative issued to the present day! This past year, the Pan Pac Octagonal was added, completing this comprehensive set, and giving it a weighted GPA of 68.79. Including over 300 “finest knowns,” this is an outstanding achievement, and leads the second place set by almost exactly three points. This is Subway Tokens’ fourth gold for this incredible set.

High Desert - U.S. Half Cents & Cents Complete Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1793-present)
Starting with a 1796 Half Cent in MS65+RB and an MS-69 Wreath Cent, and including an 1877 Indian Cent in MS-66RD, this set can only be described as phenomenal. With a set rating of 67.46 it is not only the current finest set, but the finest all-time set, eclipsing ESM’s Hall of Fame set from previous years by almost two and a half points. Jaw-dropping quality and well deserving of a fourth gold!

KCV c-s w/MV Cir. - U.S. Nickels Complete Set with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1866-present)

After winning his first gold last year, KCV repeats this year for this outstanding 328-piece set. It is 100% complete and carries a set rating of 65.73. A few of the highlights include an 1884 in MS-66+, a 1904, also in MS66+, and a 1935-D in MS-67. Well done.

Monte Weiner the BigMo Collection - Civil War Set with Gold (1861-1865)
The Civil War was a most traumatic time for our nation, and with the Southern mints in transition during 1861, a fascinating period for coin collectors. BigMo has managed to assemble all 111 coins in this historic set (including gold!) and has achieved a set rating of 61.82. A few of the numerous highlights include one of the finest known 1861-D Half Eagles, the finest known 1862-S silver set, a Proof 65 1862 Eagle, and Proof 65+ 1862 Double Eagle. Eleven coins are absolute finest knowns with another five in the “un-improvable” class. A Gold Star winner for the past two years, it is more than deserving of a third this year.

ESM - Half Cents with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1793-1857)
ESM’s Half Cent collection is 100% complete (including the 1796 No Pole, 1797 Gripped Edge and the 1802/0, Rev of 1800) and is one of only three sets to ever achieve completion. The 1793 is a choice MS63BN example, and the tough 1796 With Pole is a choice AU55. Our congratulations on another well-deserved fourth Gold!

Jim McGuigan - Half Cents Die Variety Set by Cohen, Circulation Strikes (1793-1857)
We welcomed longtime Half Cent collector Jim McGuigan to the Gold Star club last year with his outstanding set of Half Cents by Cohen number. With a daunting 99 coins in the set, Jim has managed to complete 98% of the set in a grade of 53 or better. Just his 1793s include a 64, a two 65’s and a 66! Both of his 1796s are mint state. There are some tough varieties here, including the 1797 Gripped Edge and the 1802, Rev. 1800. In all we congratulate Jim on an outstanding achievement and a repeat Gold award.

ESM - Large Cents with Major Varieties, Proof (1817-1857)

All Proof coins prior to 1858 are tough, and the issues from the 1820s and 1830s are all extreme rarities with PCGS pops in the low single digits. Completing this set is a significant accomplishment and judging by the population data, one that will not be soon duplicated. With a set rating of 66.69, we are in awe of this collecting tour-de-force and proudly award his fourth Gold Star Award.

High Desert - Large Cents with Major Varieties (With the four Ultra Rarities), Circulation Strikes (1793-1857)

American Numismatics was born with Large Cent collecting, and High Desert’s set currently sits atop the Set Registry by nearly five points. It is 100% complete including the Strawberry Leaf Wreath Cent, the 1795 Reeded Edge, and the two 1795 Jefferson Heads! And given that these ultra rarites only come in low grade, this set still manages an overall rating of 58.16! A very tough set and quite an accomplishment. We are pleased to award a third Gold Star.

The Foreside Collection - Flying Eagle Cents with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes and Proof (1856-1858)

This may be a small set (only 5 mint state and 4 proof coins), but it is a glorious one nonetheless. With a weighted GPA of 66.00 it currently sits atop the Registry. This collector has an eye for quality, in fact his 1857 MS66 and 1858 Large Letters MS67 are Top Pops and his 1858 Large Letters PR66+CA is the single finest graded. We congratulate this collector on his third Gold Star award-winning effort.

ESM - Indian Cents with Major Varieties, Proof (1859-1909)

With an astonishing set rating of 69.75, it’s almost impossible to imagine a finer set. Over half the coins in this set are unimprovable and over three quarters of the coins are Cameos or Deep Cameos. After having won six Blue and two Gold over the past eight years, we again award a Gold Star Award for this outstanding accomplishment.

AU_Hobby - Lincoln Cents Complete Variety Set, Circulation Strikes and Proof (1909-Present)
This set is far more difficult than might appear at first glance. While it is “only” Lincoln Cents, it includes all varieties, and comprises an astonishing 550 different coins. Many dozens of doubled dies and repunched mintmarks require patience and lots of searching on the part of the collector attempting it. AUHobby has managed to complete almost 97% of this massive set, with a current Weighted GPA of just over MS-65. After a Blue Star in 2014, we are happy to award his second Gold Star award for 2017.

Cajun Collection - Lincoln Cents Basic Set, Proof (1936-1942)
The Proof coins of 1936 to 1942 have long been very popular, and Cajun’s collection of Lincoln Cents from that period stands near the brink of perfection with a Set Rating of 69.56. In thirty years, PCGS has graded only four individual coins that could be used to upgrade this set. The 1937-42 issues all sit at the top of the Population Report. Congratulations on this fine accomplishment.

WingedLiberty’s Color of Money “Fireball Rainbow” Lincolns (The Paul A. Hubanks Collection) - Lincoln Cents Toned Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1909-1958)
Another extraordinary set from WingedLiberty, deserving of its 2nd gold star. Coin after coin in this set delights the eye. WingedLiberty’s joy of collecting is evidenced throughout his collections (including this one) by the creative names he gives the coins, which can be found in the comments fields. Dan Cent - Shield Two Cents with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1864-1872)
Though it includes only a dozen coins, Dan Cent has assembled an extraordinary set with a rating of 67.95 and a Red percentage of 100%. About half of the coins are finest knowns (or tied for that honor) and after being awarded its first Gold Star last year, we are pleased to repeat the award.

Simpson - Shield Two Cents Basic Set, Circulation Strikes and Proof (1864-1873)
Near the threshold of perfection, Simpson’s set of Two Cent Pieces in MS and Proof is a wonder to behold. Boasting a set rating of a mind-boggling 68.28, nearly a third of the set consists of finest knowns and every coin in the set is either full red, or a cameo. This was a new set in 2015, and has easily earned its third Gold Star Award.

After receiving a Gold last year, tompet38 is back this year for another. And why not? With a set rating of 68.04 (a mere .56 points away from the theoretical maximum) and 20 of the 23 coins sitting at the top of the pop charts, this is a set unlikely to be topped anytime soon. With more than a three point lead over the second place set, it’s safe to say this is as good as it gets. The proof set is equally as impressive with a set rating of 69.25!

The Greenbrier River Collection - Shield Nickels with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes and Proof (1866-1883)

A Blue Star award winner in 2013 and a Gold Star winner in 2014, 2015 and 2016 we proudly add a fourth Gold Star this year. Containing 29 top pops and only .14 points from the current finest possible set rating, it is the best Shield Nickel set ever assembled. We are blown away by this one.

Richard Groman - Liberty Nickels Basic Set, Proof (1883-1912)
With a jaw dropping set rating of 68.78, this set truly borders on perfection. This marks his 15th year in the top spot in the category. We’re proud to award him his seventh Gold Star. Congratulations Richard for both your fine set and your longstanding support of the Registry.

The Gately Collection - Buffalo Nickels with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1913-1938)

Boasting a set rating of 66.77, the Gately Collection of Buffalo Nickels is a most impressive accomplishment, featuring the finest known 1916, 1917-D, 1927-S, 1936-D 3 1/2 Legs and 1938-D and, oh, did we mention the finest known 1918/17-D as well? More impressive, might even be the fact that 43 of the 71 coins sit at the top of the population, which for a series such as Buffalo nickels is no mean feat. This set continues to improve each year and leads the second place set by almost two and a half points. Our congratulations on a sixth Gold Star, and tenth consecutive win in the category. Needless to say, this set is 100% complete.

KDM - Capped Bust Half Dimes Die Variety Set by Logan-McCloskey, Circulation Strikes (1829-1837)
A winner for the past six years KDM’s set continues to lead the category. With no fewer than 123 different coins, this set is over 99% complete and made up of exquisitely toned and original pieces. With many of the coins in Choice AU this set has the look and feel that many aspire to. Sets such as this require a tremendous amount of patience, knowledge and searching, and we congratulate KDM on a well-earned fourth Gold Star.

Tom Bender - Capped Bust Half Dimes with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1829-1837)
Among the many amazing new sets last year was Tom Bender’s amazing set of Capped Bust Half Dimes. An incredible eight of the fourteen coins are Pop 1, finest knowns! How is that for seeking out the absolute best? Bender’s set has a Rating of 67.84 (66.74 without any bonuses) which for an early 19th century set is almost unheard of. We proudly award Tom a second consecutive Gold Star award for 2017.

Easton Collection - Capped Bust Dimes with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1809-1837)
Achieving 100% completeness with an average grade of 61.50 while only adding original beautifully toned coins is quite the accomplishment for a set dated 1809 – 1837! This set is ranked #1 and includes several finest known coins. It is the all-time finest (by a wide margin) even though the owner selects only those coins that fulfilled his criteria of originality and eye appeal. This set was a Gold Star winner for the past three years and is more than deserving of a fourth Gold. Keep up the effort.

A first time Gold Star winner last year, the Early American Set has certainly earned its award with a set rating of 65.93! Fully 40% of the coins sit atop the PCGS Population Report and many exhibit exquisite original toning. A well-earned repeat Gold Star.

Tom Bender - Liberty Seated Half Dimes with Major Varieties & 1870-S, Circulation Strikes (1837-1873)

Looking for the unique 1870-S Half Dime? You’ll find it here as this incredible set is 100% complete. And not simply complete, but sporting a set rating just shy of 67 – at 66.92. Tom has shared photographs of virtually every coin, and nearly all display beautiful, rich original toning. This set recently passed Simpson’s fantastic set as the finest ever and we proudly award it its first Gold Star award.

Stewart Blay (Varieties Incorporated) - Barber Dimes with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1892-1916)

This is a highly competitive category, and with the “retirement” of the Simpson collection to Platinum in 2014, Varieties Incorporated took the top spot in 2015. With a set rating just over 67.30, this 100% complete set takes home its third Gold Star award. Just under half of the 76 coins in this set sit atop their respective population figures, so we’re approaching perfection here.

Gerald Forsythe - Mercury Dimes FB with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1916-1945)

After having conquered Buffalo Nickels, Gerald has moved on to Mercury Dimes, and what an effort! Including varieties, the set is 100% complete and all sport Full Bands. This yields an astounding set rating of 69.66. If that’s not enough, look at it this way: Of the 80 coins in the set, 47 have a pop higher of zero! And these include the 16-D and the 21-D! A finer set would be difficult to imagine, much less put together. Another well-deserved gold award and this year and induction into the Hall of Fame.

Larry Martin - Mercury Dimes FB Complete Variety Set, Circulation Strikes (1916-1945)
Lacking only one coin from completion, this 108 piece set includes numerous tough DDO and RPM varieties which can sometimes be “cherrypicked” with a sharp eye. Larry even shares a few of his stories in his set description. After having received six previous Blue Star awards, we now feel the set is close enough to complete to warrant a Gold Star award. Congratulations Larry.

This is an incredible set made of up many pop 1, finest known coins including the very scarce 1823/2 overdate. Over half of the coins sit on top of the Pop Report. This set is a third year winner and has quickly eclipsed Eliasberg, Garrett, Norweb and other famous collections by a healthy margin.

Simpson - Liberty Seated Quarters, Proof (1858-1891)
Simpson’s sets never fail to amaze, and this Proof Set of Liberty Seated Quarters underscore that point. The Set rating is a mere 68.33(!) and of the 35 coins, just about half sit at the top of the Population charts. Simply astonishing quality that will be nearly impossible to beat. A well-deserved 3rd Gold Star Award.

Perfection - Barber Quarters Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1892-1916)

Perfection’s Barber Quarter set was completed this year with the acquisition of the 1894-S (in MS-67 we might add!) The set rating now stands at 67.56 with over half the coins at the top of the Pop chart. This set currently dominates the category by 3 1/2 points. A first time Gold Star winner in 2015, it now more than ever deserves its third Gold Award for 2017. Outstanding.

Simpson - Barber Quarters, Proof (1892-1915)
Like his Proof Seated Quarters, Simpson’s Barber Quarters simply amaze. Here now is a set with a rating of an unimaginable 69.91, with almost 2/3 of the set at the top of the Pop charts and nearly all of those, alone in their position as absolute finest knowns. Simpson generously shares his sets with superb quality photos, so take a moment to see that has been accomplished. A well-deserved third consecutive Gold Star – you won’t find better.

The Ohio Collector - Standing Liberty FH Quarters Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1916-1930)
With a set rating of 68.33 in a tough and beautifully-designed series, 97% (all but one) of the coins sport full heads and a third of the coins are top pops with none higher. Two thirds of the coins grade MS67FH or better and we offer our congratulations on a fifth Gold Star award.

Link's (The Early American Silver Complete Variety Set of Lettered and Reeded Edge Capped Half Dollars) - Capped Bust Half Dollars Complete Variety Set, Circulation Strikes (1807-1839)
With a daunting 610 coins needed for completion this set this set achieves an incredible 100% completeness with an amazing grade average of 64.44! The set includes both die states of the very rare 1817/4 including the finest known example. The commitment needed to assemble a set of this magnitude is very impressive and serves as an example of one of the most difficult challenges in U.S. Coin collections. Chuck is a true CBH nut! His passion and commitment are amazing and his willingness to share with outstanding photos is likewise commendable. This is a World Class set in every sense of the word, and a second Gold Star award almost seems inadequate to express our thanks and admiration for this incredible collecting achievement.

Wow – talk about a challenge!  A complete set of Overton Halves consisting of 615 coins simply boggles the mind – not so much for the value but for the sheer difficulty of locating all the varieties.  Link has managed to nearly get there, assembling 612 of the 615 varieties for a completion rate of an amazing 99.51%.  And for quality, they approach 61, which when you consider the rarity of some varieties is quite incredible.  And we’re not alone in our effusive praise.  Check out the comments section on the page for his set.  This one is typical:  Spectacular! I don't understand how anyone could assemble a complete die state set in such lofty grades in a single lifetime. Truly amazing.

Early Halves - Capped Bust Half Dollars with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1807-1839)
While not quite as comprehensive as a complete Overton Set, there are plenty of major varieties to be found in the Bust Half area, and Early Halves has managed to find them all. With three Blue Star awards and now a second Gold Star award, he’ll need to make more room on the trophy shelf! Our congratulations on completing a very tough and interesting set.

Perfection - Liberty Seated Half Dollars Date Set, Circulation Strikes (1839-1891)
For 53 years, the Liberty Seated design graced our nation’s Half Dollar and they are all represented here in superb condition. Perfection’s set is less than one point away from the theoretical maximum of 66.56 although another relative newcomer is not far behind. We take pride in awarding this beautiful set it’s first of hopefully many Gold Star awards.

Perfection - Barber Half Dollars Basic Set, Circulation Strikes and Proof (1892-1915)
Like his Barber Quarters, Perfections’ Barber Halves set an entirely new standard for the set, eclipsing the former champion by over two full points. This mind-blowing set has a Rating of 67.91, and was completed this year! Eleven coins are absolute finest knowns, and 18 are tied for that distinction. On behalf of PCGS, we’d like to thank Perfection for raising the bar for this popular set and we proudly offer a second Gold Star award for 2017.

Ron Bauer - Walking Liberty Half Dollars with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes and Proofs (1916-1947)
Walkers have long been among the most popular coins in U.S. numismatics, and among the most competitive sets on the Registry. Ron managed to assemble the current finest set in his first year, improved it by adding the final coin (a 1941 Proof) in the second year. We heartily congratulate Ron on his second Gold Star award, and trust this set has great things in store in the future.

Bruce Morelan - Early Dollars Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1794-1803)
Bruce’s set starts off with the incredible SP66 1794 $1, the current record holder for the most valuable U.S. coin. It continues with a total of 9 out of the 12 coins ranked as finest known (4) or tied for the finest known (5). The set boasts an incredible average grade of 65.84. Assembling and preserving such an inspiring group of these historical works of art is not only a great accomplishment but is a true service for future generations of numismatists. Bruce Morelan - Liberty Seated Dollars Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1840-1873)
Simply put, this set of Seated Liberty Silver Dollars is the finest set ever assembled in the history of American numismatics. The only known Uncirculated 1870-S Dollar resides here. Only 8 of the 44 coins are known in a grade higher than is in this set, and all but three of those, are unique examples. The effort and resources that have gone into building this set are enormous. No other set in the category comes even close. A Hall of Fame set, and now recipient of a 7th Gold Star Award. Awesome.

Perfection - Liberty Seated Dollars Basic Set, Proof (1858-1873)
Mr. Perfection states that Seated Dollars are his favorite registry set. These iconic American coins are “simply beautiful.” They are not widely collected due to their cost. Many Seated Dollars come dark. Mr. Perfection has passed over these even at higher grades in favor of toned coins where the colors are easily seen. He is trying to replace the lone DCAM in this set due to his belief that top Seated Dollars should be original and toned. Check out the many photos he has generously shared. With a current Set Rating of 66.26, this will be his fourth consecutive Gold Star Award.

Simpson - Trade Dollars, Proof (1873-1885)
Just as tradedollarnut’s Mint State set almost defies improvement, Simpson’s set of Proofs does the same. For one thing, it’s complete, including both the 1884 and 1885! The set rating of 66.65 is limited only by the existing coins. A fourth year for the Gold Award, we have confidence that as the few coins that could improve this set come on the market, they will soon be included here.

IPS - Morgan Dollars with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1878-1921)
With the retirement of California 1 to Platinum in 2014, the IPS Morgan Dollar set stepped up from Blue to Gold. And what a set! With a rating of 65.67 it now sits atop one of the most competitive categories in the entire registry. Hats off for a well-deserved third Gold Star Award.

Just Having Fun (Have Fun With Your Coins) - Indian Head $2-1/2 Gold, Proof (1908-1915)
Proof Gold has long been referred to as the Caviar of American Numismatics, and what a serving this set is. With a rating of 68.05, it is the finest ever assembled by almost 2 points. Don’t expect much in the way of improvement anytime soon though, as every coin in this set is either the finest known, or tied for that honor! A second Gold Star Award is a slam dunk. Congrats!

Tom Bender - $3 Gold with Major Varieties and 1855-S, Proof (1854-1889)

With the acquisition of the extraordinarily rare 1855-S Proof $3, Tom’s set now appears in this new category. And what a set it is! As rare as Proof $3’s are in any grade, what about a set that is 95% complete with a weighted GPA of 66.32! Fifteen of the thirty-nine coins sit at the top of the pop charts. With pedigrees that include Garrett, Bass and Trompeter, this set was a welcome addition to the Registry in 2012 and fully deserving of its fourth Gold Star award.

Simpson - $4 Gold, Proof (1879-1880)
One Stella is pretty amazing. All four, in an average of 67.35 is, well, we’re speechless. Simpson has managed to put together the finest set of Stellas ever assembled, and for that, we can only give him another Gold Star and tip our hats for an incredible achievement.

Gerald Lott (G & J Lott Collection) - Indian Head $10 Gold Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1907-1933)

$10 Indians are a tough set, and the current reigning champion is a new set this year. G&J Lott has entered the Registry with a splash, earning a rating of 65.17 in his first year. While he still has a short way to catch some previous champions, we cannot help but think that with a start like this, more is in store. For a treat, check out the photo of his 1909-S.

A & A Saints Collection - St. Gaudens $20 Gold Date Set, Circulation Strikes (1907-1932)
This 100% complete, #1 ranked set contains some of the most beautiful St. Gaudens you will ever see. In particular, the 1909-D, 1910-D, and the 1924 are simply stunning, but with so many coins in the 66-67 range, this collection stands as an awesome achievement both in terms of completion and eye appeal. With over two dozen absolute finest knowns, and an astonishing 75 or so coins tied for that honor, we are quite simply blown away by the quality and beauty of this set. Best Modern Sets of 2017

Mitchell J. Spivack (Wondercoin) - Top 100 Modern Coins
This set has some of the best if not the best coins in the modern era. There are a number of coins in this set that many collectors have dreamed of such as the 1969-S Double Die Lincoln Cent, the No S Proof coins, the Cheerios Dollar, the Wisconsin Extra leaf quarters, the mysterious 1964 Special Mint Sets and numerous popular Doubled Die coins. This set is one of the most exciting sets, if not the most exiting set, that a collector can build in the modern era category. Although the completion factor is the same as when the set was awarded gold in 2016, the GPA has improved to 69.64, triggering another gold award. Many of the “missing” coins are unobtainable, such as the 1964-D Peace Dollar, the 1974 Aluminum Cent or the 2000-W Sacagawea Quarter in 22K gold.

High Desert - Modern Type Set, Circulation Strikes (1950-present)
This is the fourth gold in a row for the High Desert collection. The collector has obtained some very difficult coins in almost impossible grades such as a circulation strike 1956 Washington Quarter in MS68 condition. Two more unique Top Pops include a 1952-D 10C MS68FB and 1958 50C MS67+FL. In fact, only seven coins in this set can be upgraded. Impressive.

Goldminer's Collection - U.S. Gold Complete Modern Set, Circulation Strikes and Proof (1980-present)
What a great way to build a set of some very scarce Gold Medals and Commemoratives that honor special events or significant individuals. Most of the coins in Goldminer’s Collection are graded perfect MS70 condition with no room for improvement. This is the fourth gold award for this outstanding collection.

Goldminer's Collection - U.S. Silver Complete Modern Set, Circulation Strikes and Proof (1971-present)
Even though the U.S. Mint ended its use of silver for circulating coinage in 1970, that hasn’t meant an end to the issuance of silver coins. Since 1971, we show there have been 472 mint issues struck using some silver. Goldminer has managed to assemble them all, with a Set Rating of 70.88 (improved from last year). Some 98% of the coins in this set are Top Pops, and we are quite impressed that a set of this size and scope has achieved such a lofty Rating. A well-earned Gold Star Award to be sure.

Atlantic Collection - Silver, Gold & Platinum Eagles Complete Set, Circulation Strikes (1986-present)
The Atlantic Collection is not new to the Registry, but we saw the set gradually increase its GPA over the past year. And, when it achieved completion status in June it landed in the top, besting ikes777 by .03 of a percentage point at 70.77. 229 coins in the set are Top Pops.

The Hot Chick Collection - Collectors Mint Set, Circulation Strikes (1970-2000)
Hot Chick has done a great job in building a nice array of coins from Special Mint Sets. Many individuals sometimes wonder why they can’t find a 1970-D Kennedy half in circulation. That’s because they were only issued in these Special Mint Sets so finding any example in high grades is almost impossible unless you go through many sets. This set has 8 Top Pop coins with no coin in the set graded less than 66. Our kudos on a fourth consecutive Gold award.

Buddy Byers (The Buckeye Collection) - Jefferson Nickels Basic Set, Proof (1938-1964)
Buckeye remains on top for the fourth year in a row. With a weighted GPA of 69.35 and nearly 62% of the coins in the set deep cameo, this set remains very tough to beat. No other set, current or retired, comes close.

ErasmusHall - Jefferson Nickels with Major Varieties, Proof (1938-present)
Winning a “Best of the Registry” nod in 2016, ErasmusHall continued to improve his Grade Point Average over the past year. Now with a Weighted GPA of 69.69 and 87.50% of the coins in the set graded deep cameo, no other set comes close. Congratulations of your first gold award.

Almighty Dimes - Roosevelt Dimes FB with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1946-Present)

BELLE - Roosevelt Dimes Basic Set, Proof (1950-present)
While a Proof Roosevelt Dime set may not be the most difficult to set to complete, doing so with a Set Rating over 71 is a whole different ballgame. Belle has managed to gather the finest examples on the market, and every coin after 1968 is in the ultimate possible grade. A few of the pre-1968 coins still have a bit of room for upgrading, and we trust that his set will only get better in the years to come. Congratulations on your second gold award.

admiraladm - Washington Quarters Complete Variety Set, Proof (1999-present)
The admiraladm set is very impressive as every coin is PR70 Deep Cameo both in Clad and Silver, except for the 2005-S Minnesota Silver DDR-010! The owner of this set makes it look very easy to build a such a uniform set but we know how much hard work and effort has gone into this. Phillips Collection has amassed a very tough, yet, really fun set of Washington Quarters which includes numerous illusive varieties. Many of the varieties registered in the set are pop 1 coins with none being finer. Over the last year, this collector has improved his set by adding two new issues. Brian Ray (The Buckeye Collection) - Washington Quarters Basic Set, Proof (1936-Present)
There’s plenty of competition in this category, but the Buckeye Collection was still on top at the 2017 deadline. Over the past year, after winning the second gold in a row, both the Rating and the %DCAM have improved! Washington Quarters are extremely popular and in this set there are many high examples representing this fabulous series.

Golden Gate FS Franklins - Franklin Half Dollars FBL Complete Variety Set, Circulation Strikes (1948-1963)
The Franklin Half Dollar series has many varieties that make the set challenging, yet really fun to collect. Some varieties are very scarce especially in high grades. This set is 100% complete and some of the varieties are Pop 1 with none being finer. There are some serious collectors with complete sets in this category, but Golden Gate has held that number one spot for three years in a row.

LOR - Franklin Half Dollars FBL Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1948-1963)

One look at this set and you can see why it has remained on top for two years in a row. There are so many unique Top Pops in this set that it makes this set nearly unbeatable. The set has bested the HOF JFS set and two award winning retired sets, EWP and GRFN. The finest possible set rating for this set is 70.44. LOR sits at 70.42. All we can say is, “WOW!”

GDaD Ikes - Eisenhower Dollars Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1971-1978)
After the Sonoron Monsoon set retired in December, 2015, GDaD Ikes took over the number one spot, and not only that, bested the Monsoon set rating to land in the coveted #1 All-Time Finest slot. The set remains on top for the second year in a row. This beautiful collection is filled Top Pops and look that stunning 1974 MS67, the single finest graded! Nice.

Sonoran Monsoon - Susan B. Anthony Dollars with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes and Proof (1979-1981, 1999)

Although the Susan B. Anthony Dollar is a short set compared to most other U.S. coin sets, this set cannot be taken lightly. The Sonoran Monsoon Set of Susan B. Anthony Dollars contains several of the finest Susan B. Anthony Dollars from circulation. This includes the first year of issue, the 1979-P in PCGS MS68 Pop 1 with none being finer. Imagine the first year the coins were struck. The public was excited about the new coins with tens of millions of them going into circulation. The finest first year issue in existence now resides in this set. Simply amazing to say the least!

The Major Varieties in this set call for all the Position A and B in both MS and Satin Finish. And, both the 2000-P FS-901 and FS-902 are required. This set received a “Best of the Registry” award icon last year and this year achieves its first gold. It is filled with Top Pops and the 2015-D Position A MS68 is the single finest graded. JBK, Sr. - Presidential Dollars with Major Varieties, Proof (2007-2016)

Last year the JBK basic set won gold. This year the major variety set, which was first listed in March, takes the tops honors. Every coin in this complete set of Presidential Dollars grades PR70. And except for the Reverse Proofs, all are deep cameo. Absolutely perfect!

Sonoran Monsoon - Presidential Dollars Complete Set with Edge Errors, Circulation Strikes and Satin Finish (2007-2016)

This collector has taken the complete variety set of Presidential dollars to a new level. 400 coins are currently required in the set but that number changes as new varieties are discovered. Can the set ever be complete? Maybe not, but Sonoran Monsoon has come close. At 91.04% complete (better than last year), he’s missing only a few issues. Great job on a very tough set.

Subway Tokens - Baseball Hall of Fame $5 HOFer Signature Set, Circulation Strikes (2014)
In 2015, this special little set was nearly perfect. In 2016 and 2017, it’s all a MS70! And, with the Top Pop Bonuses, it rates 71.08. You simply cannot get better than that! Perfection.

Best Mint and Proof Sets of 2017

Bob McCann (Macintosh Coins 09 & up!) - 2009-Present Mint Set with Major Varieties

At a first glance a 2009 to date set does not appear to be challenging. However, once you view the set composite and realize how many coins are required to complete the set (currently 425!), you begin to appreciate all the hard work and efforts involved in building this set. Congratulations to Bob McCann for taking on such a huge challenge and having so many high-end examples representing coins from 2009 to date.

ErasmusHall - 1936-Present Mint Set
Now requiring 1,214 coins, completion of this set is a collecting accomplishment few can match. This is not to mention that the set now boasts a set rating of 67.98, a tiny uptick from last year. ErasmusHall has proven to be a dedicated collector with an eye for condition. With many coins imaged, you’ll do yourself a favor by browsing through this amazing collection. His eighth consecutive win in the category means he’s more than ready for Hall of Fame status which he obtained this year. Congratulations on a great accomplishment.

Merion Collection - 1906 Mint Set with Gold

Here is a really nice Mint Set, containing 24 coins, 11 of them gold! Most of the copper, nickel and smaller silver coins are in the 65-66 range, while most of the halves and gold average MS 63-64. Overall, a great-looking set and a proud recipient of a third Gold Star for 2017.

High Desert - 1793 Mint Set
Yes, it’s a small set with only four coins. But what four coins! The 1793 Half Cent, and the Chain, Wreath and Cap cents of 1793. All three of the Cents are finest knowns. Most collectors would consider any one of these coins, in nearly any grade, as a centerpiece of their collection. Here is a set of all four with a GPA of 66.62! A GPA over 66 for a 1793 Mint set? Yup. Check out the photograph of the 1793 Liberty Cap Cent! Talk about incredible… A most deserving third Gold Star.

Evans T. Henry (bhenry661) - 1865 Proof Set with Gold
Anytime you see the words “Proof” and “Gold” together, you know you’re in for a special set. BHenry’s 1865 Proof Set with Gold is simply amazing, with a weighted GPA of 66.85. Even though he’s still looking for the $20, we felt that what has been accomplished so far was fully deserving of his second Gold Star Award and here’s hoping that that Double Eagle shows up soon!

Monte Weiner the Sebastian Collection - 1857 Proof Set
Proof coins really made their public debut around this time, so this early set is a real treat to see. The stars of this set are the Half and Dollar, which are both Pop 1, with none higher! With a set rating of 66.47, the quality is certainly there, and we are delighted to award a third Gold Star Award for 2017.

Best Colonials, Private Issues & Territorial Gold, Pattern & Medals Sets of 2017

J & L Norse Set - Norse American Commemorative Medals (1925)
These interesting Medals have always attracted the attention of collectors, and J & L has put together the ultimate set, with both the finest-known Silver Thick, and Gold medals. What more can we add but a second Gold Star Award for this fine collecting accomplishment.

Alamo Collection - Early American Coins and Tokens Basic Design Set (1616-1820)
The Alamo Collection contains high-grade examples of virtually every Colonial type. The weighted GPA of 57.50 means that most of the coins are Mint State, which is quite an accomplishment any time Colonial coins are involved. While two coins are still required for completion, the quality of this set is quite impressive. A sixth consecutive award, and a fifth Gold for an outstanding group of tough coins.

Sixth Army Collection - Philippines Complete Classic Set, Circulation Strikes (1903-1945)
The coins of the U.S. Philippines enjoy a broad, enthusiastic collector base. The Sixth Army set is one of two complete collections in this category, but this one is slightly better with a weighted GPA of 64.68. What makes this set extra special is the large number of Top Pop coins. This is the fourth consecutive Gold Star award for this fine set.

Bill Berenia (High End Basic Set) - Philippines Complete Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1903-1945)
This is a monster set of 144 coins. This is not only the first and only complete set in its category thus far, it also has an impressive Weighted GPA of 63.07. There are plenty of tough coins in this set, but the 1906-S One Peso is a real standout. Our congratulations on a third consecutive Gold Star.

Simpson - Amazonian Patterns - Gold (1872)
Words fail us in attempting to describe the rarity, desirability, significance or anything else about this set. Simpson - Gobrecht Dollar Patterns Redbook Set (1836-1839)
The Gobrecht Dollar Patterns of the late 1830s are among the most interesting and desirable of the silver issues of the mid 19th century. All are very rare, and completing the set is an achievement in itself. Doing it with three finest known’s and a Set Rating of 65.54 is nothing short of amazing. Best Low Ball Sets of 2017

Dino's LB Liberty 5C - Liberty Nickels, Low Ball (1883-1912)
In 2014, Dino received a gold award and now three years later, he is being awarded gold again. He’s taken his GPA even lower from 1.71 to 1.62. He’s so close to a perfect 1.0 set that it was time to recognize his amazing efforts again. Great work!

Vinny Kid - Barber Quarters, Low Ball (1892-1916)
This is a solid low ball set with 45 of 74 of the coins in the set the single finest lowest grade. And since last year, the set went from 2.03 to 1.68, only to show that this collector is working it! This is a great effort and we are happy to give the set its first gold award.

Chesapeake Collection - Walking Liberty Half Dollars, Low Ball (1916-1947)
Winning gold seems to be the trend for this Low Ball set of Walkers which took top honors in 2015 and 2016. This set first appeared in March, 2014 and has steadily lowered its GPA. The collector has treated us with a digital album of some of the lowest Walkers ever graded. The set is filled with coins that are the single lowest graded. Great job!

Johnny Goldsmith (Pocket Change) - Morgan Dollar Top 100 Vam Set, Low Ball (1878-1921)
We see a trend here. For the fourth year in a row, Pocket Change has impressed us by lowering his GPA even more. His set now has an amazing 43 Top Pops which are the single lowest graded. His set far surpasses the other registered sets in this category and is the only one that is 100% complete. Great job!

Best Everyman Sets of 2017

Liberty Headdress - Everyman Indian Cents (1859-1909)
Nice! Nice! Nice! Every coin is an AU58 with a few pluses scattered throughout. The set boasts three of the single finest AU58+s graded: 1865, 1885 and 1909-S. The set rating of 58.77 pretty much says it all. Since winning gold in 2014, this collector has continued to improve his set and now boasts a total of four consecutive Gold Star Swards.

Mi¢hael Hassler, Master Sergeant, USAF, Retired Combat Air Crew Member & Vietnam Veteran - Everyman Lincoln Cents (1909-1958)
This is the fifth gold award in a row as Michael continues to dominate against 27 other collectors competing in this category. One great thing about the Everyman coins, is that they actually did what coins were meant to do… buy things! The set is filled with Top Pops including a 1918, 1921-S, 1925-S, 1926, 1930, 1931-S, 1937, and 1953-S which are the single finest AU58+s graded. It’s just about as good as you can get in the Everyman category. Congratulations!

J. Dennis Kozimer (KozMc Mercs) - Everyman Mercury Dimes (1916-1945)
Over the past year, KozMc has upgraded this set and it now consists entirely of AU58s and better and sports a rating of 58.96 which is about as high as an Everyman set can get. This set is the only complete set in the category and by far the nicest. Continuing to dominate, the set wins a Gold award for the fourth year in a row.

Tom Sears MD (Bustnut) - Everyman Capped Bust Half Dollars (1807-1839)
AU58s and AU58+s complete this wonderful set. Starting the set in early 2013, the set has remained on top ever since. Now, with four consecutive Golds, the set is very close to achieving the finest grade possible. One of the comments from last year, “How in the world did you get eight of the PCGS 58 Plus Bust Half Dollars graded? No way anyone can catch you now. Super job!”, is now incorrect. There are 17 AU58+s in the set now!

cornhusker collection GBR - Everyman Barber Half Dollars (1892-1915)
In this very competitive category, and with 10 sets complete, it is hard to stay on top. But cornhusker improved his set steadily and landed in the coveted number one spot last year, surpassing the BarberNut collection that won gold in 2013 & 2014 and the SurfCity set which won gold in 2015. He has continued to be in the No. 1 spot ranking for 2017 as well. There is good reason why this set deserves gold; nearly 80% of the coins in the set are Top Pops! A great set in a very competitive category.

CHERKAAL - Everyman Franklin Half Dollars (1948-1963)

CHERKAAL is into Franklins. This is the first time that the judges can remember awarding two sets, from the same collectors, of the same type. Yes, CHERKAAL has two perfect sets and is tied with himself as well a newcomer, Gem State (Idaho) 58s.

The Gem State (Idaho) 58's - Everyman Franklin Half Dollars (1948-1963)
Tied with the CHERKAAL sets, this is a perfect 59, the very best you can get in the Everyman category. Coming on the scene in Sept 2015 in the 11th position, Gem State quickly moved up the ranks to tie the #1 sets one month before the 2016 awards deadline. Both of CHERKAAL ‘s sets as well as this set continue their 58.98 rating this year, so a round of Golds to all. Congratulations!

Sunshine State Silver Dollars - Everyman Trade Dollars (1873-1878)
We love this set. Four of the finest graded and all but just one Top Pops! This collector won a “Best of the Registry” nod in 2015 and last year won his first gold. He has been very diligent about upgrading his set and now has a nearly perfect set so we take pleasure in award a second Gold Star award this year.

johnk1942 (3) - Everyman Morgan Dollars (1878-1921)
John still dominates in this category, besting the number one retired set, the Hoosier Collection, by nearly 2 points. And, the set continues to improve, if that’s possible. At the deadline last year, its GPA was 58.29, now it sits at 58.47. Great job at building what’s soon to be the best possible set ever.

Best African Sets of 2017

Virginia Transplant (thush) - Angola Portuguese Colony Denomination Type Set, Circulation Strikes (1921-1974)
Until 1975, Angola was once a Portuguese colony on the western coast of southern Africa. This set includes one example of every denomination issued between 1921 and 1974. The majority of the Thush Collection are either Top Pop coins or unique Top Pops.

Richard K. LeVan (EML Collection) - Congo (The Republic) Gold, Proof (1965)
This set of Congolese gold coins includes all of the low-mintage coins from 1965. Reportedly, 70% of the original mintage was melted down, leaving very few examples for collectors. It’s a tough set with very little room for improvement.

jbw - Rhodesia Republic Complete Set, Circulation Strikes (1970-1977)
Before it became Zimbabwe, Rhodesia issued a series of coins based on a dual monetary system (British Pound and decimal Dollar). Most of the coins are very common, but the quality of this set is superb and includes a bulk of Unique Top Pop coins.

SWvdM - South African George VI Denomination Type Set, Proof (1937-1952)
This is a beautifully matched 1952 Proof Set that includes every denomination in exceptional condition. The lowest grade on any coin is PR66 and nine of the eleven coins are Top Pops.

Cannonball! - Southern Rhodesia 3 Pence, Circulation Strikes (1932-1952)
Not all high-mintage coins are common in high grade – such is the case here. This is a nice set of eleven coins, virtually all of which are Unique Top Pops. Congratulations on a job well done.

Best Asian Sets of 2017

This is a complete set of the $1,000 gold coins issued by Hong Kong from 1975 to 1987. Each of the coins celebrates an animal associated with the Chinese New Year, plus two Royal Visit coins in 1975 and 1986. There are over 6.5 ounces of pure gold in this set.

孙克勤 Sun Keqin (Sun) - People's Republic of China Old Three Flowers, Proof (1991-2000)
These coins are Proof versions of the regular circulating commemoratives of this era. This set of coins was the first to achieve 100% completion.

孙克勤 Sun Keqin (Sun) - People's Republic of China Commemoratives Complete Set, Circulation Strikes (1984-Present)
Between 1991 and 2000, the People’s Republic of China issued 1 Jiao, 5 Jiao and 1 Yuan coins with lovely floral designs. Until the mid-1990s, the mintages of the Proof sets was very low – usually from 1,000 to 2,500 sets. To complete this collection, many Proof sets were broken up just to get the individual pieces, most of which are presented here as unique Top Pops.

孙克勤 Sun Keqin (Sun) - People's Republic of China Commemoratives Complete Set, Proof (1984-Present)
Specimen coins of this era ere specially marked coins made primarily for sale to collectors. They are far less common than the normal commemorative coins, but not nearly as rare as Proofs. Collecting them all is a difficult endeavor. This was the first set registered in this category, the first to achieve 100% completion, and it is replete with Top Pop coins, some unique.

孙克勤 Sun Keqin (Sun) - People's Republic of China Commemoratives Complete Set, Specimen (1985-2005)
Beginning in 1984 and continuing to the present day, the People’s Republic of China issued circulating commemorative coins to celebrate dates, events, people and places that are significant in Chinese culture. These were very popular coins with both public citizens and coin collectors. In the last year, the owner added the necessary coins to achieve 100% completion.

DMR Collection - Panda Silver 10 Yuan (1 oz) with Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1989-2015)

This extremely popular collection of silver 1 Yuan Pandas requires 91 coins. At the top of the hill stands the DMR Collection with 100% completion and a weighted GPA of 69.50. Many of the coins are MS70s and Top Pops, and we suspect that this set will only improve with time.

YY 江南两角 - China Kiangnan Province 20C, Circulation Strikes (1898-1911)
This is a nice set of classic Provincial Chinese coins. It is only one coin away from completion, but it includes one coin from each year plus varieties. It will be interesting to see what changes take place in this set over the next year.

Virginia Transplant (thush) - China Manchoukuo 5 Fen, Circulation Strikes (1933-1945)
During its occupation of China between 1933 and 1945, Japan issued a variety of coin for use in the regions under its control. The 5 Fen series includes a variety of metallic alloys such as copper-nickel and even red fiber. With one more coin, this set will be complete. In the last year, the weighted GPA of this set has risen from 60.00 to 61.10.

Anil Gupta (anilgupta) - India Colonial British Denomination Type Set (1835-1947)

India is an emerging hot market, especially for the British Colonial coins. This set is particularly tough because most of the coins are from the 1800s and they are difficult to locate in top grades. In the last year, this set has improved from a weighted GPA of 63.96 to 64.00.

RW Israel Pruta Set - Israel Pruta Complete Set, Circulation Strikes (1949-1957)

This is a great set which gives a good overview of regular issue Israeli coinage. In the last year, the owner of this set obtained the two missing coins that were necessary for 100% completion (congratulations!). Many of them are Top Pops and a couple are unique Top Pops. This is the fifth Gold award for this deserving set.

The Durdik Family Trust - Japanese Gold Denomination Type Set (1870-1932)
Japanese coins are very popular with collectors because of their scarcity and attractive (yet simple) designs. This set is complete with a Weighted GPA of 63.60.

Kaizan 海山 and Raiden 雷電 一 圓 銀貨 Collection - Japanese Mutsuhito 1 Yen, Circulation Strikes (1870-1912)
The Japanese Yen of this era is a large, impressive silver coin that circulated widely and is difficult to locate in top condition. This set is 100% complete and has a weighted GPA of 59.61. This is the fourth award for this set.

Hetman - Kazakhstan Silver 100 Tenge, Proof (1995-present)
Hetman has done an outstanding job of gathering all of the silver 100 Tenge commemorative coins issued by Kazakhstan, then keeping it up to date. Every coin in this 100% complete set is a Top Pop, and the vast majority are unique Top Pops.

Hetman - Kazakhstan Silver 500 Tenge, Proof (2000-present)
This set caught our attention because of its size, the level of completion (99.30%) and the overall quality. All of these are low mintage coins. All but a few of the coins in this set are unique Top Pops and the weighted GPA is an amazing 69.26.

Hetman - Kyrgyzstan 1 Som, Prooflike (2008-present)
All but one of the coins in this set is a Top Pop. This set contains one each of all the large, silver commemoratives issued by this former Soviet Union state.

Hetman - Kyrgyzstan Silver 10 Som, Proof (1995-present)
Kyrgyzstan is one of the several “-stan” countries that broke away from the Soviet Union. In 1995, Kyrgyzstan began issuing large 10 Som silver coins in Proof condition. In some years, one coin was issued; in others, as many as 10 different coins might have been issued. This set is 100% complete and every coin except two are a unique Top Pop.

Joao de Brito Augusto - Macau Pataca, Circulation Strikes (1952-1985)
Macau, a former Portuguese colony attached to the southern border of mainland China, began issuing coins in 1952. This collection includes all of the One Pataca coins issued by Macau from 1952 to 1985 and it includes the major varieties of 1982 and 1983.

J and D Fishman Collection - Palestine Complete Set, Circulation Strikes (1927-1946)

This set is a real collecting accomplishment. Besides being a large set and totally complete, many of the coins are Top Pops. Three of the coins are unique Top Pops (an improvement over the previous year). This is the fourth Gold award for this set.

This is a challenging set primarily because of the high value of the individual coins. Undaunted, Golden Memories has achieved 100% completion with a couple of Unique Top Pops, to boot.

Prof. Dato' Dr. Selvaraj Y. Subramaniam (skandakumera) - British Sarawak Complete Set, Circulation Strikes (1863-1941)

This is a large set consisting of 65 coins. Many of these coins are difficult to locate, especially in nice condition. There are some great coins in this set, including quite a few unique Top Pops. 100% complete, with a weighted GPA of 60.90.

Brandywine Collection - Syria Republic Complete Set, Circulation Strikes (1947-1958)
This is a great set of all the circulating coins from the time that Syria was an independent Republic, before becoming an Arab Republic. This set has the “toughies” (the gold ½ Pound and 1 Pound) and many of the coins are Top Pops. 100% complete with a weighted GPA of 65.50.

Best European Sets of 2017

Evergreen - Austrian 25 Euro Silver Commemoratives, Circulation Strikes (2003-present)
Euro coins are very popular with collectors, no matter which country issues them. This complete set, all in MS69 or better, is particularly attractive because of the interesting colorations that come out each year.

GDH (GDH 1/10 oz Gold Philharmonic 2002 - Date) - Austrian Gold Vienna Philharmonic 10 Euro, Circulation Strikes (2002-present)
A nice, complete set of these lovely gold coins honoring the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra (founded in 1842). According to the owner, the majority of the coins in this set were submitted raw and became immediate, unique Top Pops.

Caranett - Denmark 20 Gold Kroner, Circulation Strikes (1873-1917)
This is a complete set of the gold 20 Kroners issued by Denmark between 1873 and 1917. These are generally considered to be bullion coins, so most buyers did not concern themselves with quality. This owner has assembled as set with a weighted GPA of 65.47 and most of the coins are Top Pops. Well done!

Geonaute - French 10 Centimes, Circulation Strikes (1914-1946)
This is a great set of the holed 10 Centimes issued by France over a thirty-two year period encompassing two World Wars and the intervening peace. The quality of this set is simply superb (weighted GPA of 66.61) and it is 100% complete. While most of the coins are common, we can only imagine the time and effort that went into building this set.

Typetone - French 50 Centimes, Circulation Strikes (1897-1920)
The 50 Centimes is a small silver coin that received little attention from collectors when it circulated. This collection is relatively easy to assemble, but difficult to find in top condition. Once again, the owner has improved the quality of this set, raising the weighted GPA from 64.62 to 64.85.

Typetone - French Franc, Circulation Strikes (1898-1920)
This set incorporates the former Delhaye Collection into a 100% complete grouping of French 1 Francs from 1898 to 1920. Loaded with Top Pop coins, has a weighted GPA of 66.00.

Ribiere Pascal (kwayoo) - French Centime, Circulation Strikes (1962-2001)
This is a very interesting set that starts out with a bunch of common coins, then becomes progressively more rare as the mintages drop from a high of over 52 million to a low of 2,500. Some years are only available in sets. The key date 1991 is here (with medallic rotation), as is every other date. 97.50% complete; weighted GPA of 65.72.

Virginia Transplant (thush) - French Indo-China Colony Cent, Circulation Strikes (1885-1943)
This is a most impressive set that is not only large, but difficult to complete. This set is 100% complete with a weighted GPA of 63.25. This set is full of Top Pops and a fair number of unique Top Pops.

Larry Gray (1) - German States 3 Mark Type Set, Circulation Strikes (1908-1918)
Mr. Gray’s is the only 100% complete set in this category, with no one else coming anywhere close. He has been working on this set for years and continues to upgrade whenever possible. This year, the weighted GPA stands at an improved 66.09. Check out his great TrueView™ images.

Larry Gray - German States 3 Mark One From Each State, Proof (1908-1918)
A very impressive accomplishment of 100% completion with a weighted GPA of 67.90. This set is loaded with Top Pops (some unique) and and it includes an array of superb-quality Cameo and Deep Cameo Proofs.

CoinKing - 25 Pfennig Basic Set, Proof (1909-1912)

This 100% complete set includes Proof examples of every date and mintmark of the unusual 25 Pfennig denomination. The mintage figures for most of these coins remain unknown, but all are extremely rare. It would be impossible to duplicate this set in such a remarkably high condition. 100% completion with a weighted GPA of 67.17.

The Sheffield Collection XIV - 1/2 Mark Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1905-1919)

Sheffield has done a great job over the past couple of years in building this set of German Half Marks. Sheffield’s underlying date set is 100% complete, but this set includes all of the dates and mints issued by Germany from 1905 to 1919. This set is now 96.20% complete with a weighted GPA of 64.92.

Weimar commemorative coins are among the most popular of all German coins. In this case, the owner has achieved 100% completion with a stunning array of top-quality coins. It takes a concerted effort to reach the weighted GPA of 66.05 possessed by this set.

Larry Gray - German 3 Reichsmark Commemoratives Date Set, Proof (1925-1932)
Your writer commented “Wow, what a phenomenal set!” in 2009. That comment still stands, especially since some of the coins have been improved. This set offers an unassailable 100% completion with a weighted GPA of 67.00.

War-Buff - German Third Reich Type Set, Circulation Strikes (1933-1948)
This popular set of WWII German coins has several participants with complete collections, all vying for pole position. Currently War-Buff holds the top spot with a weighted GPA of 65.16. This set will be tough to beat.

Talmar12 (Blitzkrieg) - German Third Reich 2 Reichmark Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1936-1939)
This is a surprisingly difficult set to complete, especially in high grade. The owner has not only achieved 100% completion, but has done so with a weighted GPA of 64.02.

CoinKing - German Third Reich 2 Reichsmark Complete Set, Circulation Strikes (1933-1939)
This set includes all of the 2 Mark silver pieces issued by the Nazi government between 1933 and 1933. All of the Luther, Schiller and Hindenburg 2 Marks appear in this set. 100% complete with a weighted GPA of 64.18.

jhd2000 - German Planck 2 Mark Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1957-1971)

This is a big set of coins that circulated heavily. What’s impressive here is the quality of this collection because many of the early dates were not set aside by collectors, so finding them in top condition is really tough. 100% complete with an improved weighted GPA of 63.62.

jhd2000 - German 5 Mark Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1951-1974)

After World War II, Germans focused on getting their lives back together and rebuilding their country. As a result, they spent little time on coin collecting, especially on the common coins they used every day. As a result, it is very difficult to locate high-grade examples of these 5 Marks prior to 1965. This is the only 100% complete set in the category and it comes with an improved weighted GPA of 64.09.

CoinKing - German 5 Mark Commemoratives, Proof (1952-1986)
This set includes all of the 43 commemorative 5 Marks issued by Germany from 1952-1986 and it is the only 100% complete set in the category. This set was displayed at the June 2013 Long Beach show and the August 2013 ANA convention. 100% complete with a weighted GPA of 68.26 (and constantly being upgraded).

Caranett - British Edward VII Sovereign Complete Mintmark Set, Circulation Strikes (1902-1910)
A fabulous set of arguably the most ubiquitous gold coin of the 20th century. Just completing this set is quite an accomplishment (think of the intrinsic value alone of 38 coins, each containing almost a quarter of an ounce of gold). There is one other 100% complete collection within this category, but the Caranett set beats it with an improved weighted GPA of 63.51.

CB Gold Collection - British George V Sovereign Complete Mintmark Set, Circulation Strikes (1911-1932)
Wow! This set contains all of the gold Sovereigns issued during the reign of George V, not just from Great Britain, but from Canada…and Australia…and South Africa. The first thing that pops into our mind is the intrinsic value of the gold in 83 different Sovereigns. Now 97.59% complete with a weighted GPA of 63.83.

Threadgold Collection - British Elizabeth II Sovereign Date Set, Circulation Strikes (1957-present)
This is a fairly large set that requires constant attention because of the new issue that comes out each year. This set has dropped to 97.06% complete (missing the 2016 and 2017 issues), with a GPA of 65.49. Some of the coins are unique, Top Pops!

wybrit - British Victoria Farthing Date Set, Circulation Strikes (1838-1901)
This mind-blowing set contains a farthing from every one of the years in which they were issued during Queen Victoria’s lengthy reign. That’s sixty coins right there. On top of that, the weighted GPA is an impressive 65.00 (an improvement over last year’s rating). On top of that, 25% of the coins are full Red!

Paul Menzies Ltd. - British Elizabeth II Gold Five Pound Date Set, Proof (1990-present)
This collection earned a “Best New Set” award last year because of its quality and the tremendous intrinsic value (over 25 ounces of pure gold when the set is complete). These are all great, tiny mintage coins.

The London Coin Company Ltd. - British Elizabeth II 2 Pounds Silver Britannia Date Set, Circulation Strikes (1998-present)
This is a great, modern set of the silver 2 Pounds issued by Great Britain beginning in 1998. The fact that this set consists entirely of MS69 and MS70 examples is quite impressive.

The London Coin Company Ltd. - British Elizabeth II 2 Pounds Silver Britannia Date Set, Proof (1997-present)
The Britannia series of coins is very popular with collectors. This set of Proofs includes on coin from each year of issue, all in superb condition. All but three of the coins are Top Pops and many are PR70DCAMS.

Hermes - Greece 5 Lepta Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1828-1971)
A tremendous collecting accomplishment that includes copper coins from the 1800’s in Mint State. This set would be extremely difficult to replicate, let alone with a GPA of 59.76.

Hermes - Greece 10 Lepta Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1828-1973)
As with his 5 Lepta set, Hermes has accomplished an amazing feat. 100% completion with a weighted GPA of 62.86.

Eoin - Irish 6 Pence Date Set, Circulation Strikes (1928-1969)
This is the better of two sets of Irish Sixpence that Eoin has posted on the PCGS Set Registry. Both are high quality, but this one is 100% complete and the average grade is better than MS64.

Eoin - Irish Shilling Date Set, Circulation Strikes (1928-1968)
This set is a load of bull. No, really, every coin features a bull on the reverse. This set has room for improvement as far as some of the grades are concerned, but we’re impressed by the fact that it is 100% complete and that it contains the very rare 1937 Shilling.

Gene Maguire (Gene1865) - Irish 1/2 Crown Date Set with Mule, Circulation Strikes (1928-1967)

The luck of the Irish is evident in this 100% complete collection. These were the largest denomination issued by Ireland and each coin sports a horse and a harp (for those of you who are topical collectors). This year, the weighted GPA rose from 58.61 to 60.65.

Caranett - Netherlands 10 Gulden, Circulation Strikes (1875-1889))
Caranett has several award-winning sets of world gold coins. This set is also top-notch, 100% complete, and full of Top Pop coins (in fact, only one coin is not a Top Pop, and another is a unique Top Pop).

Jorge Tierno - Spain 20 Pesetas, Circulation Strikes (1887-1904)
This small set of nine gold coins contains some great, low mintage rarities and the owner has collected them all. This is the only complete set in the category and it has a weighted GPA of 60.53.

Caranett - Sweden 20 Kronor, Circulation Strikes (1873-1925)
Caranett is the king of world gold coins. This set is only two coins shy of completion and every coin is a Top Pop. The weighted GPA is an impressive 66.00, indicating the superb quality of these eighteenth and nineteenth century coins.

The Sheffield Collection XX - Swiss 1 Silver Franc, Circulation Strikes (1850-1967)
This is a large, comprehensive set of Swiss 1 Francs, each coin the size of a US Quarter Dollar and often equated with the US Barber Quarter series. The owner has done a great job of filling in most of the holes with high-grade examples. As with Sheffield’s ½ Franc set, we expect this set to get better every year. Over the last year, the set remained at 94.92% completion, but the weighted GPA rose from 65.98 to 65.76.

Anteater Collection - Swiss 20 Gold Francs Complete Set, Circulation Strikes (1883-1949)

Swiss 20 Francs are among the most attractive world gold coins, each with a female representation of Helvetia on the obverse. This 40-coin set is 100% complete (the 1887-B and 1896-B rarities are optional) and the quality is an impressive weighted GPA of 64.27.

The denominations of the coins in this set range from 200,000 to 2 Million Karbovantsivs. Sounds impressive, but the Karbovantsis was replaced by the Hyrvyni in 1996 at a rate of 100,000 to 1. The coins themselves are lovely, hard to find, and the fact that this set is 100% complete is a testament to the owner’s persistence.

This BIG set contains 680 coins and it gets bigger each year as new coins are issued (how about ten new ones in 2013 alone). Virtually every coin is a unique Top Pop!

Best North American Sets of 2017

Lantern Collection - Canadian Coins Complete Set with Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1953 to date)

Queen Elizabeth takes front-and-center with this set, as it includes all of the types of coins issued under her reign (529 coins comprise this set). Mega-collector Lantern has accomplished 94.90% completion with a weighted GPA of 65.94. Think about the time and effort that went into the building of this set, the cost, and the constant upgrading. To say we’re impressed is an understatement.

Lantern Collection - Canadian Coins Complete Set with Varieties, Proof-Likes (1949 to date)
This massive set (456 coins) is a true collector’s paradise. The only source of many of the coins in this set was the Prooflike sets issued each year by the Canadian government. Imagine how many of those sets had to be broken up to complete this set, then even more sets were dis-assembled for upgrades. The Lantern Collection is only 93.20% complete, but it is far ahead of any competitor.

Northern Lights Collection - Canadian Basic Type Set, Circulation Strikes (1858-1967)
Collectors of Canadian type coins will appreciate this extensive, high-quality set. This set has been around since 2009, but we’re benchmarking it this year at 100% completion and a weighted GPA of 66.43. It appears that this set remained static over the past year, indicating how tough it is to make any improvements in an already star-studded set.

Willamette Collection - Canadian Large Cents with Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1858-1920)
This is a complete set of Canadian Large Cents, which is tough enough, but the addition of rare varieties makes it nigh impossible. To top it off, almost 80% of the Willamette Collection is full Red. Dedication and perseverance are on full display here.

Lantern Collection - Canadian Complete Cents Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1858-2012)
Few people attempt this collection because of its sheer size (144 coins), but the owner of this set has obtained every one of the requisite coins. Not only that, the weighted GPA is an amazing 67.08.

Crowe Lake - Canadian Victoria Ten Cents with Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1858-1901)
Per the owner, this is the first complete set of Victoria Ten Cents with varieties and it took over ten years to complete [ed. note: this is the ONLY complete set in this category]. The set is replete with rarities in various grades and chock full of great “name” pedigrees.

BB-MrSatki - Canadian Silver Dollars with Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1935-1967)
The Silver Dollar coins of Canada are one of their most popular series. This set includes all major varieties and is 100% complete. We would not be surprised if improvements are made to this set over the coming year.

Gene B. Collection - Canadian Silver Commemorative Fifty Cents, Proof (1995 to date)
This is a visually impressive set of 79 coins, all of which are silver commemorative Half Dollars issued by Canada. A wide range of topics are covered here: animals, sports, events, and locations. All of the coins, except one, are PR69 or better and the vast majority of the coins are Deep Cameos.

Perth Collection - Newfoundland Complete Set, Circulation Strikes (1865-1947)

This is another of those mega-sets which, in this case, requires 139 coins to be complete, including every date in every denomination from the Cent to the $2 gold piece. This is the third Gold award for this collection, which is now #1 in the category. It is now 100% complete with a weighted GPA of 64.51.

Virginia Transplant - Cuban Complete First Republic Set with Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1915-1961)

This is an impressive, mid-sized set that reached 100% completion three years ago. This set is loaded with Top Pops, many of which are unique for their grade.

Fernando A. Baez Guerrero - Dominican Republic Complete Set, Circulation Strikes (1937-Present)
This is a great yeoman effort at attempting this oversized set that covers the complete Dominican Republic coinage in all dates and denominations from 1937 to date. Many of the coins in this set are unique Top Pops. This year, the completion level improved to 98.99%; the weighted GPA is 65.13.

Fernando A. Baez Guerrero - Dominican Republic Complete Set, Proof (1937-2003)
Loaded with unique Top Pops, this set reflects the same attention to detail that FABG lavishes on all his/her sets. There are many low mintage coins in this set, including a couple with mintages of only 35 Proofs.

Fernando A. Baez Guerrero - Haitian Silver 10 Gourdes, Proof (1967-1971)
This is a relatively short set, but it is 100% complete and has a weighted GPA of 66.44. Most of the coins are Top Pops, many of which are unique for the grade. We’re not sure of the connection, but Haiti was fascinated by American Indian leaders on their 1971 coins.

dizzlecc - Mexico City Mint Milled 8 Reales Type Set, Circulation Strikes (1732-1897)
The Mexican “Pillar” Dollar was one of the most important coins of the New World (it was legal tender in the United States until 1857). This set is comprised of the twelve types that appeared over a range of years from 1732-1897. This set is 100% complete with a weighted GPA of 55.00. Yes, there is room for improvement, but many of these coins are as scarce as hen’s teeth in any grade approaching Mint State.

RFS Industries - Mexican Ferdinand VII (Draped Bust) 8 Reales, Circulation Strikes (1811-1821)
This classic, Mexican set includes 8 Reales issued under the reign of Ferdinand VII. Amazingly, this set is 100% complete and the lowest grade is XF40 (the 1814/3 overdate, of course). What a great set.

Charles A. McVey (Charlie's Silver Pesos) - Mexican Silver Peso Date Set, Circulation Strikes (1866-1945)
As the counterpart of the U.S. Dollar, the Mexican Silver Peso of the late 1800s was (and is) a popular collectible. Charlie’s set entered the arena with forty out of the required forty-one coins and, in the last year, the set was finally completed. We’ll be curious to see if the owner continues to upgrade the set over the coming year.

J.D. Foster Collection - Mexican Silver Cap and Ray Peso Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1918-1945)
JD has done a fabulous job of assembling a top-notch collection of these standard silver Pesos. Considering that these were all made for circulation and not with any particular attention to quality, the 66.54% weighted GPA of this set is simply amazing. According to the owner, this set was built over a 45 year period.

J.D. Foster Collection (libertycoin) - Mexican Gold 50 Pesos with Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1921-1947)

These large, heavy gold coins have always made an impressive collection. Here they are in all their bright glory. 100% complete, with a weighted GPA of 65.35. Most of the later dates are Top Pops and the 1930 is a unique Top Pop. Good job.

Gabriel Bellman (Blazer Rip City Libertads!) - Mexican 1/4 Onza Silver, Proof (1992-present)
Each year, this set gets bigger as a new coin is added. That has not stopped this stalwart collector, who retains the coveted number one standing and 100% completion. Approximately half of this collection is a unique Top Pop.

Antonio Dominguez (romanose05) - 1904 Panamanian Proof Set
A fantastically rare set of only four coins, each with a mintage of a mere 12 coins. According to the owner, this is the only complete set graded by PCGS.

It is hard to believe that, in 1962, a modern Proof set with a mintage of only 25 could exist, yet here it is. This set is unimprovable. Every coin is a unique Top Pop!

Best South American Sets of 2017

Errol Rojas (ticoviejo) - Peru Nuevo Sol CN Commemoratives, Circulation Strikes (2010-present)
These coins are known as “The Wealth and Pride” of Peru, a series of circulating coins with Peru-centric designs. Though common, they are difficult to find in high grade, just as are any modern, circulating coins. Every coin in this set, with the exception of two, is a unique Top Pop!

Timbertop - Australian 1/2 Pennies Complete Set, Circulation Strikes (1911-1964)

This is the fourth gold award for this deserving set. It is a large set (60 coins), 100% complete, full of condition-rarities, and loaded with mint red. Plus, it has the super-rare 1923 in AU58. An awe-inspiring collection.

Timbertop - Australian Pennies Complete Set with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1911-1964)

Anyone who even attempts this set has our respect. This is one of the toughest world sets to complete because of the many rarities. Timbertop has improved to 100% completion this year and the weighted GPA rose from 60.55 to 62.74. What a fabulous accomplishment.

Timbertop - Australian Shilling Complete Set, Circulation Strikes (1910-1963)

This is another tremendous Timbertop effort. The early dates in the Shilling series are tough, tough, tough in high grade, yet here they all are in wonderful Mint State condition. The number of unique Top Pops in this set is dizzying. 100% completion with a weighted GPA of 65.40 and the undisputed champion of the category.

Timbertop - Australian Florin Complete Set with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1910-1963)

In true Timbertop fashion, this set boasts a 100% completion rate, which is rather impressive for a 56-coin set. The quality is superb, too, with the average grade in excess of MS65. There is some close competition in terms of completion, but no one comes close in terms of quality.

CB Gold Collection - Australian Complete Sovereign Set with Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1855-1931)
Who attempts a set of 192 gold coins, each containing nearly a quarter of an ounce of gold? When we wrote the generic description for the set several years ago, we noted that no one had achieved a 90% completion level. Now the CB Gold Collection boasts a 94.27% completion level with a weighted GPA of 61.89. The “upgrade” icon indicates to us that this is a work-in-progress and we look forward to next year’s stats.

This is a great, mid-sized, modern set of Australian $1 coins. 100% complete, with a weighted GPA of 67.72. It contains numerous Top Pop coins, including several unique Top Pops.

emu666 - Australian Twenty Cent Commemoratives, Circulation Strikes (1995-Present)
This is the fifth annual and the second gold award for this modern set of circulating 20 Cent commemoratives. The owner was able to fend off a close competitor from last year. Let’s see what the next year brings.

RidgeLine Coins - Australian Kookaburra Silver Dollars, Circulation Strikes (1992-present)
The Kookaburra is a one-ounce silver coin created for sale to collectors. Each coin has a different view of the iconic Australian bird. This set is comprised of the Proof versions of this coin. There are several sets in this category that are 100% complete, but this owner holds a slight advantage. Keep up the good work!

Cannonball! - Fiji Pennies, Circulation Strikes (1934-1968)
Of the three collectors who have registered this set, Cannonball has the best. 25 coins, 100% complete, and a weighted GPA of 65.80. Lots of Top Pops and “unique for the grade” coins here.

George G. Fenton (kiwiusa) - New Zealand Shilling Complete Set, Circulation Strikes (1933-1965)
This set is a little bit tougher to find in top condition, but there are loads of Top Pops here, as well, and several are unique Top Pops. This is the third gold award for the category. It is 100% complete and the weighted GPA is 64.95.

James Heegeman (kiwiwally) - New Zealand Threepence Complete Set, Circulation Strikes (1933-1965)
This 100% complete set has been a long-time in the making (see the owner’s notes about where each coin was acquired). There are some very special coins in this set, including several unique Top Pops.

George G. Fenton (kiwiusa) - New Zealand Sixpence Complete Set, Circulation Strikes (1933-1965)
Though not 100% complete, this set deserves an award because of the high quality (weighted GPA of 65.13).

jhd2000 - Palau Dollar Marine Life Protection (1992-present)
Palau is one of the best diving sites in the world, so it is natural that they would produce coins featuring sea life. All of these coins are colorized, so they are stunning in appearance. Of the 50 coins in this complete set, many are unique Top Pops.

Energize - Tuvalu Star Trek Silver Dollar Series, Proof (2015)
Lovers of the classic Star Trek TV series and all its related spin-offs will appreciate this collection of silver Dollars from Tuvalu. 100% complete, with an improved weighted GPA of an amazing 69.46.

Best Multi-Country Sets of 2017

CB Gold Collection - British Commonwealth Sovereigns Complete Set Victoria (Jubilee Head), Circulation Strikes (1887-1893)
The Jubilee Head is a specific design type seen late in Queen Victoria’s reign. The Jubilee head appears on British and Australian gold Sovereigns from 1887 to 1893. This 20-coin set was just completed in the past year and now has a weighted GPA of 63.24.

Brandywine Collection - Coin of the Year by Krause Publications (1982-present)
This is a fun set of highly-regarded coins, each of them recognized as the Coin of The Year by Krause Publications. Though not complete (90.94%), this set is so far ahead of the competition that it deserves special recognition. The owner has done a tremendous job in displaying this set on the Registry – it’s worth a look!

Best New Sets of 2017

D. L. Hansen - First Year of Issue Type Set (1793-present)
This tough set makes its debut with a completion rate of 97.28%, an astonishing 25 percentage points higher than the second place set. Complete in nickel and silver, it lacks only one copper coin and three tough early gold coins, which we have a hunch will shortly be added. The weighted GPA is just a hair under 60, and by the time it is finished, we likewise believe that number will be quite a bit higher as well.

D. L. Hansen - 19th Century Type Set With Gold (1800-1899)
To top off the Best New Sets for 2017 is this amazing accomplishment of Mr. Hansen’s – a complete 19th century type set (with gold of course) boasting a set rating of 66.10! Naturally, it is 100% complete and even features numerous “finest for type” entries. One of our favorite coins from this set is the 1839/8 Type of 1838 $10 in MS66. What a coin!

D. L. Hansen - U.S. Coins Complete Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1792-1964)
How about a challenge to Mr. Eliasberg? D.L. Hansen with his opening salvo has achieved a completion rate of 92.98% for a Complete U.S. Coin set! And to top it off, it has a current GPA of 62.27. Simply amazing. We are anxiously watching the progress of this incredible set, and would not be surprised to see his set rating surpass Mr. Eliasberg’s even if he is unable to secure such unique rarities such as the 1822 Half Eagle or the 1870-S Half Dime and $3. Even so, his set rating now tops the No. 2 current set by forty points.

D. L. Hansen - U.S. Gold Complete Date Set, Circulation Strikes (1795-1933)
This nearly 500-piece set of all U.S. gold coins makes its initial appearance in the Registry at just under 95% complete, and is hot on the heels of both the legendary Bass and Eliasberg collections. In fact, for the coins included, it already eclipses them for the GPA rating. We are simply blown away by Mr. Hansen’s new sets.

WingedLiberty’s Color of Money “Fireball Rainbow” Lincolns (The Paul A. Hubanks Collection) - Lincoln Cents Toned Basic Set, Mirror Proof (1936-present)
One need only peruse the Album on this Set’s webpage to get a sense for WingedLiberty’s eye, aesthetic sense, and motivation. This complete collection of mirror proof Lincoln cents is a truly remarkable achievement, showcasing high grade and beautifully toned specimens of each date.

1TwoBits - Early Quarters Die Variety Set by A.W. Browning, Circulation Strikes (1796-1838)
Compared to early Bust Halves, Bust Quarters are all very scarce. Few were minted to begin with and most saw heavy circulation before being melted. Even a simple date set would be a challenge, but a complete Browning set is tall order at best. TwoBits has achieved a 92.55% completion rate and almost 40% of the coins are the finest known for their variety. A very welcome new set for 2017.

D. L. Hansen - Barber Half Dollars with Major Varieties, Circulation Strikes and Proof (1892-1915)
How better to mark your debut year than by posting the finest all time set in an important category? Well, D. L. Hansen’s Barber Half Set with Circulation Strikes and Proofs did just that. And not just by a bit, but by over two and a half points! The best part is, there is still plenty of room for improvement and we feel certain Mr. Hansen will do just that in the months to come.

Blue Ocean - Franklin Half Dollars with Major Varieties, Proof (1950-1963)
Blue Ocean has done a great job of nipping at the heels of the EBL III Collection, a PCGS Set Registry Hall of Fame, platinum level set. The set burst on the scene last August and since then achieved the #2 rank this June. Six of the coins are Top Pops and 81.25% are deep cameo. A great effort!

D. L. Hansen - Morgan Dollars Basic Set, Circulation Strikes and Proof (1878-1921)
In his first listing year, D.L. Hansen’s Morgan Dollar set is 100% complete and boasts a set rating of 65.62 beating the previous champion – a five-time blue star winner.

Mitchell J. Spivack (Wondercoin) (Justin's "Homemade" Ike Dollars With Major Varieties Collection) - Eisenhower Dollars with Major Varieties, Proof (1971-1978)
Mitch Spivack is not new to the Registry so it is no surprise to see him compete with high quality coins, In fact, this is an absolutely PERFECT set with every single coin the very finest you can find. That means 100% Top Pops and 100% deep cameo,including the elusive 1971-S Silver Type 1 Reverse. Just beautiful!

D. L. Hansen - $3 Gold Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1854-1889)
With 13 coins already at the top of the population by date, and 12 more tied for finest known, Mr. Hansen’s Three Dollar Gold Set represents an amazing achievement in a relatively short period of time. The set is 97.56% complete missing only the unique 1870-S. The populations higher than remaining 14 coins show that this remarkable set could still be improved. Congratulations to Mr. Hansen for this superb collection.

Monte Weiner (The MW12 Collection) - 1865 Mint Set with Gold
Any mid-19th century Mint Set can be a bit challenging, but when you include the gold, it becomes a lot challenging. MW12 has assembled a complete 1865 set with gold and achieved a set rating of nearly 61 – no mean feat when you consider that the Quarter Eagles, Half Eagles and Eagles are almost unknown in Mint State! Our congratulations on a great set.

The Big Stone Collection - 1936-1942 Proof Set
The early modern Proof sets of 1936-1942 are notable for their inclusion of Buffalo Nickels (1936-37), Mercury Dimes and Walkers. While none of the coins individually are extremely rare, assembling the complete 38-piece set with a set rating of 68.29 takes patience (and some money!). Competition in this category is tough as well, with some exceptionally high-grade sets on the All-Time Finest list. But the Big Stone Collection, in its inaugural year, beats them all.

Loon Lake Collection - Everyman Indian Head $2-1/2 Gold (1908-1929)
As we all know, the “Everyman” sets are limited to circulated coins, so when we see a set rating of 58.57, we know they don’t get much better. Loon Lake’s Indian Quarter Eagles are a virtually matched set of lovely AU58s, with the key 1911-D in 58+. That’s the way to do it!

Cardinal Collection - Libertas Americana Medals
This set of beautiful medals consists of 20 pieces and the gorgeous composite photo posted on its description page is a must see for all! Cardinal’s set is 100% complete and with a rating of 67.01 is likely to remain the finest for a very long time to come. We are more than pleased to award a Gold Star to this unique and incredibly interesting set.

The Canadian Beaver Hunter Collection - Canadian Nickel Five Cents with Varieties, Circulation Strikes (1922 to date)
This set includes all of the Nickel Five-Cent pieces issued by Canada from 1922 to date, including all of the major varieties. This set is loaded with Top Pop coins, many of which are Unique Top Pops. We’re always impressed when a new entrant into a category jumps to the number one position, especially a set that requires 120 coins.

BCM Collection - Australian Fifty Cents Commemoratives, Circulation Strikes (1966-Present)
The BCM Collection leapfrogged to the top of this category, beating out two Gold award-winning sets that were vying for top position. When 113 coins are required, this is quite an accomplishment. However, the winning margin is very slim and we expect fireworks as the participants fight it out for the top spot.

Best Digital Album of 2017

Alain Dupecher (AD4400) - Buffalo Nickels Basic Set, Circulation Strikes (1913-1938)
For the past few years, we have given our members a chance to vote on the best digital album. This year was no contest. Taking 38% of the votes from a field of ten nominations, the AD4400 set won the vote. And, there’s good reason. His album opens with a nice set description and then moving through the album the viewer sees a group of gorgeous lightly toned Buffalos. The photography is beautiful and the images are sharp. Nicely done!
