1922 Peace Silver Dollar PCGS AU55 VAM 1F Field Break Top 50. Purchased 11/15/2023 at eBay for Connor for $103.13 total ($99 bid + $4.13 shipping) in 3-bid auction. This rare die variety on the 1922 Peace Dollar is one of the most popular ('Top 50") and well-recognized among VAM die variety collectors. There is a giant die crack on the reverse, above the word "Dollar", which crosses several rays in the background. This "late die state" (LDS) is readily visible to the naked eye and most desirable. At time of purchase, the PCGS retail price was $225 in AU55, so this was a bargain for just $103.13. Connor's conservative maximum bid was $115 total. At time of purchase, the PCGS census recorded only 163 total known examples graded at PCGS, of which only 60 were higher graded than this AU55 coin. The coin has some small black tarnish spots, and has a "hazy" luster.

1922-D VAM 3 PCGS MS62 Peace Dollar, "Top 50" VAM die variety "Doubled Leaves" on reverse. Very scarce in this condition. At time of purchase, only 18 coins graded higher in PGGS census. Purchased 6/16/2022 at eBay auction (7 bidders) for $271 + $2.45 shipping = $273.45 total for Connor. The next highest 3 bids clustered in $251-$266 range. This VAM’s title is self-explanatory as it has doubling on the leaves (on the reverse below the eagle), but also has doubling on the downward feathers near the eagle’s talons. This VAM is truly difficult to spot in the wild (even with the coin in-hand). Therefore, it is expected that only 49 total examples (6 of which in MS 62) were registered by PCGS at time of purchase. As there is an imbalance in supply/demand, PCGS values MS 62 at $300.

1922-S Peace Dollar PCGS MS63 VAM-10. This is rare "Elite 30" die variety with "Extra Ray" in mountain on reverse and Die File Lines. Very low population for this variety at PCGS. Bargained down from initial asking price of $329.93 to $250 at eBay 8/30/2020, by citing comparable MS63 VAM-10 for sale at eBay for $240 retail. For reference, this precise coin was previously sold for $192 at Heritage Auction on January 15, 2020. The base coin (1922-S MS63) is worth about $75-100, so most of the value is for the rare VAM die variety.

1923 PCGS MS64 VAM-1A "Whisker Jaw" Silver Peace Dollar, VAM 1A Variety, ex-California collection. Seller was asking $293.95 at eBay (unrealistically above $210 PCGS retail price). He was temporarily offering it for sale for $220.46 (25% off), but accepted $205 by "make-an-offer". Superior quality example of this die variety (look at horizontal bar under Liberty's chin), worthy of full-retail price in my opinion

1923 Peace Dollar PCGS MS63 VAM-1B Extra Hair, "Top-50" VAM die variety. The die error (die crack) caused an extra blob of "hair" on the back top of Liberty's neck to be present. Because it's so easy to spot in circulation, this is not a rare variety (total population of 181 as of 6/13/2021). Connor noted they typically sell between $95-120, but in the past sold for more. Seller noted "some toning and milky hazing" (resembling "snot" in front of Liberty's nose). However, Connor noted the "snot" doesn't look as prominent on other photos taken of the same coin in the past when it was sold at Heritage Aug 14, 2011 (for $253) and June 26, 2019 (for $174). Dealer was originally asking $105 + $2.99 shipping at eBay as a “buy-it-now,” but accepted our private offer for $98 total ($95 +$3 shipping). At the time of purchase, PCGS values this coin at $135.

1923 VAM-1D PCGS MS63 Peace Silver Dollar Whisker Cheek, in high grade. Purchased 7/26/2023 at eBay for $195, negotiated down from initial asking price of $224.95. Seller described it as "Caked with Luster! So so Frosty!". Connor felt the $225 price was fair, but he already had 2 lower grade examples of this same variety, so we had the luxury of negotiating for a better price. We initially asked $180, and the seller counter-offered $199, and we ended up negotiating somewhere in the middle at $195. At time of purchase, there was a PCGS population of only 29 higher graded examples

Purchased for $158.00 total at Daniel F Kelleher Auctions 8/7/2023. This was lot 54 in Sale 2005. Although the PCGS retail value for the VAM was $300, the greysheet value for a non-VAM was only $95, and Kelleher's presale estimate was only $60-80 (prior to 20% commission), which was unrealistic since Connor noted these typically sell between $155-220 for the VAM. Connor was prepared to bid up to $180 value for it, but won it for a hammer price of $130. After adding 20% commission, and 1.5% for shipping, the total paid for this coin was $158.00.

1923 VAM 3 PCGS MS63 peace dollar. This was purchased as part of a group of 6 different 1923 peace dollar VAM varieties, all but one of them being Top-50's, at eBay auction 11/22/2021 (9-bid auction for total $632 + $5 shipping). Connor had allocated $130 portion to this coin, which was one of 2 coins in the group of 6 which he needed for his Top-50 VAM set. Connor was willing to pay full retail ($130) for this at the time. However, final total sale price of the group of 6 was $24 less than Connor's top bid. Applied $6 discount to this coin, so $130 - 6 = $124 for this coin

Intentionally mounted backwards in PCGS holder, to emphasize the die variety on the reverse. Connor requested to buy-it-now, since it was a new VAM we didn't have yet, and he had waited 3-years for a reasonably priced example to show up on the market. This price was deemed only $10 premium for the VAM, compared to the current market value of a regular 1926 MS63. At the time of purchase, Connor noted there were only 109 examples graded higher at PCGS.

1926-S Peace Dollar PCGS MS64 VAM 4 Dot Top 50 die Variety. Paid $285 buy-it-now eBay 12/30/2020 from seller eaglenestore (Sue Mellinger, Clarkston, WA) for Connor. At time of purchase, the PCGS retail value was $300, but prior Heritage auctions went for $329 (in 08/2016), and $376 (in 01/2016) so this was the lowest price on record for MS64, of which there was a low population of just 16 (with only 7 examples graded higher). The real-market value for just a normal 1926-S Peace Dollar without the VAM die variety was $250, so we only paid a small premium ($35 extra) for the VAM feature.

1926-S $1 Peace PCGS MS63 VAM 5 Doubled Reverse "Top 50" VAM die variety. This is a rare very low-population VAM (only 17 of this grade or higher in PCGS census at time of purchase). Purchased for $370 cash at Baltimore coin show 11/15/2024 from dealer Brian Raines (American Legacy Nimismatics) who had discovered this coin and paid to have it slabbed at PCGS. He initially offered it for $350, but then had 2nd thoughts honoring that price, realizing he had probably priced it too low. When I went to pay, he insisted on adding $20 "tax" despite me paying in cash, and him not giving me a receipt. I texted Connor from the show asking him if he still wanted it at $370, and he said yes since it's so rare "it could be 4 years before we see another". At time of purchase, PCGS retail was $425, and only 4 prior comparable sales listed at Heritage ($336, $411, $470, $540).

1927-S Peace Dollar PCGS MS63, VAM 3 Doubled Leaves. This is a popular "Top 50" die variety among the VAM die varieties, and the only VAM die variety on 1927-S. On the obverse, there is a vertical die gouge along the back of Liberty's neck. On the reverse, there is slight doubling of some of the leaves at the eagle's feet (look at the leaves closest to the letter "O" of DOLLAR), hence the name "Doubled Leaves". At time of purchase, the total PCGS population for this VAM die variety was only about 50, in all grades combined. The 1927-S year is a semi-key date, and is worth about $450+ even without the VAM die variety. This particular coin (PCGS #14173352) had previously sold for $588 at Heritage auctions on July 7, 2016. We later purchased the coin at eBay 10/6/2020 for $525 from NY dealer AVC-Numismatics. Seller first reduced price by 10% from $650 to $585, and then dropped it again by another 10% to $525 in a time-limited offer. He refused to go lower than $525. So paid $525, but received $5.25 in eBay bucks, so net price $519.75

1934 Peace Dollar PCGS MS64 VAM-1A Obv Die Scratch. "Elite 30" rare die variety with scratch on obverse. Very rare die variety, with only 2 known examples graded higher at PCGS. This is a semi-key date Peace dollar normally worth about $250-300 in MS64, but this one has a rare die variety exhibiting a long die crack on the obverse referred to as VAM-1A, and among the "Elite 30" most desirable VAM die varieties on Peace dollars. Bargained down from $365 to $350 at eBay 8/24/2020 (made private offer), plus received 5% rebate ($17.50) in "eBay bucks", so net price $332.50. So only paid about $50 extra for the "Elite 30" VAM die variety feature . Purchased from eBay seller "eagleneststore" (Mr. Mellinger, of Clarkston WA) who was breaking up and selling his personal collection of VAM die varieties. He actually sent us a nicer one than the one originally shown in the photo at eBay (he sent us PCGS #90041206 instead of 34757593). Purchased for Connor's specialized Peace Dollar collection, traded to upgrade his prior MS64 1934 Peace Dollar example.

1934-D Peace Silver Dollar PCGS MS63 VAM 3 DD Obv Med D Top 50, a scarce die variety. Purchased $296.20 eBay 10/11/2023 in 23-bid auction ($281.20 high-bid + $15 shipping) for Connor. This was around the 5th time we had tried to finally win an example at a fair price. Success! At time of purchase, the total PCGS population was 258 known examples, with 51 in MS63 like this example. For comparison, non-VAM examples of 1934-D MS63 retail $425, and typically sell for around $315-330. So there was essentially no extra premium paid for the VAM die variety feature. Our max bid was as high as $341.11 this time, after having lost out on a similar example at prior Heritage auction for $376 in 03/2023.

Interestingly, the same precise coin (same PCGS serial number) had recently sold for $275 + $6.99 shipping at eBay 7/19/2021, so the seller took a loss of over $75 reselling it for $202.50. At time of purchase, the PCGS price guide value was $350 in XF45 based on old sales at Heritage, although the price has ranged as low as $202 in June 2014, so we got this one at close to it's historic low-price range. A total population of 112 examples, 14 of which in XF 45 at time of purchase. This VAM double die ("DD") variety has doubling of the spikes on lady Liberty's tiara, as well as doubling on the nose and forehead. This variety gets its name due to the "Small D" mint mark on the reverse. In contrast, there is another more common version with a "Medium D" (VAM 3 Double Die Obverse Medium D).
